5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, September 23, 2018 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wisdom 2:12, 17-20; James 3:16 4:3; Mark 9:30-37 From our Pastor s Pen... Focusing on the Sacraments: The Sacrament of Baptism The sacraments celebrated by the Church are signs of grace that make a deeper reality present to us. One reality we encounter through the sacraments is Christ s presence in the Church community, his Body. This recognition of Christ s presence in the community should lead to a stronger awareness of being sent on a mission to engage in love-inspired action in the world. The sacrament of Baptism is the rite of initiation into the Christian community of the Church. In Baptism, the one spirit makes us members of the Body of Christ and of one another. The disciples are examples for us in so many ways, but today their example might not be what we expect. Here not only do they misunderstand Jesus (again) but they are afraid to ask him any questions. They are arguing amongst themselves. So Jesus turns the table and questions them. He wants them to tell him what they were arguing about. This almost sounds like a family squabble among the children where the parent has to step in and put a foot down. Perhaps like petulant children called on the carpet, the disciples remain silent. They do not have any answer for Jesus. Is this the way the disciples really acted? Are these the saints we revere? Are their actions worthy of emulation? The disciples serve as an example for us in that despite their misunderstanding, their arguments, even their petty jealousies about who would be the greatest, they continued to follow Jesus. Jesus does not expect perfection. The disciples clearly show that! Jesus accepts people for who they are and where they are. He asks that they follow him. Jesus then teaches the Twelve about leadership and being counted as the first. The leader is to be the servant. This upends ancient ideas and certainly modern thinking about being number one. Power, riches, and authority, both in antiquity and now, are often used to amass more. But for the Christian it is to be different. For those who desire to be first, the greatest, the best, they are to be the last, the least, the servant of all. Jesus places a child, one who has virtually no power or authority, in their midst. A child cannot return in like manner the kindness shown to it. The relationship with a child is one where we provide for and care for the child without expectation of return. What parent says to a child, You ll need to pay me back for everything I spent on you while you were growing up in our home? We pour out hearts (and our wallets) out for our children. Christian discipleship is likened to that relationship. Rather than doing political favors for those who can (and to) repay in kind, we are invited to accept the child and all the self-giving on our part that entails. This, rather than clawing one s way to the top, is the true marker of Christian love and service. From Living Liturgy During the rite of Baptism, we reject sin, renouncing those beliefs, values and choices that are opposed to Christ. At Baptism, we embrace a unique vision and set of values: those of the community of the Church, whose values prioritize love of God, self, others, and all of creation. In Baptism, we receive a vocation to holiness and participation in the Communion of Saints which requires a commitment to communion with Christ and a life of charity in this world and the next. The rite of Baptism itself is a beautiful expression of faith and communicates to the faithful various aspects of the way that we, as God s people, interact with Him in the sacraments. The three fold pouring of the water over the recipient s head and the necessary formula of baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit signifies the death of sin and entry into the newness of life through Christ s Death and Resurrection. The oil signifies anointing by the Holy Spirit and receiving of the Holy Spirit s gifts. The Holy Spirit helps us to imitate Jesus self-sacrificial love and allows us to share in the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. After being baptized, the white garment received signifies that we have put on Christ, that we have risen with Him. A lighted candle symbolizes that we are a new creation, enlightened by Christ. We are now called to carry that light into the dark world to extend the light to others. The gifts given at baptism, Pope Benedict XVI writes, are for the building up of Christ s Body and for ever greater witness to the Gospel in the world. God Bless You From Sacraments & Social Mission, USCCB, Washington. DC The community of Saint Andrew the Apostle welcomes this newly baptized child of God, Camille Bess Bizzarri, into our Catholic family. May she continue to grow in God s love and grace.

