Cocors s orgnally from Pensacola, Florda, where hs famly moved after emgratng from Greece. He graduated from Tennessee Temple College, where he and Presdent Dr. Paul Dxon met. He s marred to the former Judy Eaves of Chattanooga. They have three chldren. Cocors receved hs master s n theology from Dallas Theologcal Semnary, where he s now an ulmct professor. He was vce presdent of the evangelcal organzaton EvanTell for fve years whle he was n Dallas. Cocors s an exceptonally gfted communcator, accordng to Dxon, and s very popular wth college-age audences across the country. A testmony to hs popularty s the fact that Dxon had to reserve ths engagement two years ago. Says Dxon, Wth a man of hs popularty we have to make arrangements at least that early. Cocors has travelled throughout the country speakng to adults and young people n churches, n areawde crusades, at youth ralles, and on hgh school and college campuses. He was last at Cedarvlle for the 1981 Fall Bble Conference. Future speakers nclude Joseph Stowell III for the 86 Fall Bble conference, ex-sovet labor camp prsoner Georg Vns and ABWE drector Norman Ncholas for the wnter of 1987, and Dave Hockng s scheduled for the sprng of Davd Burnham wll be here for the fall of 1987, and Warren Wersbe s scheduled to return for the 1988 Sprng Enrchment Week. Chrs Reese scores two of hs ten ponts n last Saturday s NAIA playoff game. The Jackets defeated Ro Grande and advanced to Fndlay. However, Fndlay won Monday s double-overtme thrller, , elmnatng Cedarvlle from NAIA competton. The NCCAA tournament now les ahead for Cedarvlle. The Jackets host Maron College and, should they wn, they wll play ether Grace College or Mt. Vernon.

3 2 Cedars - March 6,1986 Frendly skes grow dark by Tam Emers Assgnng Edtor For many students sprng break means flyng. Whether a frequent flyer or not, a sudden erk n the plane s moton or a shft n ar currents can cause one to reflect upon the safety of the arplane. In a perod when ar fataltes are rapdly mountng, ar safety flls the mnds of many. As a record number of travelers have taken to the skes, the number of plane crashes has also rsen sharply. Last year was the worst year for arplane crashes n avaton hstory. The Jan. 13 ssue of Tme reports that nearly 2,000 people ded n arplane crashes n Reports of crashes have domnated the headlnes. In August, a Japenese 747 crashed nto a mountan, kllng 520: Investgators are stll speculatng what caused ths largest sngle-plane crash n avaton hstory^ The lst of ar fataltes contnued wth' a Delta L-1011 crashng n Dallas and kllng 134. In Ireland an Ar Inda 747 crashed, kllng 329. And n December a DC-8 brought 248 U.S. solders to ther deaths. These ncdents represent only a porton of the fatal crashes n the past year. In an age of ncreasng technology, ths ncrease n ar casualtes s the opposte of what one would expect. Ths unusual outbreak of plane dsasters has rased questons n the mnds of many travelers. Some experts are merely callng the outstandng number of crashes a concdence and statstcal aberraton. As John Enders, presdent of the Flght Safety Foundaton, states, It s a knd of fluke, a confluence of a lot of thngs. There sn t any sngle thng one can pont to and say, Ah, here s a new trend. In support of ths vew arlnes quckly pont to ther past safety record. Accordng to Tme, arlnes n the western world have had only 138 ftal accdents n the past 25 years. Even wth tu uprse of Butcher reached out n mnstry By now all o f us are well aware o f the tragc events that transpred on the afternoon o f February 18. We mourn the death o f senor Jay Butcher, whose lfe was taken n an automoble accdent. Hs death cane ust 48 hours pror to the prntng o f the last Cedars, and we regret that we were unable to cover the story n that ssue. However, we also felt that an nformatve report n ths ssue would be both untmely and unnecessary. What we have opted to do s to show a sde o f Jay o f whch many were not aware. The follow ng story s beng reprnted from the March 7, 1985 ssue o f Cedars. As we reflect on hs death, let us also remember the work that he dd whle he was alve. Jcv Butcher (Hutto by K. James) by Krsten E. Stagg None of us havng a free weekend magne ourselves drvng an hour and a half to spend t runnng a home for uvenle delnquents. But that s exactly what unor pre-semnary maor Jay Butcher does. Every Frday after classes, Butcher drves to Bellefontane to assume charge at the Champagn- Logan County Youth Resdental Treatment Center where up to sx boys between the ages of 12 and 18 are housed. He takes care of the home -as well as supervsng recreatonal actvtes and meals for the resdents. In an atmosphere of Chrstcentered love and understandng dscplne, the center seeks to gude these chldren wth troubled backgrounds nto acceptable patterns of behavor rather than send them to a detenton home. The youth center s present drector, Tom Wedge, graduated from Cedarvlle last year wth a Bble comprehensve maor. Wedge s past experence and broken home/columbus ghetto background enable hm to have an unusual rapport wth the resdents, many of whom have had dentcal stuatons. Wedge s frm but far dscplne enables the boys to have emotonal stablty and to operate wthn some sort of bounds. Rules nclude no smokng or swearng; grlfrends are restrcted to the lvng room, dnng room, and study areas; and helpng wth household chores s a must. Resdents are allowed to go to ther own homes for weekends for good