It is difficult to find enough words of thanksgiving for their many, many years of dedicated service to this parish. They have always been so attentive to our many needs, whether it be maintaining flowers on the altar, faithful service at daily Mass, assisting with the maintenance of the cemetery, serving as EMHC, organizing senior trips, making those extra donations for specific needs for the church or providing the stained glass articles that adorn our church. May God continue to bless you both as you continue your life journey in Missouri. Parents must be registered members of the parish and attend a baptism preparation class (held monthly) prior to the baptism. The requirements for godparents are established by the Catholic Church. Please call the parish office for information. Sacrament of Marriage Diocesan policy requires 9 to 12 months of preparation for Marriage. Contact the parish as soon as possible after engagement. No arrangements should be made prior to consultation with the pastor. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Anointing of the sick should be given if an individual is gravely ill or near death. If possible, the Sacrament should also be administered before major surgery or when one is hospitalized. 4 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 4 Jubilee Food Drive Saint Andrew Catholic Church will be collecting extra food throughout the month of June to benefit Waynesboro Community & Human Services. This will help meet the high demand on their food bank in the summer when students are not in school. Please fill a Jubilee bag (found in the church vestibule) with non-perishable food and place it in the back of the church between June 1 and July 2. Thank you very much for your generosity! VEGGIE SUNDAY First Sunday Food Focus for July On the first weekend in July, in order to better balance our food donations for Waynesboro Community and Human Services, the Social Outreach Ministry is asking you to focus your donations on vegetables. Examples include nonperishable (canned or dried) beans, peas, potatoes, greens, carrots, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms, and beets. Mass Times for Traveling Catholics don t forget to include Mass in your travel plans! When you are planning your travels, go to enter a zip code, city, state, country or area code for Catholic Church locations and Mass times. A volunteer is needed to assist in maintaining the pamphlet rack in the vestibule of the church. Duties would include ordering new items for the various liturgical seasons of the year through the Stewardship Mission. Each volunteer works only two months at a time...six times a year! Please come and help! In just 2 months, families will be getting ready to go back to school. Some families in our community will be looking at their children s class supply lists wondering how they will be able to afford everything on the list as well as get school clothes for their ever-growing children and pay their rent and other household bills. From August 13 17, Waynesboro Community & Human Services will be distributing back to school supplies to income eligible families in the Waynesboro Area School District and the Greencastle Antrim School District. With your help, WCHS will be ready to distribute both school supplies and clothing. The school supply list will be published in an upcoming bulletin. Working together, we can offer hope and assurance that we live in a community that cares!

5 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, July 1, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24; 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15; Mark 5:21-43 A n o t h e r M a r k a n s a n d w i c h greets us today, a s t o r y wrapped in a n o t h e r story. The story of the w o m a n t o u c h i n g Jesus garment is sandwiched between the story of Jairus s daughter being raised from the dead. Mark tells the stories with such detail and verbosity that when Matthew has a chance to include them in his gospel he condenses the entire episode to fewer than ten verses! (See Matt 9:18-26.) But for Mark, these details provide a color commentary and give us, the readers, a sense of what was going on. There are some surprising details in Mark that Matthew leaves out. For example, when the woman with a hemorrhage reaches out to touch only Jesus garments, power immediately flows out of him. He is unaware of who touched him. Indeed he asks the crowd who touched him! When he finds out, he tells the woman that her faith has made her well. This is not all the Matthew tells the story. For him, the woman merely thinks to herself that if she touches his garments she will be made well. Jesus then turns to her and says so. He is fully and completely aware. The difference in stories (there are many other differences as well) is part of the reason scholars believe Mark was written prior to Matthew. The earlier, Markan story was made better by Matthew. Yet, the Markhan story preserves for us something that might approximate the historical Jesus more closely. The story that forms a bookend around the woman with a hemorrhage is the raising of Jairus daughter. Here Jesus continues his confrontation with evil, this time death. And he is victorious. Before he even arrives at the home, the twelve-year-old girl is pronounced dead. Jesus replies that she is only asleep, for which he is ridiculed and laughed at. But in the end, he raises the girl and admonishes the three disciples who were with him not to say anything. Jesus power is on clear display. Merely touching his garment with an act of faith is enough to heal somebody. Jesus himself raises the dead to new life. His identity is coming into sharper focus as we journey with him through this gospel. From Living Liturgy From our Pastor s Pen... When we examine the dominant culture pulsing through