2 A Message from Vic Dear Brothers and Sisters, Mary Flannery O Connor was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist who died in Her writing reflected her Roman Catholic faith and frequently examined morality and ethics. Bishop Robert Barron has named her one of the most influential Catholics of the 20 th century. There is a story told of Flannery O Connor about a time when she was invited to a dinner party in New York. Flannery was reportedly shy in social situations, and she really didn t say much at the dinner party until the discussion turned to her Catholic faith and the Eucharist. One woman at the party said that the Eucharist was a powerful symbol of God. Flannery O Connor locked her gaze on the woman and replied, If it s just a symbol, then I say to hell with it. What Flannery O Connor meant was that symbols can be created and manipulated. But if it is a sacrament, then, it s nothing less than the breaking through of God himself into our everyday lives. St. Thomas Aquinas said that the Eucharist is Christ himself. If Aquinas is correct, and if the Eucharist is Christ himself, and if Christ is really, truly and substantially present, his body, blood, soul and divinity, then why would you ever look for meaning somewhere else? Vic Bags of Hope Bags of Hope fills backpacks with food every week, delivering them to roughly 190 kids right here in Plainfield School District 202 whose families are struggling to make ends meet at home. St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 12/1 & 12/2Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. The Knights of Columbus will begin their annual Wreaths and Poinsettias sale the first weekend of November. Beef and Vocation Raffle ticket sales will also continue thru the month of November. So, stop by the Knights table to pick up your order form and purchase your tickets. Thank you for helping us to help the community. Without you, it would not be possible. The Knights of Columbus have both Vocation and Beef Raffle tickets available at the Knights table after all the masses. Last year, a St. Francis Xavier parishioner was a $2500 winner. We encourage you to register through the simple process of picking up the form in the back of church or by telephoning the office and complete the simple questionnaire. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:(Family Centered Faith Formation) Registration takes place from May through August. Classes begin in September and are held twice a month on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. PARISH MINISTRIES: If you would like to join one of our parish ministries (lector, Communion minister, catechists, etc.) please call the office for details. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT is held on Tuesday from 5-8p.m. and on Thursday after the 9:15 am Mass until 10:45a.m. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATIONS: We are delighted to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism & Marriage within our parish for registered families. If you have any questions, please contact our parish office, SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION: Reconciliation: Confessions are every Saturday from 3:30 to 4:15 pm, Wednesday from 5:45 to 6:15 pm and by appt.. Baptisms: Are celebrated on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. Call the church office for open dates. Marriages: Please contact the parish office at the beginning of your wedding planning to check if your wedding date is available and to start the marriage preparation process. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
