5 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 24, 2019 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, February 24, 2019 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23; 1 Corinthians 15:45-49; Luke 6:27-38 A classic device when children are called upon to share something is to have one divide it and the other choose which half is hers. This can happen with a piece of cake, cookie, pizza, or other food. But it can also happen with other items as well. Rarely does one child say to the other You can have it all. The purpose of the divice is to share something in an equitable manner. And perhaps this works for children. It sometimes works for adults too! The advice Jesus gives in today s gospel couldn t be more different. He is calling us to a higher standard. It s as though we are asked to divvy up the treat and instead we say, You can have it all. Even more, the way of sharing a cookie between children might assume they are friendly. But Jesus speaks here of enemies. This is an entirely different category. Jesus assumes his ancient listeners have enemies, and that is something that transcends culture and time. Enemies are not limited to the ancient world! Christians are to love their enemies, blessing them and praying for them. The Christian standard is one higher than what we could expect from the world with its transactional view of relationships. As Jesus himself notes, it s fairly easy to love those who love us, and to do good to those who do good to us. But it s another thing entirely to love those who are our enemies, to pray for them and to bless them. We look to the example of Jesus who enfleshed the words he preached. Jesus himself loved his enemies and prayed for those who persecuted him. In the gospel of Luke we will hear Jesus from the cross pray for their forgiveness. We Christians are to be this way because God is this way. God is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Should we be any different? We are to be merciful as the Father is merciful. And here we see in our own time the example of mercy given to us by Pope Francis. It is said that the work mercy is the hermeneutical key to his papacy. It is the way to understand and make sense of his actions. Pope Francis chose mercy because mercy is of God, and acting in this way demonstrates that we are followers of his son, Jesus. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... Written over 400 years ago, Introduction to the Devout Life is still one of the most popular books for those pursuing holiness. St. Francis de Sales explains how to turn that desire for sanctity into resolutions that yield grace-filled results. Themes include: Pursuing a devout life wholeheartedly Incorporating prayer and sacraments into a busy schedule Growing in virtue Battling wisely against temptation Making spiritual progress through daily, monthly, and yearly exercises Whether you are just beginning your spiritual journey or are more advanced in the spiritual life, you ll be able to apply this timeless wisdom immediately. Let St. Francis de Sales illumine the path to holiness and strengthen your desire to walk that road with the Lord. We will begin a new book study class on Saturday, March 2, following the 8:00 Mass, and continuing on each First Saturday of the month. The class will meet in the Rectory Dining Room. The book can be obtained on Amazon or at any Catholic Bookstore. You may recall several weeks ago that the Chair of the Finance Council addressed the parish after all the weekend Masses to report on the financial state of the parish. He reported that the financial health of the parish was not good due to decreasing revenue and payment on debt with the Diocese for the necessary expansion of the school for our children. In support of the report, I offer the following summary of parish giving over the past 5 years: Saint Andrew Parish Giving Year Amount 2018 $ 461, $ 491, $ (30,458.19) 2016 $ 495, $ (3,408.32) 2015 $ 503, $ (7,745.40) 2014 $ 505, $ (2,304.84) While the exact reason for such decreases is not clear, nevertheless, as a result, and in consultation with the finance council, the decision was made to begin the Journeying Together as a Family of God program to assist with moving the parish forward enabling us to focus on our mission through our discipleship and to temporarily suspend the weekly tithe to local and global charities until such time as we are able to continue to provide for the financial health of the parish.
