Be Restored by God's Mercy Using the highly-acclaimed Augustine Institute program, Symbolon and Forgiven: The Transforming Power of Confession, A Lent to Remember explores the ways God reaches out to each of us with his mercy. Through Christ s suffering on the cross in the Paschal Mystery and his perpetual reception of his people in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God makes his love, his very self, present to us in the world. By reflecting on the Paschal Mystery and making a step-by-step examination of the Rite of Confession, A Lent to Remember communicates God s invitation to each one of us to come experience his indescribable love this Lent. God was the first potter! God was the first to have the pleasure of taking dust and water, mixing it and smoothing it. And then drawing it into a divine image into which God breathed God s very own life. This Sunday s gospel tells of another divine potter Jesus, the Son of God who uses his own saliva to mix with the dust of the earth, make clay, and use it to bring new seeing and believing out of a blind beggar. All the man needed to do was to obey Jesus command to Go wash. He did so, and recreated to see with the new eyes of faith. Through baptism we come to a new seeing and we are recreated into being more perfect members of the Body of Christ, more truth-filled images of God. Our own believing-responding to Jesus continually re recreates us with new spiritual insight, with deeper believing, with more sure understanding of who Jesus is for us and who we are to be for others. This long gospel intertwines many conversationencounters on many levels. There is the conversationencounter of the miracle: Jesus touched, the man went and washed. There are the conversation-encounters of relationships: the disciples and Jesus, Jesus and the blind man, the neighbors and the blind man, parents and Pharisees, Pharisees and the blind man, Pharisees and Jesus. There are conversation-encounters about seeing: gaining sight, resisting sight; coming to faith; resisting faith. Lent invites us into the same conversation-encounters with Jesus, in which we choose either to be drawn toward Jesus or to turn away from him. Which do we choose? This is our lifelong baptismal challenge. The miracle recorded in this gospel is less about a blind man receiving his sight than about the openness of the blind man to having an encounter with Jesus, his willingness to enter into a conversation with him, and his readiness to believe and respond in worship. This gospel challenges those who are preparing for the Easter sacraments to deepen their faith in Jesus power to recreate them as members of his Body. It challenges all of us to deepen their faith so that we, too, are recreated with ever new Life. Then, like the blind man whom Jesus helps to see, we can exclaim I do believe and worship with raised hearts and voices. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... The Anniversary of our Diocese - Part I by Father Edward Quinlan This year we will observe the 150 th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Harrisburg. It is a good time to ask how we got here. In one sense the story always begins with Jesus call of the Apostles and the founding of the Church. But what about the Church in our country? The first parish in what will later become the United States is founded in the city of St. Augustine in Florida. With the arrival of Spanish settlers and accompanying priests, Mass is offered and a church built. Both the city and the church are named for the saint on whose feast day the voyagers first sighted land a little further down the Florida coast. The first Mass will be celebrated with land fall there on September 8, 1565, the birthday of Mary. In the original 13 colonies the story is different. Many early settlements were created by different Protestant groups fleeing persecution in England and Europe. The most familiar were the Pilgrims who settled in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, while seeking religious freedom for themselves they were not often prepared to extend it to others. Catholics were decidedly not welcome in these settlements, and the presence of the Catholic Church was formally forbidden by English law. The exceptions to this were in Maryland, the colony founded by the Calvert family, who were devout Catholics and other place Catholics were welcome was in our own state of Pennsylvania. William Penn and the Quakers who establish our state were very respectful and tolerated other faiths. In 1720 a Jesuit priest was sent to Maryland for Catholics in the central colonies. Eventually he will move to Philadelphia in order to establish missions for Catholic families in Pennsylvania and beyond. He will build what is affectionately called Old St. Josephs near Independence Hall in This is the first public Catholic church in the colonies and remains in operation today. A few years later he will request the assistance of German speaking Jesuits to help with the significant German Catholic population in the state. St. Mary s Church in Lancaster and Sacred Heart Church in Conewago, both started as mission chapels, also date to the mid 1700 s and will serve as bases for the wide ranging missions extending throughout central and western Pennsylvania.

