When Jesus heard this he said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, Let us go back to Judea." When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise." Martha said, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world." He became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Sir, come and see." And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him." But some of them said, Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?" So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, said to him, he has been dead for four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, He cried out in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go." Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him. (John 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33B-45) When Martha saw Jesus after her brother Lazarus died, she said, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. We too are believers, and have witnessed death in many ways. Sometimes it is the death of the neighborhood to crime. Other times it is the death of an innocent and beloved individual. Discipleship never meant instant healing, wealth, or lives of prosperity. Discipleship is about a joy in being in relationship with the Lord. This brings a piece beyond human understanding, and with discipleship, comes life. Stations of the Cross and Lenten Soup Suppers The final Stations of the Cross and Lenten Soup Supper, sponsored by the Spanish Prayer Group, is this Friday. Meatless soups, bread, and water will be served in the Hall starting at 6 PM, followed by Stations of the Cross in the Church at 7 PM. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians, the Living Stones of the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on this collection for their well-being. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are also supporting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. 4 Parish Ministries Easter Lily Memorial Donation Remember a loved one or give thanks for blessings in your life with flowers to adorn our church for the Easter season. You may drop off the lily at the parish office anytime during Holy Week but no later than noon on Good Friday. If you need to drop it off after hours or on Good Friday, a table with materials needed to mark your lily will be placed in front of the parish office. Palms If you would like your old palms to be burned in the Easter Vigil bonfire, you may bring them in between now and April 14 (Good Friday) and leave them in the basket located near the offertory table in the back of the church. Lent has begun Lent offers us the opportunity to prepare for the celebration of Easter, to walk with the catechumens preparing for the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation and for those of us who are baptized to prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises through penitential practices. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit." Bishop Vann calls Catholics in the Diocese of Orange to observe these Lenten penitential practices: Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. No Catholic will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed. Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. a. On these two days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. b. Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. We invite you as a parishioner of San Francisco Solano parish to have a life-changing Lent: Lent is a time when you might choose to do more than the minimum to choose something that will help you grow spiritually through attending daily Mass, adding some time for prayer or doing other spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Sign up for Best Lent Ever at BestLentEver.com and receive a daily from Matthew Kelly, author of Resisting Happiness. He will provide a brief inspirational video and a practical tip for spiritual growth. There s also a Study Guide for more reflection. Matthew s encouragement is Don t Give Up Chocolate For Lent! Spend some time each Friday of Lent with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. We will have Eucharistic Adoration each Friday beginning after the 8:30 AM Mass and concluding before the evening Soup Supper and Stations of the Cross. Join 40 Days for Life: This prayerful, peaceful pro-life campaign has touched many lives and saved thousands of lives from abortion. You can pray and fast for the 40 Days of Lent with others for this intent. You can join a peaceful vigil at an abortion facility near us see the posters on our bulletin board any day between 7 AM and 7 PM. You can join in bringing the Church s positive pro-life message to your corner of our world. Pray at your Family Dinner Table each night: Take a table-top Lenten Prayers for Hungry People provided by Bread for the World and add your prayer and action at home to your Lenten growth in faithful living. 4