behavor, and ths s encouraged whenever possble. Butcher s also able to have some nput n wtnessng. Whle he does not solct the Gospel, he s ready and able to answer questons that the resdents may pose as to hs and Wedge s fath. Exposure to the Word of God through semnars, regular Sunday church servces, Chrstan lterature and workers at the youth center provde the boys wth a challenge to consder Chrst serously., Workng at the Champagn- Logan County Youth Resdental Treatment Center has proved to be an eye-openng experence for Butcher to see how the other half lves, whle provdng an opportunty to share the message of Chrst and Hs love to those who so desperately want to be apprecated. crashes, ar travel s 100 tmes safer than travellng n a car. Secor Browne, former charman of the Cvl Aeronautcs Board, refers to flyng as the safest mode of transportaton. Tme adds that the chances of pershng n an arplane crash are 1 n 600,000. But consderng that ths statstc has dramatcally rsen from 1 n 3.7 mllon n 1984, the ncrease seems too severe to attrbute to mere concdence. What rsks do travelers take when they fly, and could these rsks be elmnated wth proper care? The numerous crashes of the past year have prompted experts to closely examne these questons. Although the accdents appear to have few common tes, experts are examnng several possble causes. Many crtcs blame deregulaton of arplanes for the clmbng number of plane crashes. Deregulaton refers to reducng government regulatons on arcrafts. Recent deregulaton has prompted more ar traffc. Tme reports that 30,000 flghts travel across the U.S. every day. Wth ths 10% ncrease n the number of arcrafts over the past seven years, some fear too many arcrafts have crowded the sky. Donald Engen, Chef of the Federal Avaton Admnstraton, states, We are begnnng to wonder whether economc deregulaton may have led to mantenance practces that would ustfy certan fears." Although studes have centered on deregulaton and related aspects, nvestgators have also consdered the personnel of arlnes. Plot qualfcatons have dropped as the ncrease n travelers has prompted a need for more plots. In addton, ar controllers are stll feelng the effects of the 1981 strke when Presdent Reagan fred the maorty of controllers. Arports now have 13% fewer ar controllers than before the strke, and only 57% of these controllers are consdered fully qualfed. As Chrstans, we frequently fght government control, but perhaps we need more government control n some of these areas. Consderng the prelmnary results of nvestgatons, Ender evaluated the stuaton correctly n part. No sngle factor has caused the recent outbreak of plane dsasters. But nstead of callng the startlng number of recent arplane crashes a fluke, nvestgators should realze that perhaps a combnaton of the factors has caused the dramatc rse n arplane casualtes. Unless future nvestgatons consder the nteracton among the factors, the current deteroraton of ar safety may contnue. In addton to possble overcrowdng of the sky, the rapd growth of ar traffc may have nspred many arlnes to neglect proper mantenance of ther equpment and to push ther planes beyond reasonable lmts. 4 Phlppne electon settled March 6, Cedars 3 by Jm Lebler Less than a week after a questonable electon vctory, Ferdnand Marcos found hmself to be a presdent wthout a country. In the mdst of ncreasng cvl unrest, Marcos fled hs natve land n favor of asylum n the Unted States. The new presdent s the wdow of a former popular protest leader who was murdered upon hs return to the Phlppnes three years ago. Corazon Aquno, housewfe turned poltcan, was ready to move her peaceful regme nto the confnes of the governmental palace n Gandh-lke fashon. The topplng of Marcos dctatorshp after two decades of rule over the sland country came on the heels of wdespread electon fraud and charges that Marcos had rgged the vctory for hmself. Reports had come n that mllons of ballots already marked for Marcos had been placed n the pollng boxes pror to the actual electon. A. delegaton of Congressmen from the Unted States, sent to the Phlppnes to oversee the electon process remaned unconvnced that the electons had been far and mpartal. SOOOSOOOOOOOOOSOOOOOOOQOC On nauguraton day, both Aquno and Marcos were sworn n as presdent: Marcos by the chef ustce of the Phlppne Supreme Court, Aquno by a rebel assstant court ustce. sooooooooooosoooooooooooo Senate Foregn Relatons Commttee Charman Rchard Lugar returned wth shock over what he had wtnessed n the electon process. Other accounts confrmed that practces such as denyng entre towns of ther vote totals, mproper sealng of result envelopes and ballot-box stuffng were wdespread. The protest was so loud that several complants were lodged aganst Marcos n the Natonal Assembly of the Phlppnes, responsble for confrmng the vote totals and proclamng the new presdent for the sx-year term. In a demonstraton aganst Marcos, several members of the assembly marched out, leavng only those forces loyal to Marcos to actually count and confrm the ballots. The result was a narrow vctory for Marcos by a lttle more than 5%. Aquno, meanwhle, remaned optmstc that publc opnon could sweep her nto power. Even as Marcos prepared for hs Proper study methods requre good habts SAN DIEGO, CA (CPS) - It wasn t unusual to come across Patty Randolph oggng, stockngfooted, n the lades room ust before an exam. As a student, Randolph ogged to gve her bran an oxygen boost for the