2 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome November 9, 2014 Letter Letter from from the the Pastor Pastor Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran D ear Friends, Today we celebrate the oldest of Rome s four great basilicas: St. John Lateran. St. John was surnamed Lateran because it stands on the site of the palace of the Laterani family. St. John Lateran is considered the cathedral of Rome and the mother church of Christendom. Today, let us be mindful of the holy places in our lives. Let us also consider how well we have preserved the sanctity of our own temple the temple of our lives. Do persons sense the presence of the Lord within us? Does our way of life reflect the Lord s Spirit within us, a Spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness? Are we inspired, animated, and directed by the Lord s Spirit? Is there a Christ-likeness within us? Do we reverence ourselves as a living temple of God? Do we reverence our brothers and sisters, who are also dwelling places of the living Christ? And as a community of believers, do we offer collective witness of welcome and hospitality to all? Do we offer collective witness of compassion and peace to the world? Does our collective voice speak out for what is right? Does our collective voice speak out to defend the poor and disadvantaged? Does our collective voice pray to God for guidance and perseverance and grace? Sincerely, Father Rudy Preciado Father Rudy Preciado, a recently retired diocesan priest of Orange and former pastor of Saint Anthony Claret Church ( ) in Anaheim, will provide sacramental and pastoral care at San Francisco Solano Church from 1 January 2015 to 30 June Prior to his assignment as Pastor of Saint Anthony Claret Parish, Father Rudy served as pastor at Saint Callistus Church in Garden Grove. With Father Rudy, the parish is in good hands. The parish will find Father Rudy outgoing and friendly and pastorally responsible. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Important Announcement! He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, Take these out of here, and stop making my Father s house a marketplace. His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews said, This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days? But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. (John 2:13-22) Today the church celebrates the dedication the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral church for the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. In celebrating a house of prayer, we are really celebrating the place where God wishes to dwell: the people He calls His own, his living temple, those made in His image and likeness. 3 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 10 November 8:30 AM Don Bowen Tuesday 11 November 8:30 AM Ben Paine Wednesday 12 November 8:30 AM John Vasquez, Jr. Thursday 13 November 8:30 AM Milt Gray Friday 14 November 8:30 AM Mike Dalessio Aurea Samson Saturday, 15 November 5:00 PM Mary Quinn Sunday 16 November 7:00 AM Alfonso Navarro 8:30 AM Florence Rinella 10:15 AM Raymond and Ann Marie Butters 12:00 NOON PRO POPULO 5:00 PM Tom Proferl In Memoriam Let us pray for all those who have died, especially Beverly Ann Handfield Memorial Shrine/Book of Remembrance During the month of November, the Memorial Shrine will be on display to honor our loved ones who have entered into eternal life during this past year. Please contact Frank Nainoa, franknainoa@ .phoenix.edu, if you are interested in participating. All participants must be at least 18 years old. Corazon is an Outreach ministry that serves families in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico. A Parish Core Team coordinates the project, which includes a house building day and a coat and blanket drive. Parishioners participate through donating time and skills on build day, donating blankets and coats during drive, financial support to underwrite the cost of the build, prayer. Reasons for going to Mexico to build a home include: Most families we serve live in shacks that have canvas or cardboard walls and ceilings. Most families we serve live in a Third World environment and are less than 100 miles from South Orange County. The house we build will last, on average, 24 years and will provide shelter for families that currently live in an exposed environment. Most children do not attend school after the second grade due to the cost of the public school ($500 per year). A typical family living in a 300-square-foot shack consists of a mother, father, and three children. Corazon has been building homes in and around Tijuana and Tecate since 1978; they average one home per weekend and have become part of the local community. Still, there is an overwhelming demand for new housing and basic living needs. The 400-square-foot house that we will build will consist of four walls, a floor that is slightly elevated above the ground to keep it dry during the winter Friday Morning Bible Study You're invited to join us Friday mornings from 9:15-11AM for Bible Study. All you need is a Bible, a notebook, and a willing heart. We meet upstairs in the Parish Hall, Room F. Please contact Kathy Pham, or phamily02@cox.net. Catholic Legislative Network Stay Informed! 7 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon A Church That Must Go Out -- Pope Paul's Final Exhortation On October 19, at the close of the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family in Rome, Pope Francis will beatify Pope Paul VI ( ), who oversaw most of the Second Vatican Council and its implementation. This essay was written by Bishop David Ricken the bishop of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and chairman of the U.S. bishops Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis. He Pope Francis has repeatedly spoken of the need for a Church that goes out from itself, bringing mercy to the margins of society. This call is evident in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel), in which he states, An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people s daily lives; it bridges distances, it is willing to abase itself if necessary, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. These words, like much of Pope Francis s thought, draw heavily from Pope Paul VI ( ), whom Pope Francis will beatify, or bring one step closer to being declared a saint, October 19. On December 8, 1975, Pope Paul issued Evangelii Nuntiandi, On Evangelization in the Modern World. This apostolic exhortation was shared with the hope of fostering a new period of evangelization. Pope Francis has called Evangelii Nuntiandi the greatest pastoral document that has ever been written to this day. Evangelii Nuntiandi advanced the call of the Second Vatican Council to become a Church that reaches outside of itself and transforms the world around us (see Decree on the Apostolate of Lay People, 2). Through proclaiming Christ to the world, the Church and those who accept her message will experience a profound change of mind and heart. Paul VI was keenly aware that evangelists had to first be evangelized. The self-righteous, the judgmental, those who feel they are better than others would not bear fruit. Repentant sinners, those who realize they can t live life on their own and need Christ, those willing to listen to others and share their own stories of how Christ has touched their lives those would be the needed witnesses who experience continual conversion. Paul VI also challenges us to see evangelization as more than just a one-on-one encounter, but also the transformation of society and culture. Evangelization calls for a new way of living personally and as a people. The power of the Gospel affects, or as Paul VI states, upsets mankind s criteria of judgment, determining values, points of interest, lines of thought, sources of inspiration and models of life which are in contrast with the Word of God and the plan of salvation. Yet Paul VI realized that even as the Gospel transforms peoples and societies, the conditions of society in which we live oblige all of us therefore to revise methods, to seek by every means to study how we can bring the Christian message to modern man. In other words, the way the Church spreads the Good News is always evolving. This has been evident recently in the calls for new language at the Synod of Bishops in Rome. It s also the case with the many Catholics, bishops, clergy and lay people alike, who have generated a powerful witness through their use of social media, Pope Francis chief among them. The vast and immediate reach of digital technology means today s evangelizers have more tools than ever at their disposal. This is a gift, especially because proclaiming Christ to the world is not optional for the Church. All Christians are called to share the joy of Christ and his Gospel. Bishop Paul Bradley of Kalamazoo, Michigan, recently said on Twitter: It s not that the Church has a mission; rather the Mission, of spreading the Good News of Jesus, has a Church to carry out the mission. Or as Paul VI said, She exists in order to evangelize. Paul VI prayed that evangelization would become our daily preoccupation and a way of life and action." With the Lord Jesus Christ as the center of our lives, may we go forth boldly, sharing the joy of the Gospel with all we meet.
