2 A Message from Our Dear Brothers and Sisters, Don t do that in public, and please pass the bread. I was recently out for dinner at a restaurant with friends and I overheard (and oversaw) what led up to the above quote. It appeared as though a grade-school aged child was attempting to make the sign of the cross and pray before dinner, but his older brother was embarrassed by the gesture. It was mildly amusing, but the truth is, I too have been reluctant to pray in a restaurant. Perhaps it seems inappropriate to pray in public, or perhaps it s because we are afraid of offending others, or perhaps we are afraid of looking like Jesus-freaks. But consider this quote from Marianne Williamson: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It s not just in some of us; it s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. So let your light shine. Eat, drink and be merry just remember to bless yourself, and the Lord s gifts, which you are about to receive, from His bounty, through Christ our Lord Amen! Who knows? St. Francis Xavier is collecting food on 5/5 and 5/6. Canned vegetables, canned fruits, macaroni and cheese, pasta, rice, instant oatmeal, cereals, cereal bars, canned soups, ramen noodles, peanut butter, jelly, hot cocoa, canned pasta sauce, tomatoes, canned pastas (ie: Spaghetti O s), canned chili, beans, canned pasta sauce, canned tuna, canned chicken, and individual snacks such as granola bars, fruit chews, snacks, pudding, applesauce, cookies, crackers, chips, raisins, and cheese and crackers. Together we can end hunger in our own community. Baby food, diapers, formula, onesies, toys and monetary donations will be accepted and appreciated. We cannot accept car seats or strollers. A playpen will be set up in the Narthex by the Knights table. Thank you for all you do. Are you a Cornhole player? Well if you are or just want to join us for a fun afternoon, the SFX Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Bags tournament on Sunday, June 24th. Mark your calendars. More information to follow. Proceeds will go to the Pavilion fund. Did you ever think about becoming a Knight? Do you wish to join us on our journey to help the Parish and our community? Just stop by the Knights table after mass and we can answer any questions you may have. On May 2nd, the St. Francis Xavier Knights of Columbus Council #14283 will be celebrating our 11th anniversary of being chartered. Once completed, a card is attached to the blanket and then blessed by Fr. Karl. The blessed blankets are presented to the recipient(s), letting them know that they remain in our thoughts and prayers even if they cannot be with us at Mass. We are now seeking volunteers to use their time, talent and material to help replenish our supply of blankets. Some material has recently been donated to the ministry for those who can sew or quilt. For those who knit or crochet, there are patterns available for prayer shawls. 4 SCRIP Scrip is sold after every mass. Please make Scrip part of your monthly gas or grocery budget. Stop by the Scrip table for more information on ordering. We encourage you to register through the simple process of picking up the form in the back of church or by telephoning the office and complete the simple questionnaire. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:(Family Centered Faith Formation) Registration takes place from May through August. Classes begin in September and are held twice a month on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. PARISH MINISTRIES: If you would like to join one of our parish ministries (lector, Communion minister, catechists, etc.) please call the office for details. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT is held on Tuesday from 5-8p.m. and on Thursday after the 9:15 am Mass until 10:45a.m. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATIONS: We are delighted to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism & Marriage within our parish for registered families. Baptisms: Are celebrated on Sunday after the 10:00 am Mass. Call the church office for open dates. Marriages: Please contact the parish office at the beginning of your wedding planning to check if your wedding date is available and to start the marriage preparation process. A minimum of six(6) months in advance of your wedding date is a requirement of the Joliet diocese. Weddings are celebrated at Noon or 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Quinceanara Must contact the parish 3 months prior to the requested date RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults): For adults interested in becoming Catholic, RCIA prepares them to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. Adult Catholics in need of Confirmation are also invited. The formal program meets weekly from October through May.