test. Now, as a developmental psychology lecturer for San Dego State, she passes along smlar study and test-takng tps to her own students. Studyng s a knd of hoopumpng event, Randolph says. There are certan sklls you can develop that wll put you a few grade ponts hgher. It can mean the dfference between a B + and a A or a C + and a B, she adds. Keepng the bran stmulated durng an exam s as mportant as keepng the rest of your body relaxed, she advses. Randolph recommends drnkng frut uce durng an exam to mantan the bran s glucose level. When you receve the exam paper, she suggests puttng t asde, closng your eyes and clearng your mnd. Take a deep breath and relax; concentrate on how much you know and don t worry about what you don't know. Be postve, she says. Randolph says students sometmes psyche themselves out on exams to the pont where ther completed test doesn t reflect ther actual knowledge. Keepng your body n good shape pror to an exam usually helps the bran stay actve, too. How well you thnk s reflectve of how your body s dong, she says. She recommends eatng frut, nstead of candy bars, for energy, because t makes you feel better physcally, and feelng postve s a must for dong well on a test. Randolph compled her study tps from fellow faculty members, counselng center resources, and students attendng study workshops she conducted at Texas Chrstan Unversty. She says freshman n partcular need study tps because they don t realze the mportance of studyng as a regular habt. They also have the added burden of tranng other people to respect ther study habts; to have other people accept ther studyng. If a student s afrad of the materal, he needs to have a talk wth hmself and start wth hs hardest subects frst, when he s freshest, she advses. But f he s absolutely paranod, start wth the easest subects to renforce confdence! But can you study too much? Yes, she says, f extra studyng means skmpng on sleep. It s okay to make trade-offs on sleep versus study, dependng on how well you know your body. Cut down on sleep f you know you can stll operate well, she advses. There s no pont to beng so exhausted you aren t able to say what you know on an exam.. For some students, however, the nght before the test s spent not revewng nforrhaton, but learnng f for the frst tme. Such crammng, Randolph says, s a waste of tme. If you ve never put the materal n before, you re not gong to get t out durng the exam. 10% dscount to students wth I.D. 2Qt2 &Lmestone S. Sprngfeld, Oho nauguraton, events were unfoldng that made ths swearng-n ceremony seem all the more unlkely. Defense Mnster Juan Ponce Enrle and Lt. Gen. Fdel Ramos both resgned to on the ranks of the mutny wellng up n the country. In effect, Marcos had lost the support of the wealthy elte and the core of the mltary. Even hs chef of staff and most loyal supporter, Gen. Faban Ver (who had been renstated after charges that he had plotted to kll Bengno Aquno) was teeterng n hs allegance to the crppled leader. The Unted States, caught n the unenvable poston of supportng an old ally to avod the loss of a strategc mltary ally, decded the corazon aquno safest thng to do would be to call for the resgnaton of Marcos and offer hm poltcal asylum n the Unted States. A Whte House statement cted favorably the efforts of the two defectors and sad that n the face of electon fraud perpetrated overwhelmngly by the rulng party, the legtmacy and credblty of the Marcos regme had been severely undermned. Despte ntal resstance to the offer, Marcos was forced to S K y V g h r S t u d o ^. U m e s r o n e. Y ew ow ( M 3 ) accept. Rebel forces took over one of the two televson statons n the Phlppnes. They held a key mltary outpost n Camp Agunaldo. Although they were outnumbered publc sentment was clearly n ther favor as 20,000 people lned up n front of the rebellous troops to protect them from shootng at government forces. On nauguraton day, both Marcos and Aquno were sworn n as presdent: Marcos by the chef ustce of the Phlppne Supreme Cdurt, Aquno by a rebel assstant court ustce. However, as hordes of angry Aquno supporters surrounded the Presdental Palace, t became clear that Marcos would have to leave or face open cvl war or possble assassnaton. The addtonal securty around Marcos was not suffcent. Under the pressure of a tumblng regme, Marcos chose to accept the offer gven to hm to leave the country n safety. As of ths wrtng, Marcos has fled to the U.S. Ar Force base n the Phlppnes where he s watng to be transported wth hs famly to Hawa. It appears, for now at least, that the sweepng away of Marcos s complete and that a new era s about to begn under the presdency of Corazon Aquno.'

