Epiphany is a Greek word meaning to be manifest upon (Earth). It was a star, a natural object, which guided the Magi to Jesus. Its natural light pointed to and shone on a supernatural reality. From their dialogue with Herod, it is clear they had insight into who Jesus was even before they left home. Indeed, it was because of who (and what) Jesus is, that they undertook the journey. It was a pilgrimage to pay homage to the King of Jews, who is more than simply another earthly king. There are many theories about the gifts of the wise men. Some trace the identity of three gifts to a commonly known story (at the time!) of a Syrian king who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to Apollo s temple at Miletus in Greece in 234 B.C. They are also highly charged with meaning. Gold is for kings, symbolizing their authority. It is also a symbol of virtue. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11) Frankincense is for priests, burned as a fragrant offering symbolizing their mediatory role between the divine and the human. Thus, it can also symbolize prayer itself. Behold the Lamb of God! (John 1:29, 36) Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God (Hebrews 4:14) Myrrh is more problematic, but in some sense is the most telling gift of the three. It was one the Syrian king s gifts to Apollo. It was a fragrant additive to anointing oils (as was frankincense, for non-sacral uses). The most common use for myrrh-scented oil in Palestine was as burial oil, used to anoint a dead body. In commenting on the gifts, Venerable Fulton Sheen suggested in his typical, over the top Irish manner, that to bring myrrh to a baby in 1st century Palestine would be equivalent to bringing a bottle of embalming fluid to a baby shower today. It is, then, a symbol of suffering and death. The shadow of the Cross reaches even here, to the beginning of Jesus earthly life! A first century Jew or even a Gentile would not have a problem accepting the idea of a messiah, a savior, as a priest and king. The combination would be somewhat novel, but would present no major hurdle. St. Paul puts his finger of crux of the problem of a suffering savior, we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:23-24) The radical claim of Christianity is that God-incarnate, Jesus, used an ignominious and torturous death to accomplish salvation. Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (Romans 6:4-5) In other words, God chose to conquer sin and death from the inside, experiencing their effects in the very way that we do!

In January and February, we have set aside these dinners to support the St. Mary's College High School Immersion Program. 7 Morning Mass Time Report The time of the weekday, morning Mass was discussed at the Parish Council meeting on Thursday, December 17th. The Council reviewed and discussed all of feedback that they and I received. Most people supported the rationale behind the experiment: to make daily Mass available to more parishioners, especially school parents. It was clear to all that the change of time did not, on the whole, increase the number of people at that Mass. So effective Monday, December 21st, the weekday and Saturday morning Mass time will return to 8:00 a.m.. Sincere thanks again to everyone who took the time give feedback. -Fr.
