Karl Langsdorf Emergency Line A Message from Our Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters, It s almost Christmas. I have great memories of Christmases past. My mother was a fabulous cook and the older I get the more I realize the great gift she was to all of us. Especially as cakes, puddings and other food were prepared. The traditional food in a lot of Ireland and Britain was usually Goose or Turkey and Ham. In our house it was always Turkey and Ham and all the trimmings. Christmas eve my mother would clean the turkey. It was not a store turkey. It came from her brother s farm so it had to be plucked and cleaned. We got out of the kitchen as none of us liked looking at the turkey s innards. Then the ham was cooked in hard apple cider. When it was nearly cooked it was taken out of the boil and put in a oven dish. Dry mustard, brown sugar or homey was mixed with whiskey and poured over the ham. Then it was scored and cloves were stuck in it. It was finished off in the oven. The first slices would be cut after midnight Mass. Stuffing For the Turkey was made. It was cooked Christmas day. The vegetables, the potatoes had to be cleaned and peeled an put in salted water for the falling day.. The house was an aroma of rich smells as we waited for our father so that the Christmas tree could be decorated, the nativity scene set out. Now all was ready for the celebration. These are happy and sad memories for all are now gone to their heavenly reward, but they remind me of where my faith came from and the efforts that my parents made to make Christmas a time of celebration where faith was the primary reason for the celebration. There were faith stories in the makings of cakes and puddings, in the candle in the window, in the tree and nativity scene. May your Christmas be filled with memories and with faith. Thanks to your generosity, $500 was donated to the LaSalle Veterans Home and over 40 pints of blood were donated. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! THANK YOU Bags of Hope Bags of Hope fills backpacks with food every week, delivering them to roughly 190 kids right here in Plainfield School District 202 whose families are struggling to make ends meet at home. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 1/6 and 1/7. Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. Once completed, a card is attached to the blanket and then blessed by Fr. Karl. The blessed blankets are presented to the recipient(s), letting them know that they remain in our thoughts and prayers even if they cannot be with us at Mass. We are now seeking volunteers to use their time, talent and material to help replenish our supply of blankets. Some material has recently been donated to the ministry for those who can sew or quilt. For those who knit or crochet, there are patterns available for prayer shawls. We encourage you to register through the simple process of picking up the form in the back of church or by telephoning the office and complete the simple questionnaire. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:(Family Centered Faith Formation) Registration takes place from May through August. Classes begin in September and are held twice a month on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. PARISH MINISTRIES: If you would like to join one of our parish ministries (lector, Communion minister, catechists, etc.) please call the office for details. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT is held on Tuesday from 5-8p.m. and on Thursday after the 9:15 am Mass until 10:45a.m. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATIONS: We are delighted to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism & Marriage within our parish for registered families. If you have any questions, please contact our parish office, SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION: Reconciliation: Confessions are every Saturday from 3:30 to 4:15 pm, Wednesday from 5:45 to 6:15 pm and by appt.. Baptisms: Are celebrated on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. Call the church office for open dates. Marriages: Please contact the parish office at the beginning of your wedding planning to check if your wedding date is available and to start the marriage preparation process. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