5 4 Cedars - March 6,1986 Internshps provde experence by Joanne Maor Cedarvlle College offers students the opportunty to partcpate n nternshps related fo ther feld of study. Presently, students wth maors n poltcal scence, psychology, busness admnstraton, hstory, pre-law, publc admnstraton, communcaton arts and Englsh have receved nternshps. Cedarvlle College, through nternshps, encourages students to become more than ust observers. The student s relatvely solated from the real work world whle he remans n the classroom. Internshps brdge that gap between college and the busness world, gvng a sample of a career wthout a permanent ob commtment. An nternshp s a short term employment opportunty n the feld of a student s maor or nterest. It s a lmted commtment, usually lastng a quarter wth no oblgaton for future employment. Internshps provde a chance to partcpate n and observe the professonal world. They help the student to determne whch career nterests hm the most. They also furnsh on-the-ob experence, tranng, and references whch make future ob searches easer, allowng the student to advance n a tght ob market. Internshps offer experence that many obs requre but cannot provde. In some nstances, they lead to permanent postons after graduaton. The socal scence department offers nternshps to students who request them. Two of the nne maors wthn the department, crmnal ustce and publc admnstraton, requre an nternshp for graduaton. Internshps for the other departments are optonal. In order to receve an nternshp for hstory, poltcal or socal scence, the student must submt a proposal to the professor n the student s feld of study requestng an nternshp. The department then determnes whether or not the student receves an nternshp on the bass of what s requred n the nternshp and on the bass of the student s needs, such as the number of credt hours needed to graduate. Dr. Murray Murdoch, charman of the socal scence department, states that nternshps gve the student hands-on experence n hs area of study. Students n the feld of socal scence have receved nternshps n chldren s homes, geratrc centers, and homes for the mentally retarded. Many other students have partcpated n nternshps that nvolve them n poltcs. The department has a lst of congressmen who are eager to have students ntern under them. But the department wll work wth students to contact the congressman from ther home states to set up nternshps also. Internshps have expanded not only to congressonal postons but also to state and local government postons. Many students have worked wth Oho representatve Mke Dewne n Washngton as well as other representatves. Ths past summer, senor Scott Zmpfer, a communcatons maor and poltcal scence mnor from New Holland, New York, nterned for Representatve Jack Kemp of New York. Hs sx-week nternshp was dvded nto two parts: half workng n Washngton, D.C. and the other half workng n Buffalo, N.Y. Zmpfer was one of seven students pcked from 50 applcatons. Last sprng he worked n the Sprngfeld offce wth Representatve DeWne. My work wth Representatve DeWne was answerng consttuent mal, Zmpfer states. My nternshp wth Representatve Kemp nvolved lason work between Consttuents wth problems and government agences that could solve the problems. Zmpfer added that the opportunty he had to meet Howard Baker and Wllam F. Buckley, Jr. hghlghted Hs summer. Zmpfer, who plans to attend law school upon graduaton, sad that the nternshp gave me the opportunty to see the world as t really s. It has also gven me personal contacts that mght ad me n the future. All the departments at Cedarvlle College that offer nternshps clam that the frst obectve s to gve students hands-on experence n the feld n whch they plan to pursue a career. It gves them a taste of what ther ob after graduaton wll be lke. Sherry Watson, a senor Englsh maor wth an emphass n techncal wrtng s presently dong a techncal wrtng nternshp at Greene Memoral Hosptal n Xena. She works n the publc relatons department wth the hosptal s communcatons specalst. Her responsbltes nclude typng, dstrbutng brochures throughout the hosptal and wrtng hosptal newsletter artcles. Presently she has. the opportunty to propose an emergency treatment consent form to school nurses and club presdents throughout Greene County. Ths proposal wll allow parental approved adults other than parents to gve permsson for approved medcal treatment to a mnor n a case n whch the parents cannot be reached. Watson states, Ths nternshp gves me hands-on experence n publc relatons. It s a transton from the classroom out to the ob poston. It has been a very proftable experence for me. Watson plans to use her Englsh and techncal wrtng n a career n publc relatons upon graduaton. 6 Faculty pursue by Terr Huber The pursut of excellence s more than a motto at Cedarvlle College. The school s faculty have nternalzed ths prncple as they search for ways to'gve students the best educaton possble. Twenty-two faculty members are presently nvolved n graduate programs. These ndvduals have chosen to pursue further educaton n order to keep on top of ther specalzed felds. By dong ths they wll be better able to educate and drect students. Robert Parr, asst. prof, of socology, has completed all but the dssertaton of hs Ph.D. n socology at Oho State Unversty. When Parr oned the Cedarvlle faculty, he agreed to study beyond hs master s degree and complete a doctorate program. He apprecates the program because t expands hs awareness of socology. Part of the academc excellence s beng-the best I can be n my feld. A doctorate (degree) wll assst me n ths, Parr emphaszes. He feels hs students wll beneft because he s able to pass along hs ncreased knowledge. Parr s Dave Ormsbee, drector o f admssons, s pursung a marketng degree (Photo by R. James) studes help hm reman current and stay updated on new and recent developments n the feld. Teachng classes as well as attendng them s not an easy task to accomplsh, acknowledges Parr. The long-run goals [of pursung my Ph.D.] are benefcal, but the short-term results cause you to work at cross purposes, he explans. Parr feels that a doctorate s essental to a college professor of socal scences, but he s frustrated when hs educatonal pursut uses the tme he needs to prepare