The Epiphany of the Lord Sunday January 7, 2018 All kings shall pay him homage, All nations shall serve him Bags of Hope Psalm 72:11 Bags of Hope fills backpacks with food every week, delivering them to roughly 190 kids right here in Plainfield School District 202 whose families are struggling to make ends meet at home. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 1/6 and 1/7 Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. 2 Vic Puscas Holy Family Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The natural tendency is to try to compare our families to the Holy Family and if we do that we usually end up disappointed in our own family. In my own extended family we have alcoholism, divorce, inter-racial marriage, inter-faith marriage, homosexuality, arrests, cancer, diabetes, domestic abuse and baptized and confirmed Catholics who no longer go to church. In short, my family is not how I wish my family was. But if we re honest, we are not the people we wish we were either. If we re honest with ourselves, our hearts are not pure; our hearts are filled with need and greed as much as with love and grace; and we wrestle with our hearts all the time. The wrestling is who we are. How we wrestle is who we are. What we want our lives to be, or what we wish our families were, is never what we truly are. Not yet. Maybe that s why we have a restlessness in our souls driving us toward what might be. St. Augustine said, Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee. Maybe it s because of that restlessness that we can compare ourselves to the Holy Family. Mary and Joseph tell us a lot about what makes a family holy. Mary is an unwed mother, because of the order from Caesar, she and Joseph are required to walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census. (80 miles -33 hours) Then Mary gives birth in a stable crawling with dangerous vermin and foul odors and they place Jesus in a feeding trough. 8 days later they have to walk for 2 hours to the Temple in Jerusalem for the circumcision. Then back to Bethlehem, back to the Temple 32 days later for the Presentation, then back to Bethlehem. Then Herod orders the killing of all male children 2 years old and younger so Mary and Joseph walk to Egypt, about a 40 mile walk taking over two days to arrive. Mary and Joseph must have been sick with fear and anxiety. Their lives were hard, and humble, but through it all, they obeyed God, and that s the point of today s feast. What makes a family holy is its willingness to surrender to the purposes of God just like Mary and Joseph did. We tend to want to blame or make people feel guilty for all of those things in our families that we don t think measure up to what people should be doing with their lives - to what we think is holy. But in today s second reading, St. Paul tells us to be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient with one another, and above all, to love one another. Love wins over guilt any day. It is sad that we settle for the short-run effectiveness of shaming people instead of the long-term benefits of grace-filled transformation. But we are a culture of progress and efficiency, impatient with gradual growth. God s way of restoring things interiorly is much more patient and finally much more effective.

St. Francis Xavier Parish &The Knights of Columbus will once again be hosting the Lenten Fish Fry. This years dates will be February 16th and 23rd, March 2nd, 9th and 23rd. We are seeking volunteers to help with these events. Sign up sheets will be located at the Knights table in the Narthex. Help is needed in all areas from cooking, set up, clean up and serving. Bake goods will also be requested for the dessert table. If you can spare an hour or two, it will be greatly appreciated. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED MEALS on WHEELS Just an hour of your time is needed to deliver hot lunches to seniors in need within the local Joliet & Crest Hill area. 4 Blanket Ministry These blankets are either sewn, quilted, knitted, crocheted or fleece-tied by volunteers who pray while making the blanket. Once completed, a card is attached to the blanket and then blessed by Fr. Karl. The blessed blankets are presented to the recipient(s), letting them know that they remain in our thoughts and prayers even if they cannot be with us at Mass. We are now seeking volunteers to use their time, talent and material to help replenish our supply of blankets. Some material has recently been donated to the ministry for those who can sew or quilt. For those who knit or crochet, there are patterns available for prayer shawls. Marriages: Please contact the parish office at the beginning of your wedding planning to check if your wedding date is available and to start the marriage preparation process. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