6 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Daily Readings & Reflections Monday, September 24, 2018 Proverbs 3:27-34; Luke 8:16-18 It helps to think of the Bible as a library, a collection of different kinds of books written at different times by diverse authors for a variety of purposes over thousands of years. Like any library, it is divided into sections, and one of those areas is known as Wisdom literature, which deals specifically with wise actions in contrast to foolish ones: the Books of Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon. One of the messages biblical wisdom offers is the importance of friendship with God, and to be friends with God is reflected in how you are friends with others: not refusing to do good when you have the chance, not creating needless conflict, not being envious. Be this kind of a friend, and God will friend you back. Tuesday, September 25, 2018 Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13; Luke 8:19-21 While many English translations make it sound as if Jesus had brothers, confusion arises because Hebrew and Aramaic, the written and spoken languages of the day, lacked distinct words for brothers, cousins, and other close kin. When Christian scripture was written in Greek, the word adelphos brothers was used to represent all of those relations. So it remains unclear what kind of extended family Jesus might have had. What is clear is that Jesus saw blood relations as secondary to spirit relations. Those who follow Jesus are family to him. Claim your place in that gathering. Wednesday, September 26, 2018 Memorial of Saints Cosmas & Damian, Martyrs Proverbs 30:5-9; Luke 9:1-6 Many folks have heard of Doctors Without Borders, who selflessly bring medical care around the world in response to humanitarian emergencies and where it s most needed. But the idea of doctors who don t charge fees goes back to the second century, when, according to legend, Cosmas and Damian, twin brothers from Arabia, combined their medical practice with their new Christian faith to become the silverless ones, practicing medicine without charge. Some parishes today recognize the need for affordable, accessible health care and sponsor parish nurses to assist with basic screenings and visitations. How does your parish attend to the needs of its most vulnerable members? Thursday, September 27, 2018 Memorial of Saint Vincent de Paul, Priest Ecclesiastes 1:2-11; Luke 9:7-9 In his first inaugural address, President Abraham Lincoln hoped the nation would be touched... by the better angels of our nature. His imagery says a lot about life: We can take either the high road or the low. We can be selfish and angry, or generous and kind. Saint Vincent de Paul ( ) knew both sides. He admitted he had a caustic temper and had to mind his black and boiling moods. He also wrote: We should remember that Christ himself said that by gentleness we inherit the earth. If we act on this, we will win people over so that they will turn to the Lord. That will not happen if we treat people harshly or sharply. By which angels do we choose to live, the better or the worse? Friday, September 28, 2018 Saint Lorenzo Ruiz & Companions, Martyrs Ecclesiastes 3:1-11; Luke 9:18-22 Lorenzo Ruiz (c ) was born in Manila. Married, with two sons and a daughter, he became a companion to Dominican missionaries who sailed for Japan despite intense persecution of Japanese Christians. In Nagasaki, facing torture, Lorenzo at first asked if, by giving up his faith, his life would be spared. He received no answer but felt his faith strengthen to the point that he finally said, I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly accept death for the Lord; if I have a thousand lives, all of them I will offer to him. In 1987 Pope John Paul II canonized 16 Asian and European men and women who spread the faith in the Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first canonized Filipino martyr. What does your faith inspire you to offer the world? Saturday, September 29, 2018 Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, & Raphael, Archangels Daniel 7:9-10, or Revelation 12:7-12a; John 1:47-51 Today we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels. Michael, the chief archangel, is known as a defender of God s people. Michael in Hebrew means who is like God? Gabriel is inseparable from the event of the Annunciation when Mary said yes to be the Mother of God. Gabriel s name in Hebrew refers to the strength or power of God. Raphael, God heals, appears in the Book of Tobit as a protective, healing presence to both Tobias and his father, Tobit. Honor the archangels this day by looking for ways to incarnate the message that each of them represents. How can you be a source of safety for those in distress? In what ways can you spread the word that through God all things are possible? The Knights of Columbus Benefit Golf Tournament The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit Waynesboro Community & Human Services on Friday, October 19 at the Waynesboro Country Club. 12 noon shotgun start $80.00 per person includes cart & prizes Foursomes still available!
