2 Letter from the Pastor Come to Me. Find Rest. D ear Friends, Today s Scripture underscores Jesus as peaceable, humble, and gentle. Jesus stands against a violent, arrogant, competitive, and harsh way of living. Don t we encounter aggressiveness (think of freeway driving!), arrogance (think of inordinate demands/expectations), and harshness no matter which way we turn? Aren t we weary of a world, hell-bent on violence and destruction? Do we enter into that which stands against life, or are we an antidote to the violence and hardness of spirit? If we live close to the Lord Jesus, we become peaceable, humble, and gentle in spirit, as the Lord is. And we share others sorrows, lessening their burdens, and increasing their hope. Come to me. Find rest. They replied, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter said in reply, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said to him in reply, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (MT 16:13-19) Today the church honors two of her greatest saints: "Peter, foremost in confessing the faith, Paul its outstanding preacher, Peter who established the early church from the remnant of Israel. Paul master and teacher of the Gentiles." as today's Preface describes them. Peter and Paul were not paragons of perfection. They were very human. Peter denied three times that he knew Jesus; and Paul started out as a persecutor of the faith. Perhaps Jesus chose them because He knew that those who are aware of their own weaknesses are more patient with the weaknesses of others, and those who have been forgiven are more forgiving. 3 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 7 July 8:30 AM Brian Campbell Tuesday 8 July 8:30 AM Reginaldo Punsalan Wednesday 9 July 8:30 AM Jane Haas Thursday 10 July 8:30 AM Special Intention 8:30 AM Friday, 11 July Mike Murphy Saturday, 12 July 5:00 PM Frances Petromilli Sunday 13 July 7:00 AM PRO POPULO 8:30 AM Margie Hatting 10:15 AM Maxima Limitiaco 12:00 NOON Julio Sanorjo 5:00 PM Eleanor Laughlin SFS Women s Spanish Prayer Group We invite you to come and join us for worshipping, prayer, scripture, and meditation and thanksgiving with other women every other Thursday at 11:00 am in the Perez home. 5 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith The Sacraments of Healing We recognize that the Sacraments have a visible and invisible reality, a reality open to all the human senses but grasped in its God-given depths with the eyes of faith. When parents hug their children, for example, the visible reality we see is the hug. The invisible reality the hug conveys is love. We cannot "see" the love the hug expresses, though sometimes we can see its nurturing effect in the child. The visible reality we see in the Sacraments is their outward expression, the form they take, and the way in which they are administered and received. The invisible reality we cannot "see" is God's grace, his gracious initiative in redeeming us through the death and Resurrection of his Son. His initiative is called grace because it is the free and loving gift by which he offers people a share in his life, and shows us his favor and will for our salvation. Our response to the grace of God's initiative is itself a grace or gift from God by which we can imitate Christ in our daily lives. (USCCB) RECONCILIATION The Sacrament of Penance or Reconcilation is an experience of the gift of God's boundless mercy. Not only does it free us from our sins but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. We are liberated to be forgivers. We obtain new insight into the words of the Prayer of St. Francis: "It is in pardoning that we are pardoned." Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance is God's gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins. With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. The Sacrament helps us stay close to the truth that we cannot live without God. "In him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). While all the Sacraments bring us an experience of the mercy that comes from Christ's dying and rising, it is the Sacrament of Reconciliation that is the unique Sacrament of mercy. -From the US Catholic Catechism for Adults ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person's condition becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Moreover, "old people may be anointed if they are in weak condition even though no dangerous illness is present. Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be comforted by this sacrament.... [The faithful] should be encouraged to ask for the anointing, and, as soon as the time for the anointing comes, to receive it with faith and devotion, not misusing the sacrament by putting it off" (Rite of Anointing, nos. 11, 12, 13). Only bishops and priests may be ministers of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. A penitential rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word opens the celebration. Scripture awakens the faith of the sick and family members and friends to pray to Christ for the strength of his Holy Spirit. The priest lays his hands on the head of the sick person. He then proceeds to anoint, with the blessed Oil of the Sick, the forehead and hands of the sick person (in the Roman Rite). He accompanies these acts with the words, "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up" (CCC, no. 1513). For those who are about to depart from this life, the Church offers the person Penance, Anointing of the Sick, and the Eucharist as Viaticum (food for the journey) given at the end of life. These are "the sacraments that prepare for our heavenly homeland" (cf. CCC, no. 1525). These rites are highly valued by Catholics as powerful aids to a good death. Since Holy Communion is the effective sign of Christ's Paschal Mystery, it becomes for the recipient the opportunity to unite one's own suffering and dying to that of Christ with the hope of life eternal with him. The special words proper to Viaticum are added: "May the Lord Jesus protect you and lead you to everlasting life. Amen."