6 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 24, 2019 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Monday, February 25, 2019 Sirach 1:1-10; Mark 9:14-29 Most people may think they ve left behind those oldfashioned notions of unclean spirits found in the Bible and religious texts of an earlier age, but have they really? Researchers have found that a lot of ancient associations about clean and unclean are still with us, only now we have translated them into the realm of science, health, or nutrition. Think of how concerned people are about the purity of their food and whether their environment is antiseptically clean. It s all well and good to promote health and guard against disease, but don t forget Jesus taught that purity and impurity ultimately are questions of the heart. Tuesday, February 26, 2019 Sirach 2:1-11; Mark 9:30-37 Will you let me be your servant? Let me be as Christ to you. The Richard Gillard hymn with this line has become familiar to many Catholics. Sung at funerals, weddings, Holy Thursday foot washings, and Sunday Mass, the lyrics touch human hearts in their eloquent call to humbly serve the needs of others. Pope Francis, who serves the poor in word and deed, calls us to share in this journey. How can I surrender my need for recognition? How can I serve the needs of others? Wednesday, February 27, 2019 Sirach 4:11-19; Mark 9:38-40 In a a few years back, prelate Gerald Kicanas, former bishop of the Diocese of Tucson, addressed the question of whether Catholic organizations are still actually Catholic if they provide services to all people, Catholic or not. His response was clear and pastoral: The heart of Catholic outreach and social doctrine has been that we are here to serve all, and don t make distinctions. So in our Catholic schools there are young people who are non -Catholic. In our Catholic charities, we serve people who are in need. May the measure of your service and outreach always be love. Thursday, February 28, 2019 Sirach 5:1-8; Mark 9:41-50 One of the most significant documents the American Roman Catholic bishops issued in the 20th century was Justice for All. Issued in 1986, it calls fulfilling the needs of the poor the highest priority of economic policy and employment the most urgent priority for domestic economic policy. Economic rights are fundamental human rights, as much as freedom of speech and religion. Some on Wall Street responded: What can a group of bishops know of high finance? A living Christianity, however, will always speak economic justice to economic power. Speak up for human values as expressed in public budgets. Friday, March 01, 2019 Sirach 6:5-17; Mark 10:1-12 The church s current sacramental system designates seven ritual moments in the life of the church as occasions of particular grace. Any parochial school child can recite them: the initiating sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist; the healing rituals of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick; the vocations of Marriage and Holy Orders. But if there s ever room for an eighth candidate, many might vote for a sacrament of friendship. Who hasn t experienced their closest friends as occasions of grace? And didn t Jesus institute this sacrament just as obviously in the choice of his companions from Galilee to Jerusalem? Express your gratitude to a friend today. Saturday, March 02, 2019 Sirach 17:1-15; Mark 10:13-16 When parents today chauffeur their kids everywhere or buy them the latest fashion item or cell phone, it s hard to fathom how invisible kids were in Jesus day. While he built an entire ministry on reaching out to the least of these, children were the least of the least as we see from the perturbed reaction of the apostles. But Jesus says, Let the children come to me. Could it be that Jesus learned his technique at the knee of Mary, his mother and ours, who so often is depicted with her arms held wide to welcome us all? Women s Lenten Afternoon of Reflection The Corpus Christi Council of Catholic Women is hosting a Women s Lenten Afternoon of Reflection on Saturday, March 9, 2019 in the Corpus Christi Parish Center, 279 North Main Street, Chambersburg from 1:00 3:45pm. It promises to be a wonderful time of spiritual enrichment, prayer, fellowship and Sacrament in preparation for the Season of Lent. Doors open at 12:30pm. There is an opportunity for confession from 3:45 4:45pm and Mass at 5:00pm in the Church. The afternoon will be led by Jim Gontis, Director of Evangelization and Catechesis for the Diocese of Harrisburg. The theme is "God is Calling. The cost is FREE and includes light refreshments. Please bring a rosary. Advance registration is requested to ensure adequate accommodations and refreshments. To register, please contact Angela Danko at AJDanko@comcast.net or at The registration deadline is March 4. Diocesan & Local Happenings The Tribunal of the Diocese of Harrisburg will be giving two presentations within the diocese concerning marriage, divorce and annulment according to Church teaching. These presentations will be helpful for divorced Catholics, those divorced who wish to marry Catholics, those parish leaders involved in the RCIA process and any others who may have a vested interest because of family or friends. No prior registration is required. For further information, please tribunal@hbgdiocese.org or call , extension 304.
