After Kresge was bult, there was a draatc rse n student perforng art groups The Student Center offers opportuntes for usc, graphc arts, publcatons, servce groups - the students wll have to coplete the lst of possbltes. The experent Yesterday's student-drected events, the concert and the dance, were an attept to deonstrate the buldng's possbltes. Were they successful? That depends on our readers' reactons. The concert was cold; the dance was crowded. But was t all worth the $2, spent by the student governent? f so, there ght be ore such occasons. To our nds, one of the happest oents of the day was seeng "Doc" Edgerton and hs wfe jonng n the Mexcan Hat Dance at the Saturday seforal. Do the rest of the faculty, we wonder, realze the potental of the buldng - what? or how uch we undergraduates enjoy havng professors there to talk to or just to have a good te together? One of our letters today ndcates that soe professors have concern for the extracurrcular educaton of students as the leaders of toorrow. Let the not overlook the nforal, personal contacts possble n the new buldng. The burden Now we ust ask for a deonstraton of that student sprt whch akes the undreaed of the nevtable. Now that the llustrous class of '69 has been provded wth leaders, t's hgh te they got started on that -. ost enjoyable of pastes, defeatng the sophoores. Before the fray s joned, the ground rules should be explaned. Feld day s ore than an opportunty to have a good fght and deonstrate class sprt though t s that, too. What coes before. the event n the way of organzaton, councaton, and sportsanshp wll be ore portant to the class n the long run. Organzaton, the freshen wll fnd, s the key to effcent capus actvty. Delegatng responsblty s as portant as acceptng t; knowng where to go and who to see for dfferent servces s essental. All later class events, fro the sale of beaver pns to Junor Pro, depend on ths organzaton. Councaton s especally vtal to the freshen on Feld Day - t s a generally accepted fact that when the freshen do wn, t s through sheer force of nubers. Thus they are taught early the value of callng on the support of the dorns and all of the fraterntes. The fnancal success of any a later venture wll depend on the wholesale backng of the class. Thngs had becoe easy for declarer, who cashed the kngs of clubs and hearts and led the last trup fro the board. Declarer could hold hs losses n the trup sut to two trcks, regardless of how East plays, n all, West held declarer's losses to two trups, a ruff, and two sde aces. West's frst error was a stake on two counts. Frst, the ruff dd not hurt declarer, because he was able to throw a losng heart on the ruffed trck and save hs kng for a daond dscard. The nportance of the daond dscard was that one of duy's sall trups could be saved n order to fnesse trups. The second reason that the ruff was wrong was that West endplayed hself by gettng nto the lead. Ether a club return or a daond lead would gve up a trck. West's second error was even ore nexcusable. Evdently, West never learned that the sae tck cannot be gven up twce. 7 Vetna To the Edtor: Next Frday and Saturday wll see the unversty county of Boston - ndeed, of the naton and the world - return to an express concern wth the devastatng and protracted war n Vetna. That the TV screens show t to us week by week deadens the shock, but does not lessen the evl. Aercans are heavly engaged by land, sea and ar n an Asan war; t s a war whose lts are far fro clear, a war whch ght yet drectly nvolve even those fortunate young Aercans deferred fro the draft - not to enton us old-ters, who can stll, n ths knd of war, send young en off to de, to kll, and to destroy. Next week s an occason both for serous dscusson of how we cae there and what we ght do, and for a deonstraton of personal protest. We urge every MT student to consder carefully and earnestly hs responsblty to hear, to learn, and to speak out. The detals of the Boston area partcpaton n the nternatonal Protest Days on Vetna, October 15th and 16th, are avalable at a booth n the lobby of buldng 1. Let us ake our vew perfectly clear. MT students represent as lkely a saple of the leadershp of the Aercan scentfc, ndustral and poltcal coplex of a couple of decades hence as we can agne. The events of the last years, not least of the the terrble tangle of Vetna tself, ake t crystal clear that such leadershp wll requre poltcal and oral nsght and cotent, not to be replaced by coputers or anageent skll or quantu physcs or group dynacs. Not only as young ctzens, elgble to fght f not to vote, not only, as students wth. an ear for deas and a yen to speak out, but as the en and woen who wll have to lve n the world Vetna brngs, you can fnd a relevant and proper place n the weekend's actvtes. Ths pece s exctng and extreely dffcult to play, but the audence enjoyed hs perforance of t ensely. After the ntersson Heller played the conteporary porton of hs progra. Hndeth's 'Sonate H' was an nterestng study n tonalty, and - Heller put hs best effort of the evenng nto ths work. Last on the progra was Reger's 'Fantasy and Fugue n D nor,' a strkng contrast to Bach's Fantasy and Fugue played earler; Heller's perforance was a wld dsplay of keyboard technque cobned wth artstc perfecton. nfortunately the perforance was slghtly arred by dry reverberatons, and the falar tckng that occurs when certan low notes of the Kresge Holtkap Organ are played. f ths organ s supposed to ake ths sound, t s certanly a new concept n organs. t would be nce to see soethng done about ths. Such esson s far too weak and unfor to ft the observatons. As a result, such exotc theores as gant thunder stors and nteractons wth the bursts of solar plasa, whch sal through the solar syste, have been proposed and not as yet dscarded Although no copletely satsfactory theory has been devsed, one large contrbuton towards ths end has been ade. One research scentst had a theory that the oon affected eteors whch n turn affected ranfall on earth. Because of ts twelve oons, he turned to Jupter to check one aspect'of hs theory. Prof. Warwc lent h hs data. When the scentst returned, he had coe wth a startlng correlaton between the poston of o, the ffth galelan oon, and the ntensty of the sgnal. As to the ranfall eteor theory, the results were entrely nlo Ths correlaton s however uch a ystery as the clue. now reans for the years of search ahead to explan o's ton at a dstance n addton the other curous aspects of pter's rado esson.