American media, public schools and town halls, being Catholic in America is a challenge. We don t need to overdramatize this tension; we are not in danger like our Catholic, Coptic and Orthodox brothers and sisters in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The challenges we face are more subtle and pervasive. The enemy does not carry a gun or a suicide bomb and endanger our physical lives. The enemy eats away at us inwardly or through our children. Think about the 57 million babies aborted since the US Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, and the position of being Catholic in America seems increasingly untenable. Think about the march toward redefining marriage that continues to gain acceptance across the US, and wonder how our children will hold to the basic tenets of natural law. Watch the bombardment of pop culture which accepts immorality of language and action as normal, and wonder how our children will learn to live by true principles. Too often, our Catholic voices seem faint amidst the roaring dominant culture. Yet, God placed us here in our particular families, within our particular communities and parishes, and in our particular nation. This is not accidental but providential. Given that fact, we must ask God how we are to serve where He has placed us. The Church tells us we are to serve in the closest spheres first: our home, our parish, our communities. This is where we have the most effective impact. Catholics play a vital role in reminding America of its fundamental principles, and we must continue to take an active role as citizens to witness to those principles in all aspects of life. The Catholic commitment to life aligns perfectly with the first principles established in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The problem is persistent and worldwide an estimated 100 million people lack stable housing. The reasons are many and complex, from chronic unemployment to substance abuse to mental illness to natural disaster. But while none of us may be able to solve homelessness alone, each of us can respond to it with compassion. The website.org offers some ideas and opportunities. Find a way to help someone you are likely to meet Jesus along the way!

6 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Tuesday, July 03, 2018 Memorial of Saint Thomas the Apostle Ephesians 2:19-22; John 20:24-29 Saint Thomas is famous for his skepticism toward initial reports of Jesus Resurrection. Truth be told, you might wonder if you d believe in such fabulous goings-on if they were reported to you today. Good news often seems feeble compared with the magnitude of the bad news that comes daily. Thomas is the patron saint when the reasons for hope appear frail. Early traditions say he died as a martyr in India, pierced by a sword. The one whose faith was bolstered by the wounds of Jesus proved his faith with his own torn body. What has faith cost you, and do you have the scars to prove it? Wednesday, July 04, 2018 Mass for Independence Day Amos 5:14-15, 21-24; Matthew 8:28-34 Demonizing enemies, including religious and political ones, is one of the unsavory ways in which religious language can be abused. One s opponent becomes not merely wrong but evil incarnate. As we celebrate the nation we love and that we wish were always right, pure, and honorable above all others we must acknowledge our government s sometime misuse of our wealth and power. Pray that citizen and government alike may call upon the Lord to free us from whatever possesses us that is not of God. Thursday, July 05, 2018 Memorial of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal Amos 7:10-17; Matthew 9:1-8 What a life of bitterness I am leading, said Saint Elizabeth of Portugal ( ). On whom but God can I depend? These anguished words came from a woman who was married to the king of Portugal at 12, endured his philandering, watched their son lead an armed revolt against his own father, and was banished for a time by her husband. How did she deal with all these problems? By turning to prayer and works of mercy, including founding a hospital, a house for former prostitutes, an orphanage, and a pilgrim hostel. Elizabeth s example counsels us not to endure abusive situations but to turn our pain into healing, both for others and ourselves. Friday, July 06, 2018 Memorial of Saint Maria Goretti, Virgin & Martyr Amos 8:4-6, 9-12; Matthew 9:9-13 The story of Maria Goretti, the young virgin and martyr whose feast we celebrate today, is one that generations have read with a mixture of fascination and horror. Maria was only 11 years old when she was murdered by a would-be rapist. That s the horrific part of her story. The fascinating part is Maria s deathbed forgiveness of her attacker and his subsequent conversion. It might seem hard, even impossible at times, but the important thing to remember about forgiveness is that it s good for us. We benefit far more than the person we have forgiven. So, do something nice for yourself today: Forgive someone. Saturday, July 07, 2018 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Amos 9:11-15; Matthew 9:14-17 Glory is a funny word. We all use it; many of us want it. But what is it, really? How much does it cost, and what good does it do to have it? The Hebrew word for glory means heaviness. It refers to the importance of a thing: The heavier it is, the more significant or valuable it is, like a gold bar at Fort Knox. God s glory denotes God s overall sovereignty in the world. Could anything be heavier than the authority of a God who can create a world or destroy one! at will? Yet God chooses to take that weighty power and use it to transform death into life for the sake of those afflicted by mortality. Pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary today and praise the God whose glory brings peace to the world.
