1 Trinity Lutheran Church The monthly Newsletter of Trinity Lutheran Church. Dedicated to the Glory of the Triune God. Sent to inform members and friends about the Mission and ministry of our Lord s Church. A PUBLICATION OF FIRST ANY CHURCH TRIANGLE February 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends in Christ, It's hard to believe that the month of February is upon us. It is a reminder that the season of winter is moving along. Oh I understand there can be a lot of winter left, but somehow saying February sounds better than January. Of course as the months of the year roll along, so Bring your Valentine to Ash Wednesday Service on February 14th. does life itself. Where would any of us be were it not for the loving Lord being at our side as we roll through the months of life. In February we always hear a lot of talk about love, especially as Valentines Day approaches. This is fine and good. But we always need to remember that in church each week we are able to hear about a much greater love, the love the Lord has for sinners. Were it not for His love for us, none VISIT US could look forward to heaven. Of all the things money can buy for a person, true love isn't one of them. It is a sad situation if one feels there is no one that loves them. You show me family members that don't get along and I will show you family members that don't love as they ought. It is hard to understand how some hearts can become so hard that they aren't even bothered when they place themselves in direct contradiction to the Lord who remind us all that we are to love for one reason, because He first loved us. So, enjoy Valentines Day. Think about the people that the Lord has put in your life that love you. Then ponder how the Lord wants you to love, and finally spend time giving thanks to the Lord for His great love. 2 Vicar Koester s Message Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Howards Grove, Normally, February is a bit of a bland month. Don t tell my dad and my sister I said that, since both of their birthdays are in February. However, unless your team is playing in the Super Bowl or you re getting really into another hobby you have, it can be kind of boring and hard to get through. We re in the dead of winter and it s starting to become extremely apparent. But this year there is something to pass the time, the Winter Olympics. We get to watch American athletes travel to exotic lands and take part in a lavish opening ceremony. Then we get to see them go against the best of the best in their particular sport. Events you would seldom care about otherwise suddenly become extremely compelling. Maybe you ll get into curling, a Minnesota special. Historically, the Olympics started in Ancient Greece, in the city of Athens. There would be competitions between the various Greek city-states including wrestling and track and field. Greek culture was so influential throughout history, that these Olympic games were resurrected in the 20 th century. In the 1 st century, the apostle Paul travelled all around Greece as a witness to the Gentiles. After a while, Paul s many escapes and scrapes with death caught up with him. He wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Paul expected that he would die soon. Even though He was a Roman citizen with the ability to appeal to Caesar, the hostility to the Gospel from powerful people was too high for him to survive. Nevertheless, Paul looked at the way God had used him throughout his life and his faith never wavered. Paul describes the Christian life as a race and that is a very appropriate way to think about it. When we were baptized, we were welcomed into God s family. But that doesn t mean we were transported to the finish line. God created us each with unique gifts and talents to be used here on earth as we all fulfill our vocations. Many times, life is hard and it is difficult to keep going. With God s help, we can overcome any hurdle that we come across and He strengthens us to be able to get back up when we stumble. When we finish the race, there is more cheering and joy from the angels in heaven than there ever could be from the biggest crowds here on earth. So when you see a skier reach the bottom of the hill or a speed skater win by a nose, remember that we are running our own race to the finish line in our lives. Because of Jesus death on the cross and His resurrection, we receive something much more precious than gold medals. We receive eternal life with Him. In Christ, Vicar Kevin Koester Lenten Times: Wednesday February 14, 21,28 March 7, 14, 21 10:30am &. Join us for our Lenten Services held every Wednesday beginning Ash Wednesday, February 14th. 4 Just a reminder, scrip is no longer sold after the 10:30am worship service. We are just getting started in Many people are looking to make changes in their lives and establish plans for this New Year. Each year I am required to create a document for my employer describing what changes I will work on to improve myself in the coming year. Some of the criteria we can gage ourselves by are; knowledge, commitment, willingness