We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. (Matthew 2: 1-2) The word epiphany means "manifestation," "enlightenment," and "revelation." Something or someone is revealed, and we are enlightened. The journey of the Magi is our journey too. What are the ways in which I have become enlightened as I have come to know Christ? How has Christ been made known to me? Para obtener más información, por favor llame a Alex Huddleston al o a Sonia Huddleston Coats for Kids: Thank You for Your Generosity Several weeks ago, the Knights of Columbus asked for donations from parishioners after Sunday Masses to purchase coats for children in families that could not otherwise afford winter wear for their kids. Our goal was to purchase 100 coats. Due to the overwhelming generosity of the San Francisco Solano parishioners, we received enough donations to purchase 168 coats! Most of the coats were distributed on December 16 through the Parish Food Bank. In the spirit of the Christmas season, the Knights of Columbus council thanks the San Francisco Solano parishioners for making a difference in the lives of local children and their families. May you continue to receive God s blessings throughout the New Year.

3 Parish Ministries Monthly Adoration The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ and He calls us to spend time with Him in prayer and adoration. Each month, we have a 24-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We encourage you to consider spending some time with Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Morning, afternoon, and evening time slots are available. Our next 24-hour adoration is February 6-7. As Jesus said to his apostles who slept while he prayed in the Garden prior to his arrest and crucifixion, Could you not spend one hour with me? Pray the Rosary and other prayers led by the Filipino Rosary Group after the 8:30 Mass Monday through Friday. Please join us. MOPS is open for registration for the Spring 2017 semester. MOPS is a group for mothers with infants to kindergartenaged children. This group will uplift and encourage busy moms through fun-filled mornings of prayer, guest speakers, crafts, and fellowship while our little ones experience quality childcare and fun activities, like playtime, music, and crafts; all with large amounts of God's love. Need for Extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to Our Spanish Speaking Home Bound The Ministry for Holy Communion to the home bound is in need of Spanish speaking people to help bring Holy Communion to our Spanish-speaking parishioners who are unable to attend the Holy Mass. Do you speak Spanish and have a love for our Eucharistic Lord? Would you like to share your gifts serving in a ministry that brings Jesus Real Presence to others? If you are interested and would like to find out more about this ministry please contact Jeannie Richard ( ). 3 Catholic Men s Fellowship Catholic Men's Fellowship meets on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month. Dinner is at 6:30 PM and the program begins at 7 PM in the Parish Center. It is an opportunity for men to open their hearts and strengthen their faith and friendships. DAY TRIP The Pageant of Our Lord A wonderful way to end the season of Lent When: Sunday, April 9, 2017 (Palm Sunday) Time: 3:00 PM Place: Rolling Hills Covenant Church See 15 pieces of art presented by live models (ala Pageant of the Masters), with 60 voice choir and narration. The presentation depicts the Biblical history of the Old and New Testaments as told through works of art, replicated live on stage. For more information please contact Carre Wertepny at Update on our Youth Faith Formation Program Following the changes in our YFF leadership you read about late last year I am pleased to let you know that Amy Franklin will be directing the YFF program for our Kindergarten through 8 th grade. She will directly lead the Middle School program and oversee other areas. Marjorie Kollen, who led the VBS the past 2 summers, will be coordinating the Kindergarten through 5 th grade program and also leading the Sacramental Preparation programs for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. She will also assist families with children in our RCIC program preparing for the Sacraments. Jenna Mish was married in December! She is now Jenna DiBernardo and continues as Youth Minister and Coordinator for Confirmation in the 9th through 12th grades. During this time, children hear and discuss God's word on their level. Children then return to their families to finish the celebration of Mass. 6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith The Glossary There are a number of words and terms used in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that we know we have heard but may be unsure of their actual meaning. Following is part of the Glossary used in the catechism: Absolution: An essential element of the sacrament of penance in which the priest, by the power entrusted to the church by Christ, pardons the sins of the penitent. Adoration: The acknowledgment of God as God, Creator, and Savior, the Lord and master of everything that exists. Through worship and prayer, the church and individual persons give to God the adoration which is the first act of the virtue of religion. The first commandment of the law obliges us to adore God. Amen: A Hebrew word meaning "truly, it is so, let it be done" signify agreement with what has been said. The prayers of the New Testament and of the Church's liturgy, and the creeds, conclude with "Amen." Jesus used the word to introduce solemn assertions, to emphasize their trustworthiness and authority. Anamnesis: The "remembrance" of God's saving deeds in history in the liturgical action of the church, which inspires Thanksgiving and praise. Every Eucharistic prayer contains an Anamnesis or memorial in which the Church calls to mind the passion, resurrection, and glorious return of Christ Jesus. Angel: A spiritual, personal, and immortal creature, with intelligence and free will, who glorifies God without ceasing and serves God as a messenger of his saving plan. Anger: An emotion which is not in itself wrong, but which, when it is not controlled by reason or hardens into resentment and hate, becomes one of the seven capital sins. Christ taught that anger is an offense against the fifth commandment. Anointing: A symbol of the Holy Spirit, whose "anointing" of Jesus as Messiah fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. Christ (in Hebrew Messiah) means the one "anointed" by the Holy Spirit. Anointing is the sacramental sign of confirmation called Christian initiation in the churches of the East. Anointings form part of the liturgical rites of the catechumenate, and of the sacraments of baptism and holy orders. Apostasy: The total repudiation of the Christian faith. Apostle: A term meaning one who we sent as Jesus was sent by the father, and as he sent his chosen disciples to preach the gospel to the whole world. He called the 12 to become his apostles, chosen witnesses of his resurrection and the foundation on which the church is built. The apostolic office is permanent in the church, in order to ensure that the divine mission entrusted to the apostles by Jesus will continue to the end of time. The bishops receive their office and successors of the apostles to the sacrament of holy orders. Apparition: An appearance to people on earth of a heavenly being Christ, Mary, an angel, or a saint. The apparitions of Jesus in his risen body to his disciples occurred between Easter and his ascension into heaven. Atheism: The denial in theory and/or practice that God exists. Atheism is a sin against the virtue of religion required by the first commandment of the law.
