Statues in the Church In viewing some of the pictures of the Sanctuary of the Church from years past, statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Thérèse held a prominent place in addition to Our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. I am not sure of the reason why they were removed over the years, however, we know as Catholics that they help us to recall what we are meant to be, namely Saints in glory. With this insight in mind, I would like to return to this timeless teaching of the Church, and once again have some statues present in the Sanctuary and other locations. If anyone feels moved to offer donations for the purpose of helping in this effort, please kindly place an offering in an envelope marked Statues, and place in the collection basket any Sunday. Thank you. COME HOME TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH! Have you been away from the Church for a while? Have you ever thought about returning? No matter how long you have been away and no matter the reason, we invite you to consider renewing your relationship with the Catholic Church. Please join us for a six-week series that begins Tuesday, April 10, from 7-8:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Parish Hall on DePaul Street in Emmitsburg. For more information, contact Mary Myers (301) or myersmary@ymail.com. You may also contact the Rectory at (301) or stjosephemmitsburg@comcast.net. Jesus had just been killed by the state, an imperial occupying power. Most of the disciples had scattered. Now when Mary of Magdala comes to pay her final respects, she find the tomb empty. It might be hard for us to imagine, but apparently the early disciples did not understand that Jesus was to rise from the dead. Tough they had been with Jesus during his earthly ministry, they were unprepared for this victorious act of God over death itself. To us, the resurrection of Jesus is a central point of faith. For them, it seems to have been wholly unexpected. The gospels are remarkably candid about this embarrassing fact. But are we ready for God to conquer death in our lives? Or is this something wholly unexpected as well? Each of us has experienced loss, and sometimes it can be comforting to hold on to this loss. We want to visit the tomb. We remember the way things were. We see the burial garments are left in the tomb, as a symbol of a past that is no longer present. The disciples will never experience Jesus in the same way. His earthly ministry is over. Something new is in store and it is something wholly unexpected. With respect to our own personal losses, those moments will never be the same. God will bring something new, wholly unexpected from those crises. In this as in the other gospel accounts, the first indications of Jesus resurrection were the discovery of the empty tomb. The appearances of the risen Jesus came later. Initially the women discovered the tomb empty, pondered its meaning, and reported to the remaining disciples. Only the Beloved Disciple, likely the eyewitness behind the Fourth Gospel, was one who believed upon finding the tomb empty. No other disciple did. But for most disciples, the empty tomb was not enough. Thus the risen Jesus appears. We see similar movements of faith in our own lives. We find our own empty tombs, signifiers of something greater. But often we do not grasp the full meaning until later, until something equivalent to a resurrection appearance. Let us be attentive to the empty tomb signs and experiences in our lives that leave us pondering, wondering how God is acting in the world. It could be that we will experience a resurrection, new life from death, meaning from loss. From Living Liturgy Dear Parishioners, As I celebrate my first Easter at Saint Andrew s, it is with great joy in my heart that I proclaim: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! This is what we celebrate on Easter Sunday, the joy of Christ risen and alive in our midst. Easter is a most glorious time of the year, a time of happiness, rejoicing and triumph. God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, and the Son so loved us that He gave Himself for our salvation. Without sacrifice there is no love, without the Cross there is no Crown of Victory. This is the day the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). This then is the Joyful Good News: Christ by his death and resurrection has conquered sin so we may live. The Resurrection is the foundation and cornerstone of our faith. As St. Paul says, if Christ has not been raised, then our hope is in vain, and our faith too is in vain (Cf. 1 Cor 15:14). We have just spent 40 days in the Season of Lent, living the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to enable us to be able to make the statements proclaimed above. The Scriptures during Lent are provided by the Church to help us to look honestly at ourselves under the light of God s truth and love, and to see how the effects of sin, which separate us from God, are conquered and defeated by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. May we live as people deeply touched by the resurrection and proclaim: Christ is risen, Alleluia! May our encounter with the risen Lord on our journey of faith touch us deeply and transform us as He did for His Disciples. May the resurrection lead us to be who God created us to be, namely His children; committed to live out our Baptismal covenant, and strengthened by the grace of the Sacraments. My prayer for you this Easter is that you live as people deeply touched by the resurrection and proclaim: Christ is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia! May Our Risen Savior bless you with the peace and confidence of our holy faith which allows us to share in such magnificent mysteries. Please be assured that I will remember you and your loved ones in the Masses I am privileged to celebrate on Easter Day. Father Robert