Your son will live is not medicine. These four words are not magic. Yet they were enough because of the authority of the one who spoke them. Do we believe in the words of Jesus in the same way? Try living as if you do. Start with accepting that your sins are forgiven. This is the miracle of new life that Jesus promises us now and when his Kingdom comes. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 Ezekiel 47:1-9, 12; John 5:1-16 Not long before Jesus heals the sick man at the pool, he encounters the Samaritan woman at the well. The stories have much in common. Neither knew who Jesus was or the power he possessed, but Jesus knew everything about them and offers to wash away their troubles, in fact, without them having to ask or repent first. Both were afflicted and shunned for a long time, coming to the water alone with nobody to help them. Jesus goes ahead and heals them, before they have a clue. But isn t that just like God? Giving us what no one else will give? Giving it to us before we have the sense to ask? Our job: Tell others of God s amazing grace. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 Isaiah 49:8-15; John 5:17-30 God worked to create the world in six days and then rested on the seventh. Thereafter, all creation was called to rest on the seventh day and to observe with God a sabbath of holiness. But the gospel reminds us that God s work continues even after quittin time. Jesus therefore ignores the whistle and stays at his post, doing the work of God even as the world rests from its labors. God s mercy and compassion know no rest. They continue as long as human weakness is in need of healing. Followers of Jesus, therefore, punch in at Baptism and stay on the job until the work is done. Friday, March 16, 2018, A Day of Absinence Wisdom 2:1a, 12-22; John 7:1-2, 10, Where Jesus came from was always a source of trouble. King Herod went after all the babies around Bethlehem because of the prophecy that said the next king would come from there. People later scoffed to hear that Jesus was raised in Nazareth a town that didn t get any respect in cosmopolitan Jerusalem. Some also complained that Jesus came from anywhere at all, because the Messiah s origins ought to be a bit more mysterious. But no one seemed to get where Jesus was coming from in a cosmic sense: from the One who sent him. Are we as clear about our origins? Saturday, March 17, 2018 Saint Patrick, Bishop & Missionary Jeremiah 11:18-20; John 7:40-53 Until the mid-1800s most Irish immigrants in America were middle-class Protestants, but in 1845 Ireland s Great Potato Famine forced nearly 1 million of its poor Catholics to flee to America s shores. Open and hostile anti- Catholicism made it difficult for the new arrivals to find work and be accepted in American society. What helped the Irish Catholics, they soon discovered, was their large population, which when organized gave them political power. There is strength in numbers whether it is in fighting prejudice or showing compassion. Get yourselves and others organized around a just cause and become a force to be reckoned with. The Harrisburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women cordially invites all women of the Diocese to attend the 93rd Annual Convention, Monday, April 16, 2018 from 9am 4pm at the Cardinal Keeler Center, Harrisburg, PA. The theme is Joined in Christ. Bishop Ronald W. Gainer is the principle celebrant & homilist at Mass. The keynote speaker is Rose Folsom, speaking on Cultivating the Garden of Your Soul. Contact Linda at or linda.hartzell@comcast.net to register. Thursday, March 15, 2018 Exodus 32:7-14; John 5:31-47 As Lent proceeds, one of the temptations that can sidetrack us is to start feeling pretty good about ourselves: I am keeping my resolution, I am praying more, I ve asked God to forgive my sins. Soon our hands folded in prayer become fingers pointing at others: They gossip, they lie and steal, they are weak and sinful. We may not be that obvious, but the readings today show that the religious leaders were quick to misjudge. We can t let the good that Lent is doing for us evaporate by failing to embrace and love others. St. Patrick Day Celebration! Saint Patrick s Day Dinner and Dance, Saturday, March 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Leitersburg Pike, Leitersburg, MD. Doors open at 6pm. Corned Beef and Cabbage, Wearin O the Green. Adults $15, children under12, $6. For tickets, call Fred Nugent at or fnugent@verizon.net.