for hs classes. Parr plans hs tme carefully n order to on n on famlv actvtes Sovet belevers poston cted n The Last Chrstan March 6, Cedars 5 degrees and complete assgnments. He apprecates the efforts hs wfe and chldren make to ad hm n the fulfllment of hs goal. Dave Ormsbee, drector of admssons, recently enrolled n a master s degree program at Syracuse Unversty. Hs s an ndependent study program that allows hm to complete hs assgnments out of class. He chose Syracuse because the flexble program n busness admnstraton has an excellent reputaton and fts well nto hs schedule. Ormsbee chose to enter the program because he feels he should be the best I can be. One way to be the best s to keep up. I want to buld on my background n busness. He s focusng hs studes on marketng and s excted about how he can use hs newly-attaned knowledge. Hs course work wll brng hm n contact wth up-to-date nformaton on busness and management. Ormsbee beleves that by developng and deepenng hs understandng of busness he wll be able to make better decsons for the college. Actng as an advsor to undeclared students, hs new nsght nto busness wll help hm drect these students. Ormsbee shares wth Parr the frustraton ot dvded responsbltes. The Last Chrstan s my opnon, my mpresson of a tme that changed my lfe forever," states Tmothy Chmykhalov of hs recently publshed book. Not ntended as a comprehensve statement of hs four years and nne months n the Amercan Embassy basement n Moscow watng for emgraton permsson. The Last Chrstan accomplshes two purposes. Frst, Chmykhalov records some of the growth and changes he experenced durng hs years n the embassy. Only sxteen years old when he entered the embassy, Chmykhalov s lfe was radcally altered through hs four year ordeal. Second, the book nforms the Western world of the relgous persecuton occurrng n the Sovet Unon. Ths problem has been largely gnored by the meda, and many are unaware of a problem. Wth hs book, Chmykhalov attempts to shed lght on the present plght of Chrstans n ths athestc country. Snce Englsh s not hs natve language, Chmykhalov s asssted by Danny Smth n hs wrtng. Although easly read, the style s sometmes too smple, wth short, choppy sentences. The employment of questons to create suspense throughout the narratve s somewhat overused, almost nterruptng the flow of the book at ponts. Snce he dd not ntend to wrte an exhaustve account of hs confnement n the embassy, the chronology occasonally appears dsonted and the choce of llustratons a bt haphazard. In spte of ts techncal weaknesses, The Last Chrstan s worthwhle readng. It gves a pcture of those four and a half years of lfe n the embassy whch wll be nterestng for those who followed the story of the Sberan Seven n the news. A strength n the book les n ts well-documented asserton that relgous persecuton contnues to floursh n the Sovet Unon. Ctng such works as Lenn s ABC o f Communsm and hs Socalsm anh Relgon, Chmykhalov clearly establshed the ant-relgous phlosopy of the Communst party. Quotng from human rghts agreements already made by the Sovet government such as the Unted Natons Unversal Declaraton of Human Rghts and the Helsnk Fnal Act, Chmykhalov makes t clear that dalogue wth the Sovet government s useless wthout the enforcement of already exstng agreement. He gves many examples of the volaton of those rghts, supplyng documentaton for these as well. Emphaszng hs personal growth as a result of the embassy experence, Chmykhalov clarfes that the four years and nne months he spent n the embassy basement have left hm wth no regrets. Rather, he passes on what he learned there n the form of a challenge to the Western world: not to forget those strugglng for freedom n Communst countres. New York I Team I by Lsa Fawcett Sxteen Cedarvlle students wll be headng to New York Cty over sprng break. Ths year, a group called the Often Ar Campagners nvted Cedarvlle to send a team to New York. The group has opened ther buldng, the Fellowshp Deaconry, n whch Cedarvlle students wll stay. Ths buldng s actually n New Jersey, rght across the rver from New York Cty, and students wll rde nto the cty every mornng. The team s mnstry wll focus prmarly on street evangelsm, workng wth the Open Ar Campagners. Junor Jeff Leach, the team s leader, descrbed a typcal wtnessng stuaton: Whle one of the campagners s makng a pantng or chalk drawng, a crowd wll assemble to lsten.- The campagners wll present a clear gospel message, and Cedarvlle students wll blend nto the crowd, watchng for anyone who seems to respond. Team members wll pray wth people who want to make decsons, gve them lterature, and drect them to a Bble-belevng church n the area. Leach emphaszed, We ve got to dscple the people who make decsons. That s so mportant. Ths year the New York team conssts of fve men and eleven women: Aprl Augustus, Nathan Bell, Wendy Bell, Lan Borgman, Chrs Dal, Mark Huebscher, Mary Jones, Beth Mller, Paul Muckley, Meredth Stener, Kevn Tupps, Mary Welch, Russ Wght and Molly Wllams. Tupps commented, I ve always wanted to go to New York, and now the Lord has gven me the opportunty to serve Hm and lve my dream at the same tme. In addton to wtnessng on the streets, the team plans to wtness n the subways. Students wll wat for trans n the tunnels, and n the few mnutes between departures, they wll perform smple magc trcks to attract attenton. Once people stop to lsten, students wll then present the gospel, Dal commented on New York sayng, I feel