Jesus said to them in reply, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! And he told them this parable: There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil? He said to him in reply, Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down. (Luke 13: 1-9) In today's first reading from Exodus we hear the story of God calling Moses from the burning bush. We, like Moses, sometimes need a divine ploy to be stopped in our tracks. What is the "burning bush" God is using to get your attention this Lent? Perhaps conversion is more about waking up and less about focusing on sins or mistakes. Clearly, Jesus thought so. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus tells us that God is like the gardener who provides expert care and nourishment for an ailing fruit tree, then waits for it to respond to a fresh opportunity for new growth. This is our season to come alive again and bear fruit! 2 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 29 February 8:30 AM Jean Marie Hessmer Nena Lim Chris Morrow Tuesday 1 March 8:30 AM Rodolfo Ubay-Ubay Asuncion Enerlan Nancy Bruno Wednesday 2 March 8:30 AM Jose Anson Efren Payumo Terrible Earl Wenger 26 th Birthday Thursday 3 March 8:30 AM Justice Antonin Scalia Thomas Stack Friday 4 March 8:30 AM 55 & BETTER Tranquilino and Teodora Cordova Saturday, 5 March 8:30 AM Pacita Valentin 5:00 PM Martha Limon Sunday 6 March 7:00 AM Jorge Camacho 8:30 AM Jorge Camacho 10:15 AM Christina Filoia 12:00 NOON PRO POPULO 5:00 PM Elizabeth Lowe In Memoriam Let us pray for all those who have died, especially Austin Boyd son of Nancy and Chris Boyd Dr. Stephen Jeckovich husband of Catherine Jeckovich Joan Mooney Save the Date San Francisco Solano s semi-annual Blood Drive will be held TODAY, Sunday, February 28, from 8 AM until 2 PM in the basement of the Youth Faith Formation building. 6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon The Scrutinies The Gospels of today and for the next two Sundays are called the Scrutinies and are celebrated to teach the Elect, i.e., those who are going through the RCIA and will receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil, about the mystery of sin and fill them with the spirit of Christ. The Scrutinies are described by the Church as "rites for self-searching, and repentance, which are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect; to bring out, and then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the Elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the Elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all" The First Scrutiny The Third Sunday of Lent The Woman at the Well. The primary symbol in the reading of today's gospel is water. Water is a symbol of life, and it indicates that God wishes to give us life, as shown in the stories of the Israelites in the desert and the Samaritan woman at the well. The symbol of water also indicates baptism and looks forward to Easter when the baptism of the elect will be celebrated. This story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well tells us of a remarkable meeting. Jesus asks her for some water, but offers her living water, promising eternal life. As the woman talks to Jesus, her life is revealed to her. This does not result in scorn or condemnation, but healing, forgiveness, and new life. She sees the truth about herself and sees God face to face. Such a meeting, in sincerity and truth, is not to be feared but welcomed, because of the new life and freedom from the burdens of the past which it brings. The Second Scrutiny Fourth Sunday Of Lent The Man Born Blind. The key idea in the story of the man born blind, the fourth Sunday of Lent s Gospel is turning from darkness to light, as symbolized in this man's healing. For example, an examination of conscience, especially in the light of God's word, leads to enlightenment, and thus enables people to do as St. Paul says, "Try to discover what the Lord wants of you, having nothing to do with the futile works of darkness." This story does not end with the blind man's healing, but rather continues with arguments about what really happened and who Jesus is. The foundation of the story is two-fold, a miracle story in which blindness is cured and in Jesus saying, "I am the light of the world." This miracle is a sign of the truth of the same and the judging effect of the light. Christ is "The Light of the World." And we look to him for the truth. We need to understand the world, ourselves, and God. Third Scrutiny Fifth Sunday of Lent The Raising Of Lazarus The third Scrutiny emphasizes Christ as "the Resurrection and the Life" as we hear in this Gospel about the raising of Lazarus back to life. The raising of Lazarus is an anticipation of what is to take place on the last day. It means that the believer has eternal life and has passed from death to life. The name Lazarus means "God helps." The raising of Lazarus is not a piece of magic. It is an anticipation of what is to take place on the last day. The movement from death to life is the pattern experienced by all Christians, who have already died to sin and risen again in Christ, and all will be fulfilled on the last day. SJSCS Lenten Retreat Please join St. Junipero Serra Catholic School for a beautiful morning of faith and friendship at their 2016 Lenten Retreat on Monday, March 7, from 9:15 AM-12:00 NOON.
