While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have." And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things." (Luke 24:35-48) Even at this point, the apostles obviously do not have faith. Thus, they could not have realized the fact of the resurrection, and at first regard the risen Lord as a ghost. In order to convince them of his reality, Jesus lets them touch his hands and feet and eats in their presence. There is one essential lesson here: the resurrection is a real fact, not some sort of spiritual survival. The physical body, as well as the soul, is resurrected. The resurrection provides the key to all cosmic and all human hope. In Jesus Christ every man is called to share in the divine son ship, and cooperate in the building of the kingdom. 2 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 16 April 8:30 AM Meleny Gules Josip & Ruzica Fizulic Tuesday 17 April 8:30 AM Miyana Gules Dragica & Suetka Tanta Wednesday 18 April 8:30 AM Jim Gentile Michael Avilla Thursday 19 April 8:30 AM Tecla Sanchez (L) Pavica Angela Fizulic (d) Friday 20 April 8:30 AM Virginia Isherwood (d) Tom Murphy (L) Saturday 21 April 8:30 AM Domingo M. 5 Parish Ministries Children of Christ s Heart Children of Christ s Heart is partnering with Family Support Network of Orange County to facilitate a Parent-to-Parent Support Group meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. The group is intended for anyone offering care and support for a child or young adult with special needs. In addition to a spiritually based, emotionally supportive environment, we will offer presentations on topics of interest and assistance with IEPs, Regional Center, California Children s Services and CalOptima. Child care is not provided, but you are welcome to bring your child with you if you provide the supervision. For more information, please contact Maura Byron at (949) or via at 5byrons@cox.net. Baptism Ministry Needs Volunteers The Baptism Ministry is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping prepare parents for the baptism of their children, your help would be appreciated. The key quality needed for the Baptism Ministry is a welcoming personality, as we are often one of the first contacts families have with the parish. The time commitment associated with this ministry is small. Currently, five couples share responsibility for small group gatherings at the church (2 times per year) and assist at Sunday baptism celebrations in the parish (2 times per year). If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Aaron and Lori Harp at or loriharp1@cox.net. Save the Date! Fiesta de Solano 2018 July 20, 21, and 22 Fiesta Commi ee volunteers are needed. Please contact Jeff and Tamie Kosidowski at Fiesta.de.Solano89@gmail.com Women s Circle A new season of Women's Circle of Faith & Friendship has begun. All women of the parish are invited to explore this program, which has been described as a spa for your soul. Women's Circle is a peer ministry for women of all ages and stages of life, offering an opportunity to nurture our spirituality, deepen our faith, and build community. This season we will be using a wonderful new resource by Liz Curtis Higgs. The Women of Easter: Encounter the Savior with Mary of Bethany, Mary of Nazareth, and Mary Magdalene. Take time this Lenten Season to experience Easter through the eyes of three women named Mary each of whom had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. Your mind and emotions will be engaged and your faith strengthened as each scene unfolds, preparing your heart for a richer, deeper experience of Lent and Easter. This session will run through Tuesday, May 1. Meetings will be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday mornings (9:30-11:30 AM) and evenings (6-8 PM). There is a $20.00 registration fee which includes the book and other resources. For additional information please Lori LaFavre at lori@lclafavre.com. 5

7 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith We need to talk: Why children need to hear from the church about abuse prevention April is child Abuse Protection Month. Below comes from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops: In the years since the first Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, there has been much debate about the education of children in abuse prevention and personal safety. The debate looks at whether or not education by the Church contributes significantly to the safety, well-being, and spiritual growth of our children. What does education by the Church uniquely contribute to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of our children? Differentiation of human failings from the message of Christ and the Church Sexual abuse can have a devastating effect on the spiritual development of children. When abuse occurs in a setting or at the hands of an individual not associated with the Church, it often raises questions about God's love or even God's existence. If an individual who abuses represents the Church, the impact becomes more devastating to children's spiritual development. Given the nature of children's thoughts, it is often difficult for youngsters to separate the actions of a fallible human being from the message and the institution that they represent. Children need to hear consistent messages that they are deserving of dignity and respect; that God and the Church want them to be safe and involved in right relationships; that we want to help them if a relationship isn't right. Such messages can help children retain their faith in the face of disappointing or even devastating behavior of an adult. Increased Resiliency One of the most damaging aspects of sexual abuse is the destruction it causes in how children interpret relationships. When a trusted adult uses a relationship with a child for selfish means, it challenges a child's interpretation of the meaning of relationships. The more adults they encounter who model right relationships, the less likely they are to generalize their experience of abuse. As a Church we have the opportunity to be the face of God in a relationship that models the Gospel message of Christ. Communicating to children as Church helps to build safe, stable, nurturing relationships with adults, building children's resiliency in the face of adversity. Children who are victimized by sexual abuse have been found to experience better outcomes as adults if their disclosure of abuse is met with a supportive and protective response from an adult. Communicating as Church helps our children to be confident that all of the significant adults in their lives will respond with the same support and protection. Breaking Down the Barrier of Silence Often there are barriers to keep children from disclosing abuse. The child victim likely has been held to secrecy by the perpetrator. Children may fear the consequences of reporting fearful that they will be in trouble or that the perpetrator (whom they may care greatly about) may be in trouble, that their family will be devastated, that they will not be believed, that they will be rejected. Silence or failure to communicate about abuse gives the message that abuse is something that is not to be spoken about. One achievement attained in communicating to children as Church is breaking that silence. Children need to hear from the Church that we want them to report abuse even if the perpetrator is one of our own. They need to hear that we, as Church, want them to be respected and protected, and that we will take actions to keep them safe. If we can support children in reporting warning signs or indicators that a relationship isn't right, we have the opportunity to monitor, problem solve, and address concerns before an abusive relationship progresses to the point of physical harm or significant emotional injury. What You Can Do Find Out More Contact your Diocese or Parish office to find out more about the Abuse Prevention Education and Comprehensive Safe Environment Program and training provided in your diocese. Become Involved Participate in your diocese or parish Safe Environment Program. A key aspect of such programs is providing adequate supervision of children and educating adults to be aware of the signs of abuse and what to do in response. The Office of Child and Youth Protection supports the Bishop s commitment to create a safe environment throughout our parishes and schools so that children and youth are free to worship and learn without the threat of harm through the implementation of safeguards which protect the most vulnerable and aids in healing those who have been harmed in the past. REPORTING ABUSE If you have been a victim of sexual abuse by clergy or a church representative, please call the Diocesan Toll Free Reporting Line,
