Proverbs 22:9 3 The Catholic Church believes that our celebration of the Eucharist, the Mass, is the source and the summit of our faith. It is at the heart of our life of faith. As Catholics, we proclaim our belief that the bread and wine consecrated during Mass become Christ Himself--His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity- Holy Communion. We do not believe it is just a symbol. Once consecrated, it is not merely a cracker, a piece of bread or a cup of wine. With eyes of faith we see the Body and Blood of Christ. We meet Jesus present sacramentally. Our spiritual life is not limited solely to participation in the Mass. Pope Saint John Paul II called worship of the Most Holy Eucharist outside of Mass an important daily practice that becomes an inexhaustible source of holiness and a practice of inestimable value for the life of the Church. Beginning in September, we will have Eucharistic Adoration with Exposition every Friday of the month right after morning Mass. On the First Friday, Adoration will take place from 9:00 AM concluding at 9:00 PM. All other Fridays of the month, Adoration will take place from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. As the morning Mass ends, the Blessed Sacrament is placed in a beautiful stand known as a monstrance, and Jesus Christ is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament for all to see. Exposition will take place on the main altar of the church. We must have committed worshippers who follow an hourly schedule for visiting Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to ensure that the Eucharist is never without veneration. We will be taking sign-ups for committed adorers on the weekend of August 25/26 in the courtyard after every Mass. We will also have an electronic sign-up on the parish website: Please prayerfully consider your availability to come to Adoration and spend time with Christ. Everyone is welcome to come spend time in the presence of Christ for as short or as long a time as you like. Come adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament even if you are not a scheduled adorer. Any time you spend with Him is transforming. For more information, contact Maura Mo Byron at 5byrons@cox.net or call The San Francisco Solano Monday/Thursday evening Bible study groups will resume after Labor Day. Thursday meetings will resume Sept. 6. Monday meetings will resume Sept. 10 For information, Joni Marques at jonimmarques@gmail.com.

7 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Pope Francis Changes Catholic Teaching on Death Penalty In the current edition of the catechism, the teaching on the death penalty reads: 2267 Assuming that the guilty party s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically nonexistent. But the new draft by Pope Francis (which you can read below) removes any absolute necessity, along with any conditions that might allow recourse to the death penalty. It casts the Church s historic teaching on the death penalty in the past tense, and declares now that in all circumstances, for all crimes, the death penalty is inadmissible. Pope Francis has changed the Catholic Church s teaching on the death penalty, concluding it is always wrong as it attacks human dignity. The Vatican announced that Pope Francis had changed the catechism of the church the compilation of official Catholic teaching. Previously, the catechism said the church didn t exclude recourse to capital punishment if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. The new teaching says the previous policy is outdated and that there are other ways to protect society. From the Vatican website: The death penalty Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good. Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption. Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person, [1] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide. 7