that I see bg ctes as cold, places full of people who don t have needs. I want to get a burden for the people and mnster n a dfferent settng that I ve never experenced before. The team also wll stop at John F. Kennedy Hgh School to wat for classes to end. Pastor Green stated that the man goal of the team s to share the gospel wth as many people as possble. He beleves ths s a good experence for the students. Lynn Calst, a unor, s a member of the team whch conssts of eleven men and eleven women. Calst looks forward to the trp but realzes t wll not be easy. It s gong to be really hard. But t wll be benefcal to my future wtnessng. It wll also be a good experence learnng how to wtness n adverse condtons. Karen Beatte, a senor, has made the trp before and found t worthwhle. I went last year and I thnk t's a really good experence. It exposes you to a totally dfferent lfestyle because you see how students from secular unverstes lve and what ther prortes are. Beatte beleves the team s goals are to expose people to the gospel and to use opportuntes to wtness. Yes, we re gong down there to wtness, but even f souls a t.f t saved we can realze that there s ; need. It also gves you good c' perence n startng conversatons. In addton to makng door-todoor contact wth Mormons, the group wll strve to encourage the teens n the local church n the evenngs. Glenn Nash went on the Utah team last year and s leadng ths year s group n a Bble study every Monday. Monday, March 18, wll be spend wth Pastor Clem explanng the methods of wtnessng and vstng a Mormon temple to see Mormonsm frst-hand. Although Debbe Clem grew up n Utah and has been wtnessng for a long tme, she hopes ths trp wll help her become more effectve n evangelsm. Clem plans to return to Utah as a tentmaker whle teachng n publc school. For Mlls, a unor, the Utah team s her frst experence wth MIS. She became nterested last year durng team presentatons. A twelve-page paper on Mormonsm for Englsh composton also ncreased her awareness and nterest n Mormons. When applcatons were avalable. she completed one because she was curous to see what Mormons are really lke, and [she has] a real desre to wtness to such dedcated people. Nash warns team members to expect responses such as I don t want to talk to you, and Come back when my husband s home. Last year the team made several contacts, and whle none of those contacts made decsons, the mssonares are stll followng-up on them. Clem explans that wnnng Mormons to Chrst can be an extremely long process. Bowen expresses some nervousness about gong to Utah. When I went.to Australa for MIS my man mnstry was sngng. We gave concert after concert, but we had someone to do the preachng for us, whereas n Utah, I wll be responsble for door-to-door evangelsm. It wll be qute a bg dfference. Teasdale mentoned that students wll be workng on roads, rockng culverts, and seedng banks. In addton, they wll help erect a tower for a rado transmtter. Although the nature of Msson Ready s extremely demandng, Chrstan mnstres has accepted applcatons from any student. However, only men have appled, and at ths tme, the team s stll beng chosen. Robey states that the play s controversal because of the ssue of alcoholsm brought out n the play and also the dance routnes, whch are bascally a combnaton of gymnastcs and aerobcs. Lsa Tyson, playng the lead role of Elza Doolttle, says that practces are a great deal of work, but at the same tme are fun. Ty son commented that her character s a challenge to portray, but she feels that the role wll be a steppng stone for further actng. The play wll be presented the frst two weekends of May. 10 March 6, Cedars 9 Mchael shares hometown Elena Mchael prepares A Tree Grows n Brooklyn" for her senor speech rectal. (Photo by Carpenter) by Gary W. Barker Contrbutng Wrter On March 8, 1986, Elena Mchael wll brng a lttle of New York Cty to Cedarvlle as she performs her senor speech rectal, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smth. Mchael, a senor Englsh/ speech/ secondary educaton maor, draws to a close a long hstory of lerformance experence. She has been an actve member of the college forenscs team. A veteran performer, Mchael has had several maor roles n college drama productons ncludng "The Robe, To Kll A Mockngbrd. and Wat Untl Dark. Cedarvlle audences wll most readly remember her portrayal of Amanda Wngfeld n the fall producton of The Glass Menagere. Mchael chose A Tree Grows In Brooklyn for two maor reasons. Frst, she wanted to share a lttle Barker dramatzes Dckens n senor speech rectal of her hometown wth her audence. A natve of Long Island, New YorW Mrhael notre manv dfferences n lfestyle upon her move to Cedarvlle four years ago. She also found many msconceptons about her hometown. She states, So many people vew New York as a cruel, harsh cty. Through my rectal, I hope to show that New York Cty s made up of smple, carng people. Set n the early I900 s A Tree Grows In Brooklyn depcts the lfe of France Nolan from Chldhood to a young adult. The story s seen through the eyes of ths young grl. The audence sees France strugglng wth the realty of a drunkard father as well as tryng to assst her mother support the famly. The tree magery s found as France faces many struggles and yet stll grows and matures. Mchael s second motvaton for choosng ths novel rests n the story s strong moral message. Mchael says, I wanted to do somethng wth meanng somethng that carred a message wth