5 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, June 10, 2018 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Genesis 3:9-15; 2 Corinthians 4:13 5:1; Mark 3:20-35 Today we have a story about Jesus family. In between this story there is another about scribes from Jerusalem attributing Jesus power to Beelzebul, a name for the devil. Mark often uses this literary device of sandwiching one story within another (referred to as Markan sandwich ). The gospel begins with a snippet that is unique to Mark: Jesus relatives come to get him, saying, He is out of his mind. This is hardly the image we have of Jesus own family. But, we are reminded that in Mark, the first canonical gospel that was written, there is no infancy narrative, no annunciation to Mary or Joseph s dream that he should take Mary as his wife. If we had only Mark s gospel, our image of the Holy Family would be quite different. For this story begins with the claim that Jesus is out of his mind, and concludes with Jesus semi-rebuke to his family: Here are my mother and my brothers. / For whoever does the will of God / is my brother and sister and mother. This gospel passage tells us something about the persecuted Markan Christian community of the late first century. For that community especially, bonds of faith in Jesus were stronger than blood relationships. Many of the early Christians left family to join this bank of believers. Remaining family members may have looked down on Christians almost as we regard cult members today. The early Christians were misunderstood by society, persecuted, even killed. They found consolation with other Christians and their common faith in Jesus. Nonbelieving family members through this new religion was strange. Jesus is the prime example of one misunderstood by his family, who thinks he is out of his mind. They come to bring him home, perhaps believing he is an embarrassment. Rather than acquiesce to their demands, he demonstrates that his believers have a bond stronger than blood. Wrapped in this story about Jesus family is another about scribes from Jerusalem who attribute his power to the devil. Not surprisingly, Jesus disputes that. He has been engaged in a battle with evil since the beginning of his ministry. He is not fighting on behalf of evil. A house divided against itself cannot stand. To attribute Jesus activity to the devil is a sin against the Holy Spirit that will no be forgiven. The stakes are high. Jesus seems to be getting it from all sides. His family, who raised him, and the scribes, who are experts in the law, do not understand him. He is thought to be out of his mind by some and by others to be possessed by a demon. Neither is very flattering! But Jesus stays true to who he is and counters each assault. The community he is forming is something new, based not on familial relations, but stronger than family. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... With the conclusion of the Solemnity of Corpus Christ, our Sunday Masses will Ordinary Time An extra-ordinary Season now return to those of Ordinary Time in the Church year. While the word ordinary is often used to describe things that are nondescript or dull, for the Church it means customary, regular, and orderly. So, Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons. There is nothing dull about Ordinary Time! Ordinary time is the longest liturgical season in the Catholic Church, encompassing either 33 or 34 weeks each year. Ordinary time is technically one liturgical season, though it is divided into two time periods, the two time periods after Epiphany and after Pentecost. The first portion of Ordinary Time focuses on the childhood of Jesus and then on the public ministry of Christ. The second portion of Ordinary Time begins after Pentecost, is much longer than the first lasting from the day after Pentecost through the final day before Advent. Because this portion of Ordinary Time occurs after the celebrations of Jesus Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension, this segment of Ordinary Time is focused on the Age of the Church. The Age of the Church is the age we live in now, the time that exists between the Age of the Apostles and the second and last coming of Christ for which we are preparing. This period of Ordinary Time is also focused on Christ s reign as King of kings; the Feast of Christ the King caps off the season of Ordinary Time as the final Sunday before Advent begins. May your life with Christ make the ordinary, extraordinary for you! Daily Readings & Reflections Monday, June 11, 2018 Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12 Do you have trouble standing up to peer pressure? Learn from Saint Barnabas. Though he wasn t one of the original apostles, he stood up to Peter and James and others in defense of Paul, who had once persecuted Christians but then wanted to be one. And when even Peter was reluctant to fraternize with converted gentiles, Barnabas held that Jesus message was meant for everyone. He was a man whose word was good, not only to be relied on but because he was a great preacher to be inspired by. Next time you re feeling peer pressure, pray for the help of Barnabas. Tuesday, June 12, Kings 17:7-16; Matthew 5:13-16 Salt is such an ordinary, inexpensive, and easily found substance in most cases nowadays that you can fail to fully grasp the profound meaning of Jesus famous metaphor. Consider these facts. Once known as white gold, salt is necessary for

