IVAN S DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which begins with the commemoration of Christ s triumphal entrance into Jerusalem - the city that he loved - in order to accomplish his Paschal Mystery the passage from death to life. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis encouraged us, in his very first homily (three years ago this week), to walk in the presence of the Lord, with the Lord s Cross; to build the Church on the Lord s blood which was poured out on the Cross; and to profess the one glory: Christ crucified. On this Palm (Passion) Sunday, we will begin each Mass with the blessing of the palms/branches in the Church. And a procession will be held on Sunday morning starting at 9:30am outside by the Parish Center. Allow me say a word about the different days and liturgies of Holy Week Holy Thursday The Mass of the Lord s Supper, commemorating the institution of the sacred priesthood and Christ s example of humble service (washing of the feet) will be celebrated at 7:30pm. This Mass marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, which the Church considers as one long liturgy, ending with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night (it is for this reason that there is no final blessing neither at this Mass, nor on Good Friday s liturgies). At the end of the Mass of the Lord s Supper, the Blessed Sacrament will be carried in procession to the altar of repose (Sts. Mary and Joseph Altar). The Church will remain open for private adoration and prayer throughout the evening. Morning Prayer which will be prayed together in the Main Church at 8:30am on Good Friday (in lieu of the morning Masses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we will pray Morning Prayer from the Church s Liturgy of the Hours daily at 8:30am). Good Friday This will be a day of silence, penance and reflection. I would therefore greatly encourage us all to take a day off from work in order to be better able to participate in the Church s liturgies. A reminder that Good Friday is a day of Fasting and Abstinence. Those who are in good health are also encouraged to observe the Paschal Fast which ends with the celebration of the Easter Vigil (it is a good way to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in the Lord s resurrection). The Celebration of the Lord s Passion will be held at 3PM and a Tenebrae service at 7:30pm. Please plan on attending these liturgies, in which we will have the opportunity to reflect on our own cross in our life and ask the Lord to help us carry it. We will also be encouraged to participate in the annual Good Friday Collection for the Church in the Holy Land. Holy Saturday The Holy Easter Vigil begins at 7:30pm. I heartily invite all our parishioners to attend this liturgy, during which our catechumens will be baptized. Come prepared for a powerful and longer liturgy, which is also called, the Mother of all Vigils. It would be the most fitting way to welcome our brothers and sisters who will become fully-fledged members of our parish during this most holy night, when Christ destroyed death forever. And of course, make sure to invite all your family and friends who have become distant from the Church to join us for the Easter Sunday Masses. Continued on Page 5 St. Bernard

3 STEWARDSHIP ==FROM THE PARISH ADMINISTRATOR== I want to give an update on rectory furnishings. To date the parish has received $1,940 for furnishings. We have purchased a rug for the living room as well as a sofa and 2 chairs. Several chests of drawers have been purchased and a few small lamps. We still have about $150 left in our furnishings fund. There are still a few rugs that need to be purchased especially a large one for the dining room. So if anyone would like to make a donation to the fund for rugs, we would gladly accept it. We are very grateful for the donations made to date. The new parish website will be going live at the end of March. We hope that you will find it helpful and provide you with more information and links to our Catholic faith. Parish & Community Events Easter Catechumens Reception The parish is invited to welcome the Easter catechumens who entered the church at the Easter Vigil. A reception will directly follow the Easter Vigil Mass in the High School Cafeteria (basement) where cake and refreshments will be served. An elevator is available in the link, if needed. Good Friday Pontifical Collection March 25 Pope Francis has asked that parishes around the world support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection. Through this collection you join with Catholics everywhere to help sustain Christianity in this troubled and challenging area of the world. Your support means that the Church is able to conduct parish ministries, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing, operate refugee centers and maintain shrines in the Holy Land. Please give generously on Good Friday and be an instrument of peace in the Holy Land. This is going to be a busy week at the church. The decorating committee will be busy getting things ready for the Triduum and Easter Sunday. Thank you for your always generous offerings for flowers. The church will be beautiful! Please consider participating in the Triduum liturgies. The Easter Vigil will be especially moving this year because of the 10 new Catholics that will be received into the Church. They have been preparing, as you know, since last September. It would be wonderful for the church to be filled to witness and support our new Christian brothers and sisters. A reception will be held in the high school cafeteria afterwards. What a celebration! I hope all of you have a blessed Holy Week. 4 Sacraments Call the Parish Office to make arrangements (651) Anointing of the Sick This Sacrament is to be celebrated when a person is suffering from a prolonged illness or when a person s condition becomes serious. Communion for the Sick & Homebound Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements. Baptism of Infants It is recommended that parents who wish to present their child for Baptism make arrangements several months before the due date, as the Church asks that children be baptized within a few weeks after birth. Parents should contact the Parish Office to meet with a priest. Baptism of Older Children & RCIA To become a full member of the Roman Catholic Church, contact the Parish Office. Marriage Preparation Couples anticipating Christian Marriage need to contact the Parish Office at least six months prior to the wedding date they desire. After a pre-nuptial interview with a priest, a specific date will be set. Marriage preparation classes are required. Easter Sunday We will have a full schedule of Masses, and we surely hope to see you, as we exchange the annual Easter Greeting, He is Risen He is Truly Risen. Make sure to teach the children about the greatness of this glorious day, coming to Mass nicely dressed, on time, and with a desire to celebrate the Lord s resurrection. Fr. Mary Ellen s life was celebrated at her funeral Mass on Wednesday, March 16. Eternal rest grant onto her Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her and the souls of all the faithful departed. May they rest in peace. Amen. The Paschal candle represents Christ, the Light of the World. The pure beeswax of which the candle is made represents the sinless Christ who was formed in the womb of His Mother. The wick signifies His humanity, the flame, His Divine Nature, both soul and body. Five grains of incense inserted into the candle in the form of a cross recall the aromatic spices with which His Sacred Body was prepared for the tomb, and of the five wounds in His hands, feet, and side. During the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night the priest or deacon carries the candle in procession into the dark church. A new fire, symbolizing our eternal life in Christ, is kindled which lights the candle. The candle, representing Christ himself, is blessed by the priest who then inscribes in it a cross, the first letters and last of the Greek alphabet, (Alpha and Omega `the beginning and the end') and the current year. He then affixes the five grains of incense. The Easter candle is lighted each day during Mass throughout the Paschal season until Ascension Thursday. St. Paul, Minnesota Page 5