t. Mchael hopes that the audence wll leave havng been mpressed wth the strong lessons of famly fdelty, fath, and perseverance that the story contans. Work on the rectal' began last sprng. Actual cuttng of the scrpt began n September. Cuttng the the scrpt nvolved condensng the four-hundred page novel nto an hour of performance. Mchael found ths aspect the most frustratng. There s so much good materal n the novel. It s frustratng to know that you can t share t all wth your audence. Mchael has rehearsed at least three tmes a week wth her advsor Davd Robey, asst. prof, o f communcaton arts, throughout ths quarter. After graduaton n June and\ marrage n July, Mchael plans to begn a career as a hgh school teacher of speech and drama. She knows that she wll draw heavly upon her rectal experence as she begns to teach and drect plays. The rectal opens by statng, There s a tree that grows n Brooklyn. On Saturday nght, Cedarvlle wll see New Yorker, Elena Mchael, brng that tree and a successful college career to full growth through ths rectal featurng her hometown. by Bruce L. Keslng Contrbutng Wrter Gary Barker n a ont effort wth Charles Dckens wll present hs senor rectal on Saturday, Aprl 5 at 8 p.m. Barker wll employ hs actng abltes to dramatze Dckens mmortal work A Tale o f Two Ctes. Dckens wll supply the words, and Barker wll supply the means to brng them to lfe. Dckens contrbuton to the evenng rests chefly n hs act of publshng the book n The act brought popularty to the French Revoluton among the Englsh speakng peoples. The knowledge that many have of the stormng of the Bastlle, of the death carts, and of the gullotne, comes from Dckens novel. Barker concluded that the energy and passon arsng from the settng would be advantageous for hs purposes. The book exhbts the personalty, style, and vocabulary of Dckens. Several quotes from Dckens work should be especally famlar to the audence. Whle some may not assocate the words wth Dckens, they wll have some measure of famlarty. Ths should not only generate smple recognton but also reduce any fears people may have of a foregn or unntellgble drama. In ths novel Dckens wove an ntrcate plot for whch he remans famous. Employng stuaton rones, hdden denttes, and other devces. Dckens drected the reader down one path only to depost hm n a completely unantcpated destnaton. The characters n ths story possess the complete spectrum of good and bad qualtes and personaltes. Barker wll personfy Sdney Carton, Lucy Manette, and the elusve Madame Defarge. It s here that the efforts of Dckens and Barker wll merge., Dckens has gracously provded the settng, characters, and plot. Barker wll then be called upon to provde the necessary talent and technque to make the evenng a success. Barker s contrbuton to the event began wth an arduous process of selectng the materal. Followng hs decson he began the dffcult task of reducng Dckens manuscrpt to a sze whch could be presented n approxmately one hour. The lmtatons of tme wll permt but a partal presentaton of the work. As a result, Barker pruned, shaved, sheared, abbrevated, deleted, and compressed Dckens masterpece nto a one hour bteszed nugget. Yet, Barker s certan that all essental elements of the plot reman ntact. It remans for Barker, then, to develop hs characters and employ the necessary stage technques to brng the story to lfe. Barker wll present hs senor rectal n partal fulfllment of the requrements for the communcaton arts maor, although t could be substtuted wth a research paper. He chose the former because t s more n keepng wth hs career plans whch ultmately nclude teachng drama and theater at the collegate level. Whle the audence watches Barker perform, they wll be lstenng to the words of Dckens. Yet, as the audence hears the words, Ts a far, far better thng that I do, than I have ever done, they may truly wonder who s speakng. tune-ups mufflers shocks brakes complete automotve servce u 9J Homemade Ice Cream Baked Goods Sanduuches Open 24 hrs Sprngfeld-Xena Rd. Senors Walter, Norm Cox, and Steve Cremean, who led the team n 85 battng.325, wll provde the Jackets wth valuable leadershp. It has to be a team effort, says Coomes. We re stll a young team as far as baseball knowledge goes. The season wll depend on our defense and ptchng. Defense s ntegral to the Jackets as they were ranked sxth n the naton n that category last year. Ths year, the team must have a well executed offense, ncludng buntng and stealng. Coomes cted three players he expects to mprove and do well ths season. Lamar Efert, who dd not play last season, should provde added strength n the outfeld. Bran Marburger, who saw lmted playng tme last season, wll play thrd base when he s not relevng Rachel of the catchng dutes. Coomes also mentoned Ken Horton, an outfelder who was nelgble to play last year because of the rules concernng transfer players. The Yellow Jacket baseball season opens on Mar. 18 when the Jackets partcpate n a tournament n Cocoa Beach, Florda over sprng break. The Jackets wll play eght games n four days aganst teams that are consstently strong. Ths schedule may be the toughest a Cedarvlle College baseball team has ever had to play, sad Coomes. Last year, the Jackets played several games that dd not count for dstrct rankngs. Ths season every game wll count; therefore, the Jackets must break the school record for most wns n a season (18) set by the team n 85 n order to fnsh as well as they dd last season. Janes) by