When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." "Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. (John 20: 19-31) Thomas's honesty about his doubts has put him in a bad light with some people, who call him Doubting Thomas. Doubt can signify persistent unbelief. Doubt can also be a doorway to deeper faith. Thomas lived and listened to Jesus for three years. He knew him well, ate with him, laughed with him, traveled with him, witnessed his miracles, and yet, still had doubts. If someone who was so close to Jesus, had his faith tested and doubted, is it so unusual for us to sometimes struggle with our faith. Jesus invites Thomas to touch his wounds and then believe. Thomas exclaims, "My Lord and my God. His doubt is gone. People often voice their doubt that God could love or forgive them. They see their sin as too great and "if God only knew me." God knows us, and God's divine mercy is greater than any sin. Jesus breathed on the disciples saying, "Receive the Holy Spirit." We have received the Spirit. Let Christ breathe on you, touch your wounds, and allow yourself to cry out, "My Lord and my God! Thank you for such wonderful, merciful love." 3 Confirmation for Adults We invite any non-confirmed parishioner, age 21 and older, who, if married, is in a valid marriage in the Catholic Church, to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday, May 20. Evening Bible Study The Bible Plain and Simple Mondays/Thursdays 7:00 PM 8:30 PM Please join us on Monday or Thursday evening to read and study Romans. San Francisco Solano s Evening Bible Study is a multi-year course: The Bible Plain and Simple. Our mission is to discover the Bible systematically, verse-by-verse, Genesis through Revelation, utilizing a combination of audio and video taught by renowned literary scholar, Dr. Bill Creasy who has been called a Catholic Bible teacher extraordinaire! Our study of Romans has begun and will end the week of May 21. (We will NOT meet on 2/15, 2/19, 3/26, 3/29, 4/2, and 4/5.) There is no cost. Parish Ministries 3 Eucharistic Adoration The Eucharist is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ and He calls us to spend time with Him in prayer and adoration. Each month, we have a 24-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament beginning on the first Monday of the month and a 12-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the third Tuesday of the month. We encourage you to consider spending some time with Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Morning, afternoon, and evening time slots are available. Our next 12-hour adoration will be April 17 (8:30 AM-8:30 PM) Our next 24-hour adoration will be May 7-8. 5 Parish Ministries Children of Christ s Heart Children of Christ s Heart is partnering with Family Support Network of Orange County to facilitate a Parent-to-Parent Support Group meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. The group is intended for anyone offering care and support for a child or young adult with special needs. In addition to a spiritually based, emotionally supportive environment, we will offer presentations on topics of interest and assistance with IEPs, Regional Center, California Children s Services and CalOptima. Baptism Ministry Needs Volunteers The Baptism Ministry is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping prepare parents for the baptism of their children, your help would be appreciated. The key quality needed for the Baptism Ministry is a welcoming personality, as we are often one of the first contacts families have with the parish. The time commitment associated with this ministry is small. Currently, five couples share responsibility for small group gatherings at the church (2 times per year) and assist at Sunday baptism celebrations in the parish (2 times per year). All women of the parish are invited to explore this program, which has been described as a spa for your soul. Women's Circle is a peer ministry for women of all ages and stages of life, offering an opportunity to nurture our spirituality, deepen our faith, and build community. This season we will be using a wonderful new resource by Liz Curtis Higgs. The Women of Easter: Encounter the Savior with Mary of Bethany, Mary of Nazareth, and Mary Magdalene. Take time this Lenten Season to experience Easter through the eyes of three women named Mary each of whom had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. Your mind and emotions will be engaged and your faith strengthened as each scene unfolds, preparing your heart for a richer, deeper experience of Lent and Easter. This session will run through Tuesday, May 1. Meetings will be held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday mornings (9:30-11:30 AM) and evenings (6-8 PM). 6 Adult Catholics Growing in Faith What and When is Spy Wednesday? In Western Christianity, the Wednesday before Easter is sometimes known as Spy Wednesday, indicating that it is the day that Judas Iscariot first conspired with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus for thirty silver coins. This event is described in the three Synoptic Gospels: Matthew 26:14-16, Mark 14:10-12, Luke 22:3-6. The Sanhedrin was gathered together and it decided to kill Jesus, even before Pesach if possible. In the meantime, Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper. Here he was anointed on the head by Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, with very expensive ointment of spikenard. Some of the disciples were indignant about this; the oil could have been sold to support the poor. Judas went to the Sanhedrin and offered them his support in exchange for money. From this moment on Judas was looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. Different countries observe it with different customs: * Poland: children traditionally hurled an effigy of Judas from the church steeple. It was then dragged through the village, pounded with sticks and stones and what was left of it was drowned in a nearby pond or river. * Czech Republic: the day is traditionally called Ugly Wednesday, Soot-Sweeping Wednesday or Black Wednesday, because chimneys used to be swept on this day, to be clean for Easter. * Malta: this day is known as L-Erbg-a tat-tnieber (Drums Wednesday), in the past children went to the parish church and drummed on the chairs to make the sound of thunderstorms.
