And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, Isn t this the son of Joseph? He said to them, Surely you will quote me this proverb, Physician, cure yourself, and say, Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum. And he said, Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away. (Luke 4:21-30) Who are today's prophets? Those who are unafraid to speak the inconvenient truths everyone needs to hear. The job description of a prophet always seems to include some pretty stiff rejection. It is not a career one chooses likely but a compelling call requiring dedication and courage. Jeremiah tried to resist and so did Jonah, but to no avail. Jesus, on the other hand, embraced the role out of love, as an integral part of his mission. Paul reminds us that without love, prophecy is only noise. How can we be a prophet s in our world today? 2 Mass Intentions for the Week Monday 1 February 8:30 AM Elias Chaanine Josephine Licha Moussa Rizk Tuesday 2 February 8:30 AM Kevin Mulhere St. Anthony Patrick John Smith George Sanders Wednesday 3 February 8:30 AM Edith Apat Laura and Eric Bauer Thursday 4 February 8:30 AM Richard Aust Sabina Siritaranukol Gregorius Edsamora Abdiputra Friday 5 February 8:30 AM 55 & BETTER Maureen O Neill Saturday, 6 February 8:30 AM Roger Kirk 5:00 PM Pro Populo Sunday 7 February 7:00 AM Regina Ranido 8:30 AM Charly Horn 10:15 AM Milad Gammoh 12:00 NOON Tony Hauck 5:00 PM Elizabeth Lowe Monday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Schedule of Church Hours *Winter Schedule* Altar Server Training 6:30 AM 8:30 PM 6:30 AM 3:00 PM 10:00 AM 6:30 PM 6:30 AM 6:30 PM We are happy to announce that a preparatory session for new Altar Servers and their parents is scheduled for either TODAY, Sunday, January 31, or Sunday, February 28, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. 6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith Letter from the Deacon What the Catholic Church Teaches About the End of Life Medical advances can help save lives. They also can present terminally-ill patients and their loved ones with difficult choices at the end of life. Catholic teaching gives patients and their families principles for making decisions about initiating or continuing medical treatments. But normally one is held to use only ordinary means according to the circumstances of persons, places, times, and culture that is to say, means that do not involve any grave burden for oneself or another. (Pope Pius XII) Ordinary and Extraordinary Treatments that offer reasonable hope of benefit that may be obtained without excessive pain, expense or burden are considered ordinary means. Treatments that do not offer reasonable hope of benefit and cannot be obtained without excessive pain, expense or burden are considered extraordinary means. Respecting the sacredness of life, each person decides the benefits and burdens of treatment according to their own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health at the time of the decision. When confronted with highly emotional life-and-death decisions, Catholics should gather all the facts, consult with their physician and family, reflect on Catholic teaching, and pray. We are called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of our earthly existence because it consists in sharing the very life of God. (Pope John Paul II. Evangelium Vitae) Q. Does the Church require Catholics to pursue all efforts to preserve life? A. No. Human life is a gift from God and we have a duty to preserve it. But we enter into eternal life through death, and the Church teaches that treatments or procedures may be refused if they offer little or no benefit and cause undue burden. Catholic Teaching on Assisted Suicide Because all life is sacred, Catholic teaching holds that assisted suicide can never be permitted. Euthanasia and assisted suicide stand in contradiction to the Catholic understanding that all life bears God s image and has inherent dignity. Allowing to Die vs. Killing - Killing is an intentional act that causes death, while allowing to die is withholding or withdrawing futile or burdensome treatments. Making Good Decisions at the End of Life Dying is one of the most important moments in our lives. Like all important moments, it deserves thoughtful preparation. (Father Lawrence Reilly, Ethicist and Theologian) Q. What s the difference between withholding treatment and assisted suicide? A. Assisted suicide is the intentional taking of life and is never permissible. Withholding extraordinary means off medical treatment is morally permissible, allowing nature to take its course and death to occur naturally. The Church encourages all Catholics to prayerfully reflect on death and to prepare for it responsibly. This may include preparing a living will and durable power of attorney for health care to make their wishes known. All Catholics are strongly encouraged to make their desires known to their family, friends and doctor regarding initiating or continuing life-sustaining procedures in the event of a terminal condition. Catholics also are encouraged to give power of attorney for health care to someone they trust who can make health care decisions for them, if they are unable to do so for themselves. 6

7 Parish Ministries Eucharistic Adoration The Catholic Church believes that our celebration of the Eucharist, the Mass, is the source and the summit of our faith. It is at the heart of our life of faith. As Catholics, we proclaim our belief that the bread and wine consecrated during Mass become Christ Himself His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity Holy Communion. We do not believe it is just a symbol. Once consecrated, it is not merely a cracker, a piece of bread or a cup of wine. With eyes of faith we see the Body and Blood of Christ. We meet Jesus present sacramentally. The Mass is the focal point that brings us together as a worshiping community and we are nourished with the Word of the Scriptures and with Holy Communion. After being consecrated and distributed at Mass as Holy Communion, the Sacred Hosts are placed in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. There, a candle signals the constant presence of Christ. This holy place is open whenever the church is open and Jesus waits for visitors. Come visit Him often! But our spiritual life is not limited solely to participation in the Mass. Pope Saint John Paul II called worship of the Most Holy Eucharist outside of Mass an important daily practice that becomes an inexhaustible source of holiness and a practice of inestimable value for the life of the Church. On the first Monday of every month at our parish we have Eucharistic Adoration with Exposition. As the morning Mass ends, the Blessed Sacrament is placed in a beautiful stand known as a monstrance and Jesus Christ is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament for all to see. We have committed worshippers who follow an hourly schedule for visiting Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to ensure that the Eucharist is never without veneration. Exposition concludes 24 hours later, just prior to morning Mass on Tuesday. Everyone is welcome to come spend time in the presence of Christ for as short or as long a time as you like. Come adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament even if you are not a scheduled adorer. Any time you can spend with Him is transforming. How do we respond to such a mystery? We respond with praise, adoration and joy. Our Lord gave us Himself in such a beautiful way at the Last Supper so that we would never be left alone. Once you have decided to visit with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, what do you do? What do you say? As you enter the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, you will see the Eucharist displayed in the monstrance. It is customary to genuflect and bow your head before taking your place. Kneel or sit as you wish. Once you have settled in, the question arises, now what? St. Clare of Assisi gave us a suggestion: 1. Gaze: Spend time simply looking at the Host. Take time to see Jesus Christ there. His Real Presence is essential to our faith. It s worth taking time in quiet connection. 2. Consider: Think of Jesus in the context of His life. Reflect on His ministry to the sick, his agony in the garden and His passion, death and the resurrection that followed. Think of this great gift He offers you, that you might spend some time with Him. 3. Contemplate: Pray. Pour your heart out to Christ. Ask Him to help you with your concerns and worries. Thank Him for all His gifts. Praise Him for the glories of the world in which we live. Speak to Him as you would a close friend. Jesus knows what you need; speak plainly from your heart. 4. Imitate: Eucharistic Adoration has had a profound effect on the lives of those who spend time in communion with Him. The peace that surpasses all others is attainable through Adoration. Take His peace back into your daily life. This style of prayer can help you focus on Jesus during your time with Him. There are other things you can do: Read a passage of scripture and reflect on it with Jesus; recite the rosary reflecting on the moments of His life; keep a spiritual journal; read a spiritual book (look for one with prayers, quotes from saints or specifically for Holy Hours).
