March 2017 Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Psalm 32 Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11 Full Meal How Jesus gets into the wilderness is intriguing. Having just been affirmed as God's beloved Son, who would choose to fast for forty days? Not even Jesus does. Certainly this can only be the work of the Spirit. While in the wilderness Jesus confronts three temptations from the devil. A pastor asked some catechism students what is at stake in these temptations. Why is it so important for Jesus to reject them? One student said, "It's like when my parents have a dinner party." She was asked to say more. "Well," she started, "the party always starts with hors d'oeuvres. Everyone stands around sampling, but no one gets really excited about eating everything because they know dinner is coming." Not getting it, the pastor asked her how that helped her understand Jesus' behavior. She explained, "Jesus came to be a meal for us. If he had changed the stones into bread, he'd have just given us hors d'oeuvres!" In Matthew 14 and 15, Jesus will feed thousands with bread, fish, prayer, and blessing. Ultimately in 26:26 he will reveal himself to be the meal of forgiveness and salvation for all people. It is this meal, the bread of life, we receive at the Lord's table. Jesus will be raised up on the cross and again challenged to save himself-"if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross" (Matt. 27:40)-but again he rejects the temptation. Instead, for our sake, he dies and is laid in a tomb. People find Christ's meaning for the world not by possessing power over earthly kingdoms, but through encountering the resurrected Christ who sends disciples to serve in the world God loves. This walk is not accomplished alone. We, like Jesus, minister to others only through the leading and partnership of the Spirit. Reprinted from Words for Worship, 2016 Augsburg Fortress.
