Bags of Hope Bags of Hope fills backpacks with food every week, delivering them to roughly 190 kids right here in Plainfield School District 202 whose families are struggling to make ends meet at home. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 7/7 and 7/8 Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. 2 A Message from Vic Dear Brothers and Sisters, -In 1886, Charles Lwanga lived in what is now Uganda. He worked as a page (a royal attendant) for the King there, and after colonization and evangelization, he converted to Christianity and was baptized a Catholic. The King became enraged when he heard of his conversion and demanded that Lwanga make a terrible choice: either pledge his allegiance to the King instead of to Jesus, or be burned at the stake. Lwanga refused to renounce his faith and the King ordered that Charles Lwanga and all the other newly baptized Catholics be burned alive. Every year, on the feast of his death, an estimated half-million people gather in Namugongo for mass at the Basilica that was built over the place where Lwanga was burned alive. Today, because of that small movement in 1886, he smallest of all the seeds on the earth has become a movement of over 400 million Catholics in Africa. The fastest growing population of Catholics in the world is in Africa. One of the great Church fathers, Tertullian, said that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christianity. Thankfully (hopefully), we are not called to be martyrs, but just like Charles Lwanga, we are all asked to choose between the things of this world, and Jesus Christ. The questions for all of us today are: to whom do we pledge our allegiance, and what seeds are we planting with our lives? Anniversary Mass The Diocese of Joliet will hold its Fortieth Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass On August 26, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Cathedral of St Raymond in Joliet. If you are celebrating either your 25th or 50th anniversary this year, please contact the parish office so that we may submit your name to the Diocese for a formal invitation. Catholic Charities Back to School Fair The 26th Annual Will County Back to School Fair, coordinated by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Joliet Catholic Academy (1200 N. Larkin Avenue) in Joliet. This annual summer event is a major countywide effort to help families who are living on low-incomes access important services to begin the school year on a positive note. Children who attend the fair will receive free medical and dental services; vital information about local programs and services; and a new backpack with school supplies! Each child attending the fair must be accompanied by an adult. Parent/guardian must bring the following items in order to receive supplies and services for their children at the fair: Identification for all household members: Adults: state I.D. or driver s license; passport; Mexican consulate I.D. Children: birth certificate, social security card, medical card, Mexican consulate I.D. Proof of Income: Printouts from: public aid, social security, unemployment, SNAP, link card, check stub, or medical card. We encourage you to register through the simple process of picking up the form in the back of church or by telephoning the office and complete the simple questionnaire. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:(Family Centered Faith Formation) Registration takes place from May through August. Classes begin in September and are held twice a month on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. Marriages: Please contact the parish office at the beginning of your wedding planning to check if your wedding date is available and to start the marriage preparation process. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
