Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink, ' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?" Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. "I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything." Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you." 2 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him. When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they said to the woman, We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world." (John 4:5-15, 19B-26, 39A, 40-42) The number of rules and social/religious conventions that Jesus destroys this gospel text are almost too innumerable to count. Throwing caution to the wind, he sits with a Samaritan woman. Students of the Old Testament know what happens between women and men at wells. Now, of course, Jesus is not going to marry her, but a bond of truthfulness is formed. She grows to know him for who he is. Her self-hatred, doubts, and rigid rules are washed away in the flowing water of love. Do we allow the same thing to happen within us? 55 & Better 55 & Better is a parish social ministry for parishioners 55 & over. Social activities are held in the SFS Parish Center. 6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon The Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs. They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. The seven Corporal Works of Mercy are listed below. FEED THE HUNGRY There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Donate to a Thanksgiving or Christmas food drive so everyone can have something to eat. Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry. The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen. Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing fewer groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need. GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTY Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource. We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g., soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families. Do the same for youth and young adult groups. Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought. SHELTER THE HOMELESS There are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face. See if your parish or diocese is involved with a local homeless shelter and volunteer some time. Donate time or money to organizations that build homes for those who need shelter. Many homeless shelters need warm blankets for their beds. If you can knit or sew that would be an extra loving gift. There are millions of children and families who are on the move, fleeing from war, illness, hunger and impossible living conditions, and searching for peace and safety. Engage parish groups of children, youth, young adults, and families in doing some research on the causes and challenges that these families face to survive. Contact Catholic Social Services, or diocesan offices of peace and justice for help with your research. Seek ways to provide shelter for the homeless locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. VISIT THE SICK Those who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them. Give blood. Spend time volunteering at a nursing home Get creative and make use of your talents (e.g. sing, read, paint, call Bingo, etc.)! Take time on a Saturday to stop and visit with an elderly neighbor. Offer to assist caregivers of chronically sick family members on a one-time or periodic basis. Give caregivers time off from their caregiving responsibilities so they can rest, complete personal chores, or enjoy a relaxing break. Next time you make a meal that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and give it to a family in your parish who has a sick loved one. VISIT THE PRISONERS People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ. See if your parish, or a nearby parish, has a prison ministry and if so, get involved. Volunteer to help out or donate to charities that give Christmas presents to children whose parents are in prison. BURY THE DEAD Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn. Send a card to someone who has recently lost a loved one. Visit the cemetery and pray for those you have lost. Spend time planning your own funeral Mass; read through the Order of Christian Funerals and find our hope in the Resurrection. 6

7 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon, continued GIVE ALMS TO THE POOR Donate money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. Do research and find organizations that put people in need first, rather than profit. Skip the morning latte and put that money in the collection basket at church. Find a charity that is meaningful to you and volunteer your time or donate. This Lent, give up eating out at restaurants. Pack you meals and donate the extra money to charities. Lent has begun Lent offers us the opportunity to prepare for the celebration of Easter, to walk with the catechumens preparing for the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation and for those of us who are baptized to prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises through penitential practices. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit." Bishop Vann calls Catholics in the Diocese of Orange to observe these Lenten penitential practices: Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. No Catholic will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed. Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. a. On these two days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. b. Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. We invite you as a parishioner of San Francisco Solano parish to have a life-changing Lent: Lent is a time when you might choose to do more than the minimum to choose something that will help you grow spiritually through attending daily Mass, adding some time for prayer or doing other spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Sign up for Best Lent Ever at BestLentEver.com and receive a daily from Matthew Kelly, author of Resisting Happiness. He will provide a brief inspirational video and a practical tip for spiritual growth. There s also a Study Guide for more reflection. Matthew s encouragement is Don t Give Up Chocolate For Lent! Spend some time each Friday of Lent with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. We will have Eucharistic Adoration each Friday beginning after the 8:30 AM Mass and concluding before the evening Soup Supper and Stations of the Cross. Join 40 Days for Life: This prayerful, peaceful pro-life campaign has touched many lives and saved thousands of lives from abortion. You can pray and fast for the 40 Days of Lent with others for this intent. You can join a peaceful vigil at an abortion facility near us see the posters on our bulletin board any day between 7 AM and 7 PM. You can join in bringing the Church s positive pro-life message to your corner of our world. Pray at your Family Dinner Table each night: Take a table-top Lenten Prayers for Hungry People provided by Bread for the World and add your prayer and action at home to your Lenten growth in faithful living. 7