6 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 human life. It preserves, purifies, and enhances the flavor of food. It made civilization possible. Wars have been waged over supplies of salt; it has been taxed, hoarded, traded, and used as currency; and it helped galvanize Mohandas Gandhi s nonviolent movement for India s independence from Britain. When Jesus compares his disciples to salt of the earth, he is really saying: Your life and presence matter. In fact, you are more than valuable you are essential. Be alert for opportunities to be salt for the world today. Wednesday, June 13, 2018 Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest & Doctor of the Church 1 Kings 18:20-39; Matthew 5:17-19 Saint Francis of Assisi had a healthy skepticism about academic pursuits. In the Middle Ages the accolades a noted scholar might enjoy could leave gospel poverty in the dust. When Anthony of Padua asked to join Francis new Order of Penance, however, Francis saw that Anthony was able to combine brilliance and oratorical power with fidelity to the gospel and simplicity. Francis even welcomed Anthony to bring his precious books with him they were the tools of his trade and entrusted to his care the training of brothers seeking to become priests. You may find yourself juggling values that seem at odds with each other, like being a bread-earner and a caring mom or dad. Saint Anthony knew that the gifts of God even those most esteemed like intelligence, power, and wealth are still gifts as long as they're balanced with humility. Thursday, June 14, Kings 18:41-46; Matthew 5:20-26 The American flag was adopted on this day in 1777, and ever since it has been a cherished symbol of everything this country holds dear. As President Calvin Coolidge observed, It represents our peace and security, our civil and political liberty, our freedom of religious worship, our family, our friends, our home. But, he noted, it is equally a symbol of responsibility. As a nation the United States has its share of problems, disagreements, and failures. Today is a good day to reflect on the sacrifices your ancestors made and consider how you might carry on their work so that your grandchildren may live in the freedom the Stars and Stripes proclaim. Friday, June 15, Kings 19:9a, 11-16; Matthew 5:27-32 The prophet Elijah had a lot on his plate. Defending the one true God, battling kings and even other prophets, and going through quite a bit of hardship in the process. And when he went to talk with God on God s own mountain, conditions were not calm. The wind blew strong enough to split rocks. Then an earthquake rolled the ground. Oh, and there was fire, too did we mention that? But God was not in the wind, the quake, or the fire. Rather God was in a tiny whispering sound. That was what awed Elijah and led him to cover his face. Sometimes the voice of God isn t found in spectacular special effects but in the smallest, quietest way. Can you hear it? Saturday, June 16, Kings 19:19-21; Matthew 5:33-37 The taking of an oath has a long history and some curious customs, such as an ancient Jewish practice of placing one s hand under the thigh of the person to whom one swears the oath. Today you raise your hand or place it on a sacred book. But as Jesus pointed out, no oaths should be necessary. All your words should be trustworthy. Be a person who keeps your word; the confidence, trust, and respect of others will follow. And as Mark Twain pointed out: Tell the truth and you don t have to remember anything. Diocesan & Local Happenings MARRIAGE ANNULMENTS The Tribunal of the Diocese of Harrisburg will be giving a presentation within the diocese concerning marriage, divorce and annulment according to Church teaching. This presentation will be helpful for divorced Catholics, those divorced who wish to marry Catholics, those parish leaders involved in the RCIA process and any others who may have a vested interest because of family and friends. June 14 - St. Patrick Parish, Carlisle, 7 pm No prior registration is required. For further information, please call , extension 304, or tribunal@hbgdiocese.org or visit /annulments. Quo Vadis & Fiat Days: at Mount St. Mary s University & Seminary. Our Lord Jesus Christ has a great plan and mission for you! It s a great opportunity to know Jesus more deeply and help you to discern your vocation in life while having a lot of fun with other Catholic young men and women. Listen to the Lord s call in your life while having fun. There is a $50 registration fee; all other expenses funded by the Diocese of Harrisburg. Registration forms can be found on our website at Quo Vadis Days: June 24-27, 2018 for Catholic young men ages Deadline for registration is June 17, Fiat Days July 1-3, 2018 for Catholic young women ages Deadline for registration is June 24, In our Catholic tradition, light has a special significance Jesus said, I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12) and I came into the world as light, so that every one who believes in me might not remain in darkness (John 12:46) The symbolism does remind us that prayer is a coming into the light of Christ, allowing our souls to be filled with His light, and letting that light burn on in our souls even though we may return to our other activities. In Saint Andrew Church, we have two seven day candles burning on the sides of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. Parishioners can offer a donation and let these candles be lit in memory of their beloved ones. Please contact the parish office for more information.
