He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. (Mark 1:12-15) Three inseparable events in the life of Jesus, revealed in part by today's Gospel, are His baptism in the River Jordan, His prayer and temptation in the desert, and the inauguration of His ministry in Galilee. In God's plan, Jesus's ministry cannot begin without His reception of the divine mandate ("You are My beloved son") and a time of incorporating this mandate into His life (prayer & temptation). Ministry that is about the other and not about ourselves must be rooted in a heart that knows temptations, that knows the sacrifices that are necessary in service, and trusts wholeheartedly in the God who fashioned us as His own. The Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving give us plenty of opportunity to experience temptation. We must see temptation as part of our call, as part of the preparation that pushes us forward in ministry. 2 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 23 February 8:30 AM John Fontana John Laughlin Tuesday 24 Februray 8:30 AM Gloria Dunne Wednesday 25 February 8:30 AM Daniel Bosack Special Intention Thursday 26 February 8:30 AM Alice Reilly Friday 27 February 8:30 AM Roger Kirk Saturday 28 February 5:00 PM Levi Reynolds Evelyn Gorrindo Sunday 1 March 7:00 AM Nancy Bruno 8:30 AM Domingo Ho Chau 10:15AM Ernesto David Alonzo 12:00 NOON PRO POPULO 5:00 PM Sister Anne Mary Dooley, SSJ Schedule of Church Hours *Winter Schedule* Monday Thursday 6:30 AM 8:30 PM Friday 6:30 AM 3:00 PM Saturday 10:00 AM 6:30 PM Sunday 6:30 AM 6:30 PM Offertory Collection Offertory Summary Last Year Current Year Incr/ (Decr) % 1/11/2015 $25,071 $22,695 -$2,376-9% 1/18/2015 $25,731 $22,775 -$2,956-11% 1/25/2015 $28,124 $22,339 -$5,785-21% 2/1/2015 $28,101 $23,688 -$4,413-16% 2/8/2015 $32,350 $24,747 -$7,603-24% Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus with Deacon Doug October 1-10, 2015 Tiberias * Nazareth * Bethlehem * Jerusalem For Information contact Carre Wertepny at or mba4carre1@yahoo.com

6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon Marriage and Family (Part 2) A Communion of Love The Christian married couple, with their children, form an image of the Trinitarian God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Marriage and family life images the Trinity in two ways. First, like the Trinity, marriage is a communion of love between co-equal persons, beginning with husband and wife and extending to all the members of the family. Second, just as Trinity s love is life-giving, a married couple s love conceives and cares for children. In addition to reflecting the Trinity, the family is a microcosm of the Church. The ancient expression domestic church accurately describes the family because it is a small communion of persons that draws its sustenance from the larger Church and reflects its life in unique ways. Within this domestic church, parents have a special responsibility to teach children the faith and help them to grow in virtue. The family matures as a domestic church by participating in the life and worship of the larger Church, especially Sunday Eucharist. In the Eucharist, members of the family are most fully united to Christ, to one another, and to their brothers and sisters throughout the world. Christian spouses in a mixed marriage (between a Catholic and a baptized person who is not Catholic) witness to the universality of God s love, even without sharing the Eucharist. They can make an important contribution towards Christian unity. Sometimes, Catholics marry non-christians. These marriages are not sacramental, although the parties do commit to fidelity, permanence, and openness to children. Both types of unions face particular challenges, especially the religious upbringing of children. The Catholic party needs to take seriously the promise to maintain his or her Catholic faith and to do all in his or her power to have the children baptized and raised Catholic. Marriage is a vocation, or divine call, as necessary and valuable to the Church as other vocations. Discernment of and preparation for marriage is a process that begins early in life and continues through the engagement period. Because marriage is for the good of the Church and the entire community, the Church and the state have an obligation to help support and sustain marriage. Growth in Virtue With God s grace, couples are called to grow in holiness. A holy marriage is made up of many virtues. Fundamentally, the couple lives out the theological virtues of faith, hope and love. Love is the heart of the vocation of marriage. It calls spouses to imitate Jesus by their willingness to sacrifice themselves in everyday situations for each other and their children. Couples must also grow in the moral virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. Two virtues that are sometimes overlooked are chastity and gratitude. Marital chastity means that the couple s love is total, faithful, exclusive and open to life. It protects a great good: the communion of persons and the procreative purpose of marriage. Marriage is a school of gratitude, in which husband and wife are thankful for the gift of each other. They express their joyous gratitude in giving themselves completely to each other. Their gratitude leads them to be open to children and to be generous towards others. Growth in virtue is a lifelong journey, in which the spouses become more like Christ so that they can more perfectly love each other as Christ loves his Church. The Eucharist In the Eucharist Catholic couples meet Christ, the source of their marriage. This encounter moves them to reach out in love to the broader Church and to the world. The Eucharist nourishes the virtue of marital hospitality and helps the couple to recognize God s image in others. This hospitality builds up the Church and makes it a stronger witness to Christ s love in the world. A marriage that is truly in Christ is a sign of the Kingdom that is coming. At the end of time, at the celebration of the heavenly wedding banquet, the love to which the spouses have been called will find its completion when the entire Church is assumed into the glory of the risen Christ. 6

What are we doing about it? Join Bishop Kevin Vann, Bishop Mar Awa from the Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, and other Christian religious leaders from Orange County on Tuesday evening, March 3, for an Evening Prayer Service in Solidarity with Persecuted Christians. This prayer event will take place from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the Arboretum on the Christ Cathedral Campus, 1380 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove. It is being hosted by the Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Commission of the Diocese of Orange. A reception will follow in the Cultural Center. All are invited to join us! For more information, contact Ecumenical Commission Member Greg Kelley at In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering. Pope Benedict XVI Adoration of Our Lord Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament takes place in our parish on the first Monday of each month for a 24-hour period, following morning Mass and concluding prior to Mass Tuesday morning. We would like to extend this invitation to you to come and spend time with Our Lord. You may come in at any time and just be in His presence. During the Lenten season, what better way to really develop your prayer life other than speaking so directly to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament? Adoration will take place on March 2/3 and on Holy Thursday following the Mass until midnight. You are always welcome to come to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for a quick visit with Our Lord. Without prolonged moments of adoration, of prayerful encounter with the Word, of sincere conversation with the Lord, our work easily becomes meaningless; we lose energy as a result of weariness and difficulties and our fervor dies out. The Church urgently needs the deep breadth of prayer, and to my great joy groups devoted to prayer and intercession, the prayerful reading of God s word and the perpetual adoration of the Eucharist are growing at every level of ecclesial life. Pope Francis Join us in prayer. Reset your life focus and offer Christ some of your time come and be with Him. Could you not spend one hour with me? - Jesus 7