to improve, and our ability to help and encourage others. In our fall stewardship sessions, we cover many of the same ideas. We are always encouraged to attend services regularly and to encourage others as well. For some people, this means they would have to change something in their lives. Change is not always easy. It takes a commitment to make a change in our lives. If we are to follow the Lord, we are to do as He instructs us in the Bible. Matthew 18:3 & 4 reads; and he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Angie opened the January meeting 8, 2018 meeting. Prayers and support are needed for Mission Central, the January project for Mites. The Treasurer s report showed a balance of $135.36, after a $ donation to the Tabitha Fund. Committee Reports: Fellowship: Cards sent. Service: Banner Changes, Taking decorations down. Education: Vicar Koester has a Bible Study. Old Business: Our dime project is due tonight. We will keep back $50.00 for the Vicar and the rest as a donation to the victims of the recent fire in Howards Grove. A last reminder of the LWML Winter Getaway on January 19 & 20 in Fond du lac at the Holiday Inn. Another reminder of the upcoming 2018 LWML SWD Convention in Waukesha on June 22 & 23. Elder s Corner heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. We must have the faith and trust like that of a child who trusts their parents. With this commitment to trust in the Lord, we can change and improve our Christian way of living. We are all thankful that the Lord does not change. He never will leave us and is always by our side. We can rely on His word at all times. Hebrews 13:8 tells us; Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Malachi 3:6 reads; "I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. We pray, Heavenly Father, we are saved by your grace, as we go into this New Year in our lives. Please grant us the ability to make those changes necessary for us to become better Christians this coming year. In Jesus name we pray, amen. Christian Women s Fellowship CWF meets the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00pm. New Business: Quarterly payment of $5.00 due at the February meeting for March deadline for ordering. 6 Sheboygan Lutheran High School Winterim week Exploring Teaching. Inventions and Technology. Coach em Up. Basic Wilderness Survival. History in the Movies. The Creator s Chemistry: It s His Lab. These were course selections from this year s Winterim session at LHS. Winterim is held the first week back after Christmas break where students can choose their unique pursuit of interest from subject offerings by the Lutheran High faculty. Students acquire new knowledge, expand learning beyond the classroom, and explore interests. Each course is a full day of experiments and experiences, field trips, movies, and even learning a few new skills. Also included this year was Workout Extravaganza with Yoga; Leadership Games: A History of Board Games and Leadership Lessons Taught by Them; Be Prepared, Not Scared: Problem Solving; Forensics - The Art of Public Speaking; and A Lutheran High Renaissance. As in previous years, LHS hosted a variety of speakers during the Winterim week. Dr. Jim Pingel (Former Executive Director and Current Professor of Education at Concordia University Wisconsin) spoke of how God has provided us with individual experiences to share our faith in the Lord. Each life experience shapes us and it is how we apply the Biblical teachings we have learned that allow us to witness to others. We can all be thankful for the gifts and passions God has given us and we should use them to honor Him. Mr. Brad Alles spoke on gender identity issues in our society. He educated us on terminology and current statistics as he shared how this post- Modernism is different than our Christian Worldview on topics of the Truth and the Bible. The students watched the movie Screenagers, which dealt with addiction, and issues with too much technology in our lives, and students and their relationships with their families and friends. After the movie, a Sheboygan School officer shared the dangers of the internet for students. He addressed some concerns with the Facebook app and how the internet is not controlled by any single entity. Dr. Darlene Mech came and spoke about mental health issues that we face including depression and how teenagers have a higher risk based on external and developmental factors. Overall it s always a very interesting week. Students write a paper at the end of the Winterim week for a grade in the course, but we hope they gain wisdom and insight into new and challenging topics. It s another way of preparing our students for Christian Leadership. Saturday, Lutheran High Student Leaders of the Month have been chosen based on their service, behavior, leadership, attitude, & academic achievements. Senior - Emily Lindsey St. John Lutheran, Plymouth Junior - Hannah Dirkse Calvin Christian Reformed Sophomore - Zachary Jaeger St. John Lutheran, Plymouth Freshman - Aidan Diener St. Paul Lutheran, Sheboygan Falls
