2 The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) November 2, 2014 Letter Letter from from the the Pastor Pastor The Feast of All Souls D ear Friends, We of faith live by that we have not seen, yet believe. We see destruction, yet believe in salvation. We see spiritual indifference, yet believe in the Lord s faithfulness. We see selfishness, yet believe in the Lord s love. We see falsity, yet believe in the truth of the Gospel. Perhaps the great sadness in life is to live without faith. But faith that courageously clings to the unseen and lives by it also hopes at the same time for the day of seeing and having that for which we long. Faith hopes with the certainty of a hungry child whose father has promised him or her bread, who can wait for a while, but in the end, really desires that bread. Faith hopes with the certainty of someone listening to music, who is willing to stay with it through the dissonances, but in the certainty that harmony (great beauty!) will come. From faith comes hope. Yet, there is something greater than faith and hope. What is greater is the love that gives, the love that transforms, the love that remembers, the love that serves, the love that offers compassion, the love that sets aside everything for the sake of the other. Faith and hope enter the life and joy of heaven transformed into the shape of love. Haven t we witnessed love s great beauty and fulfillment in our loved ones who have passed beyond our sight? In the end, which is the beginning, everything must become love. And so, how readily and easily we acknowledge and celebrate our departed loved ones share in the fullness of God s life and love with all the Saints in Heaven like the life and joy and love around the family table. Perhaps we are aware of the jazz funerals in New Orleans. These funerals achieve a fine balance between grief and joyful celebration. Mourners are led by a band comprised of several different instruments. At first, the band plays sorrowful songs, but in time, the band plays upbeat and joyful songs, such as, When the Saints God Marching In. Isn t today s Feast much like a jazz funeral a co-mingling of sadness and joy? And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day. (John 6:37-40) Our faith tells us that our prayers can be of use to the dead as they continue their journey to blessedness with God. And so, today, we pray for all those who have "gone before us marked with the sign of faith" as we hear in the Eucharistic prayer. We celebrate Mass, so that the saving sacrifice of Christ, renewed in their memory, may cleanse them from sin and bring them to eternal life. This is a day for hope. The gospel fills us with confidence: "This is the will of the One who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what He gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day." Please contact Frank Nainoa, franknainoa@ .phoenix.edu, if you are interested in participating. All participants must be at least 18 years old. Corazon is an Outreach ministry that serves families in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico. A Parish Core Team coordinates the project, which includes a house building day and a coat and blanket drive. Parishioners participate through donating time and skills on build day, donating blankets and coats during drive, financial support to underwrite the cost of the build, prayer. Reasons for going to Mexico to build a home include: Most families we serve live in shacks that have canvas or cardboard walls and ceilings. Most families we serve live in a Third World environment and are less than 100 miles from South Orange County. The house we build will last, on average, 24 years and will provide shelter for families that currently live in an exposed environment. Most children do not attend school after the second grade due to the cost of the public school ($500 per year). A typical family living in a 300-square-foot shack consists of a mother, father, and three children. Corazon has been building homes in and around Tijuana and Tecate since 1978; they average one home per weekend and have become part of the local community. Still, there is an overwhelming demand for new housing and basic living needs. The 400-square-foot house that we will build will consist of four walls, a floor that is slightly elevated above the ground to keep it dry during the winter SFS Women s Spanish Prayer Group We invite you to come and join us for worshipping, prayer, scripture, and meditation and thanksgiving with other women every other Thursday at 11:00 am in the Perez home. 7 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK November 2-8, 2014 is National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW), an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on January 13 in Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November. Pope Francis, in his November 2013 apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, underlined the continued need to build a culture of vocations. The fraternal life and fervor of the community can awaken in the young a desire to consecrate themselves completely to God and to preaching of the Gospel. This is particularly true if such a living community prays insistently for vocations and courageously proposes to its young people the path of special consecration, Pope Francis wrote. A culture of vocations is one that provides the necessary support for others to hear and respond to God s call in their lives, said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Raleigh, North Carolina, chairman of the U.S. bishops Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations. With God s grace, we help build that culture through fervent prayer, the witness of our lives and the encouragement we extend to those discerning a vocation to priesthood or consecrated life. These are some sample prayers for vocations: Parents Prayer for Vocations Almighty and eternal God, in your unfailing love you provide ministers for your Church. We pray for those whom you call to serve the Church of Orange as priests. Inspire in them a generous response. Grant them courage and vision to serve your people May their lives and service call your people to respond to the presence of your Spirit among us that, faithful to the Gospel and hope of Jesus the Christ, we may: announce glad tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives, set prisoners free and renew the face of the earth. Prayer #2 O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Prayer #3 Loving and Generous God, it is You who call us by name and ask us to follow You. Help us to grow in the Love and Service of our Church as we experience it today. Give us the energy and courage of Your Spirit to shape its future. Grant us faith-filled leaders who will embrace Christ's Mission of love and justice. Bless the Church of Orange by raising up dedicated and generous leaders from our families and friends who will serve Your people as Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Deacons and Lay Ministers. Inspire us to know You better and open our hearts to hear Your call. We ask this through our Lord. 7
