Welcome to Trinity Lutheran Church Confession has two parts, first, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself. - Martin Luther Trinity Lutheran Church Worship Services are aired on Cable TV, Channel 14, Sunday at 5:30 p.m. & Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Services are also aired on Sheboygan Cable Channel 95 and Digital Channel 990 Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. OPENING HYMN : Please rise Trinity Lutheran Church Worship Times: Thursday Evenings at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday Mornings at 9:30 a.m. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION: 915 Today Your Mercy Calls Us In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen Our help is in the name of the Lord. Congregation: Who made heaven and earth. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? Congregation: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God be merciful to me, a sinner. Please kneel Congregation: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, Holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Congregation: Amen Please rise THE INTROIT: (we read together) The Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves the crushed in spirit. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord. Let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together! I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the broken hearted and 2 saves the crushed in spirit.
Kyrie is an abbreviated form of the Greek phrase Kyrie Eleison meaning Lord have mercy. It was the common cry of those who needed the Lord s help such as the ten Lepers (Luke 7:13) and blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:47) and it is our prayer today. The Salutation is more than a simple greeting; it is indicative of the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. KYRIE: Sung (LSB Page 204) GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Glory to God in the Highest (Sung LSB Page 204) SALUTATION: To God on high be glory And peace to all the earth: Goodwill from God in heaven Proclaimed at Jesus birth! We praise and bless You, Father; Your holy name, we sing Our thanks for Your great glory, Lord God, our heav nly King. To You, O sole begotten, the Father s Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, You take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; Receive our heartfelt cry, Where You in pow r are seated At God s right hand on high. The Lord be with you. For You alone are holy; You only are the Lord. Forever and forever, Be worshipped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit Alone are Lord Most High, In God the Father s glory. Amen! our glad reply. Congregation: And also with you. Let us pray THE COLLECT: O God, Your divine wisdom sets in order all things in heaven and on earth. Put away from us all things hurtful and give us those things that are beneficial for us. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Congregation: Amen Please be seated. 3
Twenty First Sunday after Pentecost Old Testament From Apostolic times to the present the reading of Lessons from the Scriptures has been the central feature of the Service of the Word. Epistle Epistle is from the Latin word for letter. The Epistle Reading is taken from one of the New Testament Letters. OLD TESTAMENT READING: Ecclesiastes 5: He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? 12 Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep. 13 There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt, 14 and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand. 15 As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand. 16 This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind? 17 Moreover, all his days he eats in darkness in much vexation and sickness and anger. 18 Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. 19 Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. This is the Word of the Lord. Congregation: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE: Hebrews 4:1-16 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest, although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. 5 And again in this passage he said, They shall not enter my rest. 6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he appoints a certain day, Today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. This is the Word of the Lord Congregation: Thanks be to God 8:00am Solo: Jenny Maske All Because of God s Amazing Grace 10:30am Duet: Harvey Grunewald, Eileen Perronne Jesus the Master 4
Gospel The Gospel is the Good News that God in Jesus Christ has fulfilled his promised plan of salvation The Apostles Creed, while not written by the Apostles, contains the teachings of the Apostles to the early church. Please rise for the Alleluia and Verse THE ALLELUIA AND VERSE: (Sung LSB Page 205) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 10:23-31 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 10th chapter beginning at verse 23. Congregation: Glory to you, O Lord. 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, Then who can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God. 28 Peter began to say to him, See, we have left everything and followed you. 29 Jesus said, Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. Congregation: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. THE APOSTLES CREED:(we confess together) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6 Offering Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. Malachi 3:10 Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) As our voices join the unending hymn of praise that swirls around God s throne in Heaven (Isaiah 6:3, Revelation 4:8) we experience a reality unlike anything else in this world. This is truly Heaven on earth! PREFACE Congregation: Congregation: Congregation: THE COMMUNION LITURGY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS: Holy, Holy, Holy (Sung LSB Page 208) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Sabaoth adored; Heaven and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. 6
The Lord s Prayer When the disciples asked, Lord, teach us to pray, Jesus gave us the Lord s prayer. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD S PRAYER THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them saying. "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. PAX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you always Congregation: Amen AGNUS DEI Lamb of God (Sung LSB Page 210) Agnus Dei We sing this hymn to Christ who is truly present in His body and blood. As we feast on the Lamb of God, we receive forgiveness, assurance, glad confidence, and joyful certainty. 1. O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. 2. O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray. 8 Nunc Dimittis Like Simeon, we rejoice that we, too, have seen and touched our Lord on the altar, the paten, the chalice and the tongue. Thus we sing Nunc Dimittis Now dismiss us, good Lord, into whatever plans you have for us. Benediction The term Benediction is from the Latin, meaning to bless. The Benediction is an act of giving God s blessing. (Please rise) NUNC DIMITTIS: Song of Simeon (Sung LSB Page 211) 1. O Lord, now let Your servant Depart in heav nly peace, For I have seen the glory Of Your redeeming grace: A light to lead the Gentiles Unto Your holy hill, The glory of Your people, Your chosen Israel. 2. All glory to the Father, All glory to the Son, All glory to the Spirit, Forever Three in One; For as in the beginning, Is now, shall ever be, God s triune name resounding, Through all eternity. POST-COMMUNION COLLECT Let us pray.
