4 EPISTLE: Ephesians 5: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Tom Weber HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 7:1-13 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 7th chapter beginning at verse 1. Glory to you, O Lord. Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands? 6 And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men. 9 And he said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother ; and, Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die. 11 But you say, If a man tells his father or his mother, Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban (that is, given to God) 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. Our Sunday school kick-off is planned for Sunday September 9 th after the late service We will have hot dogs, chips, and ice cream. There will be games, nail painting, face painting and guess the number of goldfish in the bowl! Please bring your lawn chairs. In case of rain, the kick-off will be held in the Lower Fellowship Hall. We need volunteers for the games and food. If you are able to help, there is a volunteer sign-up sheet in the narthex. SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE CLASS Our culture has much to say about topics such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, end of life issues and artificial reproductive technology. But what does God s Word tell us? This year our Bible Study will discuss these issues that are pressing upon the Church at this time and that require us all to be grounded firmly and surely in the Word of God as we respond to the dramatic changes in our culture. Each participant or couple will receive an updated edition of the Luther s Small Catechism with Explanation. Our Bible Classes are very relaxed and fun. You will never be called upon to read or answer a question. Coffee and snacks are served. We hope you will join us beginning Sunday, September 9th at 9:15am. VICAR RUSCHE BIBLE STUDY Journey beyond the Wardrobe into the Word behind the world of Narnia. Entertaining children and adults alike since its publication in 1950, CS Lewis classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe tells the story of 4 siblings escaping the calamity of World War 2 and discovering a magical world full of fawns, talking beavers, evil queens and almighty lions. But as Lewis himself would attest, there s more to this work than meets the eye. This 6 week course will delve into the world of Narnia as Lewis lays it out, providing us with a deeper understanding of the man behind the story and the faith that inspired him. Join us as we dive into the timeless classic as well as Scripture to find the voice of our Lord and Savior in the roar of the mighty Aslan. Grab a friend and join us Monday mornings at 10:00a.m., or Thursday evenings at 6:30p.m., beginning September 10th. A complete schedule will be given on the first day of Bible Study. MORNING MEDITATIONS Morning Meditations is a devotion by area LCMS Pastors each morning, Monday through Friday, on WHBL-1330AM at 7:26am and at 10:45am. OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY AND BEST OF THE HOLY LAND Trinity Lutheran Church in Weatherford, Texas is taking a trip to the Holy Land and the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, June of 2020, and has invited our congregation to join them. Rev. Tim Fraker, husband of Darci Bergelin Fraker is the Pastor of Trinity. The first part of the trip is spent in the Holy Land where we will walk through the Garden of Gethsemane, sail on the Sea of Galilee, journey to Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and so much more. The last week of the trip we fly to Munich and are transferred to Alpine Village. We will tour many places, but the main attraction is the Passion play. The Passion Play is a reenactment of the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ and is performed every 10 years. Performers were born in Oberammergau or have lived there for at least 20 years. Over 2000 Oberammergau villagers will participate in the 2020 Passion Play. The trip is June 15-June 27, There are brochures located on the table in the narthex describing the entire trip. If you are interested in this trip, please write your name on the form in the narthex. This does not lock you into the trip. We would just like to know if there is anyone interested from our church.
