By all accounts, he was a brilliant physicist who had the ability to explain the theory of everything. For all his brilliance, however, Hawking believed that the universe is governed by the laws of science. Hawking was an atheist. In one interview he said that the simplest explanation for the origins of the universe is that there is no God, no one created the universe, there is no heaven and probably no afterlife either. By contrast, Pope Francis quotes Psalm 33 to explain that by the word of the Lord the heavens were made. Pope Francis says that the world came about as the result of a decision, a free choice, an order of love. God s love is the fundamental moving force in all created things. Each living thing reveals some aspect of God who inter-penetrates all created things, for those who have faith. Steven Hawking was a brilliant man but he had no faith. Remember what Jesus said in Luke s Gospel, although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them to the childlike. We don t need to be brilliant physicists to know that Jesus Christ is really truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist, and that faith in Jesus Christ will accomplish your salvation. Now that Steven Hawking has met God I wonder what he would say to us about heaven and the afterlife, and I wonder what he would say to us about how we re living our lives.

2 Lenten Fast & Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual Palm Pancake Breakfast and Blood Drive next, March 25th from 8 until 11:30. Sausage, all you can eat pancakes, fruit cup and beverages for a freewill donation. All proceeds will go to the Mantellate Sisters for a new driveway. Plus, this Season please consider giving the gift of life by donating blood. Sign up sheets are located at the Knight's table in the Narthex. Lenten Fish Fry St. Francis Xavier Parish &The Knights of Columbus will once again be hosting the Lenten Fish Fry. This years dates will be February 16th and 23rd, March 2nd, 9th and 23rd from 4:30-7:30pm. We are seeking volunteers to help with these events. Sign up sheets will be located at the Knights table in the Narthex. Help is needed in all areas from cooking, set up, clean up and serving. Bake goods will also be requested for the dessert table. If you can spare an hour or two, it will be greatly appreciated. Blanket Ministry These blankets are either sewn, quilted, knitted, crocheted or fleece-tied by volunteers who pray while making the blanket. Once completed, a card is attached to the blanket and then blessed by Fr. Karl. The blessed blankets are presented to the recipient(s), letting them know that they remain in our thoughts and prayers even if they cannot be with us at Mass. We are now seeking volunteers to use their time, talent and material to help replenish our supply of blankets. Some material has recently been donated to the ministry for those who can sew or quilt. For those who knit or crochet, there are patterns available for prayer shawls. Contact: Karen at krea@comcast.net Bags of Hope Bags of Hope fills backpacks with food every week, delivering them to roughly 190 kids right here in Plainfield School District 202 whose families are struggling to make ends meet at home. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 4/7 and 4/8 Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. 4 Elizabeth Ministry This outreach encompasses pregnancy, pregnancy complications, birth, infant or child crisis, fertility and infertility concerns, miscarriage, infant or child death, family life and grand-parenting issues. In the past, family members, neighbors and friends met these needs. Today, our busy lifestyles and constant relocation to new towns, the presence of family or friends may not always be possible during these critical times. Elizabeth Ministry responds to this need by offering like-to-like ministry through personal visits. Contact the parish for more information (or Elizabeth Kingsbury-Puscas, MSW, LSW (This is NOT therapy). SCRIP Scrip is sold after every mass. Please make Scrip part of your monthly gas or grocery budget. Stop by the Scrip table for more information on ordering. We place special orders the 3rd of the month. March orders will be placed March 18th. April orders will be placed April 15th. Please consider helping at the table after Mass. It only takes minutes. Please Cindy Thomas at for information or to volunteer. Pilgrimage to Lourdes 2018 is the 160 anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes. If there is a enough interest I would be happy to organize a pilgrimage to Lourdes and Fatima taking in some of the French shrines. There would need to be around 30 people to make it possible. Contact me if you are interested and we can work out with a travel agent the details if we have the numbers. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
