2 OPENING HYMN: Please rise INVOCATION 366 It Came upon the Midnight Clear In the name of God the Father who created us, in the name of God the Son who redeemed us, in the name of God the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us. In the name of the Triune God, the only true God, we begin our worship this day. To Him be all honor and glory now and forever. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Our God is a great God. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. With him nothing shall be impossible. With God all things are possible. But we by ourselves have fallen short, we have sinned, we do not deserve to be called God s children. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. CONFESSIOIN OF SINS Let us kneel and confess our sins to God our Father. All: ABSOLUTION: Please be seated. HYMN: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the LORD's. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, What does this mean? you shall say to him, By a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15 For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 2:22-40 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 2nd chapter beginning at verse 22. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. LIFELINE SCREENING Lifeline will be here on Saturday, January 5th. Lifeline screening offers residents the opportunity to discover their risk for chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, peripheral arterial disease, or other vascular conditions. The screenings are conducted by highly trained sonographers using the same sophisticated ultrasound equipment employed by major hospitals. To make your reservation, pick up a flyer located on the table in the narthex. TODAY S LIGHT Ordering Today s Light is a great way to grow in your faith as you read through daily devotions and Scripture. Today s Light is a quarterly magazine that you will be able to read the entire Bible in 2 years. If you would like to order Today s Light, the cost is $27.00 for one year or $50.00 for 2 years. VOTER S MEETING INSTALLATION OF OFFERS Installation of all Officers and Committee Members will take place at both our worship services on Sunday January 6th. This includes those that are newly elected as well as those who are continuing to serve. VICAR S BIBLE STUDY Martin Luther once identified three things that make a good theologian: prayer for the Holy Spirit to understand God s unique biblical Word; meditation on this Word; and, as the touchstone, enduring afflictions due to meditating on God s Word. Join together with Vicar Rusche for this 6 week Bible Study were we ll unpack what Scripture has to say about afflictions in the life of the Christian, the cross we will endure in various shapes and sizes, because we are Christians. Join us either Monday mornings or Thursday evenings starting January 7th. BRUNCH We will be going out to eat at Breaking Bread in Sheboygan on Sunday, January 20, 2018 at 12:15pm. CEMETERY COMPUTER PROGRAM We are looking for someone who would like to work with or create a program showing the layout of the cemetery and all gravesites including owners and unsold lots. LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE LHS Open House: Interested in attending LHS for the school year or do you know someone who is? Please attend the Sheboygan Lutheran High School Open House from 4:30 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15. 5th 8th grade students will have the opportunity to meet the teachers, explore class offerings and extra-curriculars, and get in free to the boys basketball game that evening. Tours of the school will be available and incoming freshmen can register and select classes (Sign-up on the LHS Website). A Shadow Day is also a great way to experience the daytime activity of high school. Spend a half or whole school day with an LHS freshman and attend classes, band/choir, enjoy lunch, and meet other students. Parents and students interested in the advanced and online classes at LHS are encouraged to attend the Open House for in-depth information on offerings, as well as our full curriculum list.
