3 Dear Friends in Christ, The Lenten season will soon be upon us. We will once again have many special opportunities to hear God's word. Many people come to Lenten worship and many do not. Of course it does no good for ones church to have these special services if an individual doesn't plan on coming anyway. This Pastor Darrel Bergelin year we again invite and encourage each one of you to take advantage of these special worship opportunities. Once again we will have a pulpit exchange with some of our neighboring LCMS Pastors. What a wonderful Savior we have, to think that He would give His life for us. To willingly die for another is an act of love that really has no equal. We can never doubt the deep love Christ has for us. To hear how some people in our world blame God for their troubles and problems, as if God were mean and out to get them is unthinkable for the true child of God. Our assurance is that the loving Lord walks with us each and every day. How comforting it is to know that we have help with our struggles. Each of His names depict an aspect of His love. Come and be a part of these special worship opportunities this year. Serving Christ, Pastor Darrel Bergelin 3

4 Dear Members and Friends of Trinity, 4 Vicar Coop s Message Well, you ve probably figured it out by now, I like to sing hymns! Sorry for the times I ve sounded like Foghorn Leghorn (unfortunately there may be a few more of those times to come before I have to leave), but there is something special, for me, about singing hymns. The more and more that I sing them, the more and more they become something like old friends to me, retelling to me the truths of God s Word, and reminding me what life looks like as a Christian. And one of these old friend, favorite hymns of mine is coming up on the time when it has historically been used in the Church. LSB 417, Alleluia, Song of Gladness has historically been used in the Church as the final hymn on The Transfiguration of Our Lord Sunday, or the Last Sunday after the Epiphany and the last Sunday before Lent begins. This hymn has traditionally been used in this final spot because it describes how we bury the alleluia, or how we omit using the word alleluia during the penitential season of Lent. Now, while this hymn was written almost 1,000 years ago, it still clearly describes everyday life for us today, as Christians. Let me walk you through the third verse of this hymn, which goes, Alleluia cannot always Be our song while here below; Alleluia, our transgressions Make us for a while forgo; For the solemn time is coming When our tears for sin must flow. We know, full well, from our everyday lives, that we simply don t always praise God (which is what the word alleluia means). So many things happen in our lives that cause us to forget, or turn us away from praising God. And the hymn writer goes on to explain to us the very thing that prevents this from happening: sin, more specifically, our sin. As much as we want to blame the sin that we see in our own lives on other people and other things around us, we simply cannot do this, or we simply continue to lie to ourselves. Our sin causes to forget and turn away from praising God. The hymn writer then concludes this verse by showing us what we are to do, as Christians, after our act of sin: repent, or turn away from and show sorrow for the sin that we have committed. Notice, though, that the hymn writer talks about the shedding of our tears, and not about the shedding of our blood for the sins we commit. While we show sorrow and grief over the sins we commit, and confess them, the shedding of our blood would do nothing for our sins. But God, out of His infinite love for us, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to shed His blood, and through His shed blood your sins, my sins, and the sins of all others were covered, or satisfied and atoned for. Now, that s something makes me want to sing! But, that s enough about one of my favorite hymns. Catch me before or after church, or any other time throughout the week, and let me know what your favorite hymn is, and why! In Christ, Vicar Andrew Coop

6 Elders Corner and Lent/Easter Elder s Corner As February begins and Valentine s Day approaches, we hear of people sending and receiving cards, flowers and various other gifts from friends and loved ones. Many of these cards will say I Love You. As meaningful as those words are to the sender and receiver of the cards, this love is merely an earthly love. As I ponder this word love, I am reminded that there is no deeper love in this world than God s love for us as stated in John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Thank you Heavenly Father for Your great love in sending Your only Son so that we might have eternal life in heaven with You. Amen Christian Women s Fellowship Angie welcomed everyone o the meeting. Elisabeth is the daughter of Nathan and Jennie Cassity. Winterim week Meteorology. Inventions & Technology. Exploring Teaching. Basic Wilderness Survival. History in the Movies. The Creator s Chemistry. These were course selections from this year s Winterim session at LHS. Winterim is held the first week back after Christmas break where students can choose their unique pursuit of interest from subject offerings by the Lutheran High faculty. Students acquire new knowledge, expand learning beyond the classroom, and explore interests. Each course is a full day of experiments and experiences, field trips, movies, and even learning a few new skills. Also included this year was Basketball Coaching 101; Food: The Heart, Soul, & Science; Genres of Dance; A Christian Leadership Look at the Olympics; Work it Out; Wish, Say, Do; and Broadway, Baseball & the Beatles. As in previous years, LHS hosted a variety of speakers during the Winterim week. Amalia s Hope, Brad Alles, and the AXIS Group all led our students in large-group presentations. Supporting our mission to Prepare Christian Leaders - One Student at a Time, our speakers discussed the challenges our students face and will face in society today. Bridgette Henschel of Amalia s Hope shared the pain of drug addiction and informed the group of the need to make good, healthy decisions in life. Brad Alles talked with our students on Angels, 11 Demons and the Occult and how satan is active and working in our society today to deceive and dissuade despite the fact that in Christ we have the ultimate victory over sin, death, and even the devil, himself. He did an excellent job of pointing our students to God s Word and seeing that what is in God s Word is in God s world; the Creator is seen in His creation! The AXIS group came in on Friday to deliver a high-energy, technology-rich presentation that drove home the personal question, Do you own technology or does technology own you? In the course of discussion our students were challenged to evaluate the ways they interact with one another and how they use social media in both a positive and negative light. Encouraged by Scripture to live out their vocation as Christ s children, the AXIS group showed our students ways to break the addiction to technology and explore Christian fellowship with each other. In some of our Winterim courses this theme was reiterated. One class on Leadership in Board Games showed students how putting their phones down and breaking out a board game may not only lead to a wonderful evening with friends but can provide the benefit of supporting brain-health and development. Starting a pattern of positive behavior with Christian friends now can reap fantastic dividends down the road.
