If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please contact Peg Wagaman at , ext. 6 or by at dre@standrewwbo.org In our Catholic tradition, light has a special significance Jesus said, I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12) and I came into the world as light, so that every one who believes in me might not remain in darkness (John 12:46) The symbolism does remind us that prayer is a coming into the light of Christ, allowing our souls to be filled with His light, and letting that light burn on in our souls even though we may return to our other activities. In Saint Andrew Church, we have two seven day candles burning on the sides of the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph. Parishioners can offer a donation and let these candles be lit in memory of their beloved ones. Please contact the parish office for more information. The community of Saint Andrew the Apostle welcomes the newly baptized child of God, Gabriella Natalia Figueroa, into our Catholic family. May she continue to grow in God s love and grace. Sacrament of Baptism Baptism is normally celebrated following the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass. Parents must be registered members of the parish and attend a baptism preparation class (held monthly) prior to the baptism. The requirements for godparents are established by the Catholic Church. Please call the parish office for information. Sacrament of Marriage Diocesan policy requires 9 to 12 months of preparation for Marriage. Contact the parish as soon as possible after engagement. No arrangements should be made prior to consultation with the pastor. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Anointing of the sick should be given if an individual is gravely ill or near death. If possible, the Sacrament should also be administered before major surgery or when one is hospitalized. 5 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, July 15, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Amos 7:12-15; Ephesians 1:3-14 or 1:3-10; Mark 6:7-13 Discipleship is a word tossed out quite often in Christian circles. The word disciple connotes follower, and being a follower is not something that is praised in our modern culture, which puts a premium on leadership, executives, and alpha types. For a Christian there is only one alpha, who is Jesus. No disciple of Jesus ever takes the place of the master. The disciples are always just that, disciples, followers. Even though the disciples will never achieve the rank of master, in the Gospel of Mark today Jesus gives the Twelve authority. He sends them on mission in six groups of two. The very word mission means to be sent. This will be the model for Christian evangelization. They travel light, without bread, bag, or money. They rely solely upon the kindness and generosity of those they meet. They are to remain in one house until they leave, not trading up as it were the longer they stayed. Their preaching is basically that of John the Baptist and the early days of Jesus himself, Repent. In their preaching the disciples also exercised their authority over evil, over the demons, over sickness, and over the unclean spirits. The authority that Jesus shared with his disciples for this mission meant that they too, like him, were agents of inclusion. They brought those from the margins into a relationship of wholeness. Like him, their deeds were coupled with preaching. The demand for repentance was paramount; and we can surmise that the demand was not received well by all, as Jesus instructions for shak[ing] the dust off your feet indicate. Not all disciples were chosen for this mission, but only the Twelve. The mission is to go out preaching and performing works of mercy. This probably doesn t sound much like parish plans today for the new evangelization. But this is the mission of the Twelve and we might find something worthy of emulation here. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... The Story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast July 16th Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah in northern Israel in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726, it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries, the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Saint Teresa of Avila called Carmel the Order of the Virgin. Saint John of the Cross credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel, and helping him escape from prison. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion day, Thérèse dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition, that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance a call that Mary models in a splendid way. Father Robert Daily Readings & Reflections Monday, July 16, 2018 Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Isaiah 1:10-17; Matthew 10:34 11:1 Death has a way of focusing one s attention. You may intend someday to pay more attention to your faith and get right with God. But, as you learned in school, you shouldn t postpone studying until the night before finals. Today is the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who in 1251 appeared to Saint Simon Stock, an English Carmelite, and bestowed on him the scapular and the promise to intercede at the hour of death for all who wore it in life. The original scapular was the brown sleeveless tunic that is still a part of the Carmelite habit today. The best way to prepare for a good death is to live a better life starting today.

6 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Tuesday, July 17, 2018 Isaiah 7:1-9; Matthew 11:20-24 As you take some time for fun and pleasure this summer, remember that what you are doing is holy. It is our duty to rest, repair, and restore ourselves. Several times a year that actually means vacating our normal routine and residence. The word vacation comes from the Latin vacare, to be empty, be free. Taking a vacation is a separate and very different act from making a retreat (from the Latin for withdraw ), though that, too, is often a holy act. Without the release a vacation provides, our lives can easily get thrown off balance, which leads to stress, exhaustion, apathy, and eventually hardness of heart a trait Jesus condemns in today s gospel. Wednesday, July 18, 2018 Memorial of Saint Camillus de Lellis, Priest Isaiah 10:5-7, 13b-16; Matthew 11:25-27 A six-foot-six-inch-tall soldier, strong and commanding, Camillus was brought low by pain and disease. His addiction to gambling led him to poverty. Instead of giving up, he worked to heal others and brought others to toil with him. Now he is the patron saint of hospitals and the sick as well as of nurses. He used the limitations, pain, and shortcomings of his own life to bring healing to others and to sanctify himself. What ails us today that we can use to help others and ourselves? Thursday, July 19, 2018 Isaiah 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Matthew 11:28-30 It makes a difference whether you know someone s name. To be introduced to a person involves learning their name. It puts you on personal terms. It was the same for the ancient Israelites, even when it came to God. When Moses asked God who he should say sent him, God revealed the divine name to Moses to tell the people. In this way they would know the Lord cared for them and would act on their behalf. Call on the Lord by name and ask God to be active in your life. Friday, July 20, 2018 Memorial of Saint Apollinaris, Bishop & Martyr Isaiah 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; Matthew 12:1-8 Today we honor the first bishop of Ravenna in Italy. Originally from Antioch, Saint Apollinaris was given his assignment by Saint Peter to continue to make inroads in the spread of Christianity. Apollinaris faced constant persecution and was eventually martyred by the Romans. The city where he served, Ravenna, has become renowned for the beautiful mosaics that adorn its churches and monuments. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city s sacred art is considered one of the best surviving examples of the blending of Western and Eastern styles. Apollinaris, a man from the east who took the message of Christ west, would be proud. What inroads will you make in spreading the gospel today? Saturday, July 21, 2018 Memorial of Saint Lawrence of Brindisi, Priest & Doctor of the Church Micah 2:1-5; Matthew 12:14-21 In his Personal Narrative, the early American sermon writer Edward Fitzgerald reveals something important about love when he says, I have greatly longed of late for a broken heart, and to lie low before God. It is unlikely any of us long for a broken heart. But to consider a broken heart a gift, Fitzgerald must have seen something akin to what Saint Lawrence of Brindisi approached when he wrote, Love stirs itself from sorrow; and love itself is in equal measure lanced with sorrow. The lower we lie in sorrow, the further we can experience God s sacrificial love that comes down to us. Moreover, the pureness of our emotions when we are steeped in sorrow allows us to offer up to God a supple material for his grace. Instead of fearing your brokenness, use it to open to God's grace. Diocesan Happenings Save the Dates Oberammergau Passion Play Mark your calendars now for a once-in-a-decade opportunity to see the Oberammergau Passion Play in Bishop Ronald Gainer will lead a pilgrimage from the Diocese of Harrisburg to experience this breathtaking play depicting the Passion of Jesus. This moving production only takes place every 10 years. In addition to the play on September 12, 2020, the trip will include visits to cities like Paris, Milan, Turin, Riva Del Guardia, Innsbruck, Oberammergau, Salzburg, and Munich.
