Dear Brothers and Ssters, You do not visit Ireland for the weather, but these last few days in the middle of November have been lovely. This evening we have the wedding rehearsal a much more low key event than in the US. The sun has been shining. Yesterday my brother cut the grass and tided the garden and you would know that there had been lots of rain as the grass was hard to cut because it was so wet. It is a nice time to be here as I connect with people I have not seen in a long time and it is good to be here for a wedding. As we come to the end of the Church year and enter into Advent we are constantly reminded of God's love for us. Family and friends are a reminder that love. We have given thanks and I hope that Thanksgiving was for you a gathering of family and friends with all the usual glitches, but enjoyable nonethe less. Say a prayer for those whose loved ones are far away and in harms way and give thanks. 2 Joliet Catholic Academy On Saturday, December 2, 2017, Joliet Catholic Academy will host its annual Placement Exam for current 8th grade students considering JCA as their choice for high school next fall. Eighth grade students should arrive no later than 7:50 a.m. and enter through the main entrance off of Larkin Avenue. The exam will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students will exit the building at approximately 11:30 a.m. through the south doors, on Ingalls Avenue. Students are asked to bring the $30 exam fee, and two #2 pencils. Calculators are not allowed; scratch paper will be provided for the exam. Prospective students may apply online at placement-exam/ or fill out a paper copy of the Application for Admission and bring it with them on the day of the exam. Get prepared for the exam by attending JCA s Pre-Exam Workshop on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Students will receive a brief overview of the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and have the chance to complete sample test questions. Parents will find out the next steps in the application process and will be given information about course placement. Please park in the main parking lot off Ingalls Avenue and enter through the main entrance facing Larkin Avenue. Please note that students who test on the December 2, 2017 date receive priority for admission, top scorer scholarships, and financial aid. Students who test during the make-up exam or schedule an exam at a later date are ineligible for top scorer scholarships or the Heritage Award. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 12/2 and 12/3 Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. 4 St. Francis Xavier Knights of Columbus Starting the weekend of November 4th and 5th, the Knights of Columbus will have order sheets available for our annual Wreath and Poinsettias sale. Forms will be available at the Knights table located in the Narthex after all the masses. Your purchases will be available for pick up on the weekend of the Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar. Money raised will help us to provide financial support to those in need for the upcoming Christmas season. K of C Ladies Auxiliary All women of our parish are invited to our next meeting January 17, 2018 in the lower level of the church Contact Karen at krea4@comcast.net Elizabeth Ministry This outreach encompasses pregnancy, pregnancy complications, birth, infant or child crisis, fertility and infertility concerns, miscarriage, infant or child death, family life and grand-parenting issues. In the past, family members, neighbors and friends met these needs. Today, our busy lifestyles and constant relocation to new towns, the presence of family or friends may not always be possible during these critical times. Elizabeth Ministry responds to this need by offering like-to-like ministry through personal visits. St. Francis Xavier Knights of Columbus Stop by the Knights table after all the masses to take a chance at $10,000 and a quarter of a cow. The K of C Vocation raffle tickets not only fund vocations for our religious but also support St. Francis Xavier. A portion of the cost of the raffle tickets stays here and is used to fund many activities. The annual Beef Raffle helps us to support many worthwhile charities here in the community. From the Waterleaf Center, to the Newman centers at many colleges here in Illinois, to Right to Life initiatives and the Boy Scouts here in the Diocese. The grand prize is a quarter of a cow and the winner will be drawn at the annual Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar.
