Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father." (Matthew 10: 26-33) In this reading, Jesus is sending the disciples on a mission with a rather ominous expectation do not be afraid implies there is a reason to be fearful. Jesus vocation is not without peril or danger. We speak of the new evangelization with high hopes. What if the message is not received? What happens if friends and coworkers ignore the gospel? Jesus says that will happen. If guaranteed success is our goal, then evangelization is not for us. So what does a disciple do? Preach anyway. Preaching is accomplished not only by words, but most importantly by example. Preaching by word and example is hard. Hard because we are afraid to risk mockery and embarrassment by our family, friends, and coworkers. You may also make a donation online at psa2017-donation/ Goal - $165,000 Pledges Total Pledges - $127, Monthly Adoration The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ and He calls us to spend time with Him in prayer and adoration. Each month, we have a 24-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We encourage you to consider spending some time with Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Morning, afternoon, and evening time slots are available. Our next 24-hour adoration is July 3-4 As Jesus said to his apostles who slept while he prayed in the Garden prior to his arrest and crucifixion, Could you not spend one hour with me? Altar Server Ministry We are happy to announce that a preparatory session for new Altar Servers and one parent is scheduled for the following Sundays: July 30, August 6 and August 13. Students must be at least 10 years old and be available to serve once per year at the Saturday, 5:00 PM and Sunday 7:00 AM and 12:00 NOON Masses. The entire first half of Mass is the liturgy of the Word, with a homily applying the weekly scriptures to our lives. Yet, how many of us have actually read and studied the Bible and know what s in it? San Francisco Solano s Evening Bible Study is a multi-year course: The Bible Plain and Simple. Our mission is to discover the Bible systematically, verse-by-verse, Genesis through Revelation, utilizing a combination of audio and video taught by renowned literary scholar, Dr. Bill Creasy who has been called a Catholic Bible teacher extraordinaire! We are finishing up our study of Luke in June and will begin Acts of the Apostles on Monday, July 17, and Thursday, July 20. In July, all attendees will need to register for our study of Acts of the Apostles at the Logos Bible Study link found on the SFS parish website link. 5 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon Photos of this priest s martyrdom were meant to dissuade Catholics; that s not what happened. The Cristero War was the result of the brutal anti-catholic persecution perpetrated by the Mexican government of the early 20th century. Among the great testimonies of faith from this epoch we find the well-known martyrdom of the Jesuit priest, Miguel Agustín Pro, who was shot without any trial, simply for the crime of being Catholic. In addition to assassinating him, the government wanted to ensure that his execution would humiliate him and that it would serve to dissuade, discourage and frighten other Catholics. They did not expect that his martyrdom would in fact have just the opposite effect. Of the martyrs of those days, no one caught the attention of the public in Mexico and the rest of the world as much as the Jesuit Miguel Agustín Pro. Pro was killed by a firing squad in front of news cameras that the government had brought in to record what it hoped would be the embarrassing spectacle of a priest pleading for mercy. It was one of the first modern attempts to use media images to manipulate public opinion for antireligious purposes. But instead of wavering, Pro displayed great dignity. He walked out to the execution bravely, asking only to be allowed to pray before dying. After a few minutes, he stood up, extended his arms in the form of a cross, a traditional Mexican posture in prayer, and with a steady voice, neither defiant nor desperate, movingly intoned words that have since become famous, Viva Cristo Rey, Long live Christ the King. Far from being a propaganda triumph for the government, the photographs of Pro s execution became objects of Catholic devotion in Mexico and of government embarrassment throughout the world. Officials tried to suppress their circulation, declaring the mere possession of the photos a treasonous act, but without success.. (The Catholic Martyrs of The Twentieth Century, Robert Royal, pp ). Father Miguel Pro, already a prisoner, in Nov. 1927, on the eve of his execution. He was dressed in civilian clothes due to the law prohibiting priests to wear clerics. Condemned to death without a trial, Father Pro proceeded to the place of his execution, carrying a crucifix and a rosary. Father Pro s last request was to be allowed to kneel and pray. The executioner awaits as he kisses the crucifix and prays. With his arms extended as if on a cross, Father Pro prayed for those who were to execute him: My God, have mercy on them. My God, bless them. Lord, you know that I am innocent. With all of my heart, I forgive my enemies. As the executioner readied to fire, Father Pro s last words were powerful: Viva Cristo Rey! (Long live Christ the King!) This became the motto for the Cristeros, such that in subsequent executions, martyrs tongues were cut out so that they could not profess Christ with this cry at the moment of death. Now wounded, Father Pro falls to the ground and is given the coup de grâce. Many Mexicans took the great risk not only of participating in the burial of Father Pro, but of crying out Viva Cristo Rey as his remains passed by. 5

British Soccer Camp at Cornelia Connelly School Cornelia Connelly School will be the host campus for a prestigious, one-week British Soccer Camp this summer! This group is for patients and families/friends, over the age of 18, who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder or Major Depressive Disorder and are under the care of a psychiatrist or physician.