Certainly, you should have sung in this Easter season, the novice explained. After all, Easter is over. The wise older priest pointed out much more gently than deserved that Easter Day itself lasts eight days, a full week, and only then do we move into the Easter season. Like the obliteration of the reign of death that Easter is, time itself is set on its head. Like the wedding day that, in many cultures, is simply too overflowing with joy to be contained in a single 24 hours, the spirit of hope that is Easter will not be confined. May it rise in your heart this Easter Day! Tuesday, April 03, 2018 Tuesday within the Octave of Easter Acts 2:36-41; John 20:11-18 Sometimes, in the least suspecting places, we can find miracles. For Mary Magdalene it was a tomb where she had gone to weep and grieve the death of Jesus. But instead she found life. She experienced the risen Jesus and became the first person to proclaim that to the world. Somehow in the midst of her grief and sense of loss, Mary left a tiny space for hope that allowed her to recognize the voice of Jesus as he called her name. The possibility for miracles great and small is with us every day. Leave open a space within your heart you just may hear your name being called. Wednesday, April 04, 2018 Wednesday within the Octave of Easter Acts 3:1-10; Luke 24:13-35 The disciples walking the road to Emmaus after Jesus death were disappointed they had expected from him something other than what they saw, and they assumed his mission had failed with his death. There is a lesson in that, taught by Jesus later in the same story when he breaks the bread and opens their eyes: Our expectations can blind us to the blessings right in front of us. Keep your expectations in check and you might find all you could ever hope for, and much more, right in front of your eyes. Thursday, April 05, 2018 Thursday within the Octave of Easter Acts 3:11-26; Luke 24:35-48 The Acts of the Apostles, which we read throughout the season of Easter, is a riveting account of faith, courage, healings, conversions, and a miraculous escape from prison. It is the story of how God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, intervened in the lives of Jesus disciples to ensure the spread of his word throughout the world. The courage of the first followers of Jesus is truly inspirational. Take some time to read Acts this month. Then consider: In what ways is God inviting me to live more courageously? What is keeping me from responding to that invitation? Friday, April 06, 2018 Friday within the Octave of Easter Acts 4:1-12; John 21:1-14 Meeting friends for breakfast is such a delight. There s something about the morning meal together that makes life feel good. The story of the risen Jesus inviting his friends to breakfast strikes that familiar note of unity and peace. Yet the disciples named in the story were all characters that had crossed Jesus in one way or another: Peter the denier, Thomas the doubter, Nathanael the cynic, and the Zebedee brothers, who persisted in their childish sibling rivalry. The morning repast was a reconciliation service and a nice way to start the day. Let that same spirit of unity and reconciliation begin your day today. Saturday, April 07, 2018 Saturday within the Octave of Easter Acts 4:13-21; Mark 16:9-15 Sometimes you have to do what s right even in the face of opposition. Whether it s no reward at best or open hostility at worst, the world around you doesn t always approve of what you know to be the best thing. The apostles ran into the same problem in fact, they were on both sides of it. When the religious authorities ordered them not to speak or teach in Jesus name, they refused to obey. On the other hand, when Mary Magadalene came to some of these same disciples with news of the risen Jesus, they did not believe her. Of course it s unwise to always reject what others think of you. But when faced with a difficult situation, ask God for the wisdom and the strength to do what is right and good. BLESSING OF THE HOME AT EASTER WITH HOLY WATER BRINGS THE POWER, PEACE AND LOVE OF JESUS TO THE HOME. You are welcome to take a holy water container filled with Easter Water, which was blessed during the Easter Vigil, along with the prayer card for the blessing of the home at Easter. All the rooms in your home and all members of the family should be sprinkled with the holy water and blessed. The remainder of the water can be placed on the home altar. Alleluia Christ is Risen!