Mchael Anderson Contrbutng Wrter Charleston, West Vrgna and Hartford, Connectcut have each brought to Cedarvlle a talented black athlete. The cty of Charleston s the home of Mke Freeman, whle Dan Jones hals from the Hartford area. Freeman, who was born n St. Lous, Mssour, had also lved n New York Cty before movng to the wld, wonderful state" of West Vrgna. Lvng presently n the state captol. Charleston, Freeman lves wth hs famly n the parsonage of the Allen Chapel, the church hs father currently pastors. Educated manly n the Charleston School Dstrct, Freeman was also a standout n basketball at Charleston Hgh School, startng hs unor year at the guard poston. Averagng 19 ponts per game n hs senor year. Freeman was notced by varous college recruters. Lttle dd he know, he was also beng watched by Bll Mck, a referee n hs conference who had a great nfluence on Freeman s decson to come to Cedarvlle. Knowng that Freeman was a Chrstan, Mck, a former student at Cedarvlle, encouraged hm to consder a Chrstan college atmosphere. Now a sophomore, Freeman looks back to the begnnng of hs freshman year as a rough experence. He and fellow recrut Tony Ewng often felt alenated from the rest of the school because they were mnortes n a predomnately whte college. J! 5Ppe fy^nfs ptnlpg * A h 291 ll n. r r wf 1 T. If t weren t for Tony and me stckng together at the begnnng, I don t thnk that I could have handled t, Freeman says. But he dd. Wth obtanng Chrstan educaton and playng basketball as two focal ponts n hs college career, he met a lot of people and establshed many frendshps. As a result, Freeman feels more confortable as a sophomore than he dd as a freshman. Dan Jones was born n Hartford, Connectcut where he has spent all of hs lfe. Rocky Hll, a suburb of Hartford, s where Jones lves wth hs famly. In contrast to Freeman, Jones was educated at the Emmanuel Chrstan Academy located n Newngton, Connectcut. Jones has a vast background n sports because hs father coaches soccer, basketball, and baseball at hs hgh school. In addton to excellng n these three sports, Jones s also a profcent tenns player. He has played n tournaments sponsored by the Natonal Junor Tenns League. Frends from Jones hgh school nfluenced hm to come to Cedarvlle. He chose Cedarvlle because t was a Chrstan college wth a good reputaton n tenns. Playng varsty soccer n the fall, Jones contrbuted sx goals for the NCCAA 2nd-place Yellow by Mke Wttmer The NCCAA tournament s comng to Cedarvlle. March 6, 7, and 8, Cedarvlle wll host and partcpate n the women s Natonal Chrstan Collegate Athletc Assocaton tournament. Even though hs lades are 9-12, Head Coach Bob Fres beleves they should not be taken lghtly. The grls know that f they play well they can play wth anybody. We proved that, aganst Mt. Vernon. We should have won the Defance (NAIA power) but let t slp through our fngers. The grls played well enough to wn. There won't be anybody better n the NCCAA tournament than Defance. Playng nspred basketball, the women have won seven o f ther Freeman, Jones help For Vour Best Deal n General Electrc RppUonces Jackets. Wth tenns season on the horzon, he wll soon see acton wth the men s tenns team. Concernng hs adustment to Cedarvlle, he repled, I ddn t have any maor problems, but I must say that meetng people helped me to establsh myself. Frendshp s an mportant word n the vocabulary of both Freeman and Jones. Frends were the man reason for the adaptaton of both to Cedarvlle College. Freeman explans t ths way. Frendshps that are establshed now at college are often lfelong frendshps. Cedarvlle Hardware pant uuashers sueepers mcrouuaves dryers ranges last 10 contests. 1 knew comng nto the season that t was gong to be a year of puttng peces together. I ddn t know the grls and they ddn t know me and what style of ball I expected. The grls came on a lot faster than I antcpated them dong. It only took them about half of the season. The second half we played well. We lost to three top conference teams by a total of 8 ponts. I would lke to go back and play those early games over agan now that we have everythng together. I thnk we could have a much better record than what we ended up wth. We could be well over.500. Contemplatng her season, Patt Parker enoys the support that the team members gve you on the court. But they also support you off the court outsde your normal group of frends. teams Dan Jones and Mke Freeman mpact Cedarvlle sports teams. (Photo by Glenn Carpenter) t.v.s heaters hardware refrgerators Jones reaffrms ths n sayng, After your tme as an actve athlete s ceased, your frends wll stll reman fathful and true. Both Freeman and Jones agree that they were attracted to Cedarvlle not only by the sports that they play, but also because t provdes a Chrstan atmosphere where they can better strve to lve by bblcal prncples. Fres also ctes team co-operaton as a Jacket strength. We don t have an All-Amercan or any real ndvdual stars, ft s ust that everybody dd her role to the best of her ablty. They pulled together. When thngs got tough they dug n together and fought back. I apprecate that. If the women dd have an outstandng player, t would be Karen Headdngs. Headdngs fnshed sxth n the WBCC n feld goal percentage and scorng, httng 49% of her shots for a 15.3 average. She also placed nnth n free throw percentage (61%). Headdngs grabbed 10 rebounds a game and Chrs Fresen added 9.1 to fnsh thrd and ffth n the 'conference, respectvely. Lookng ahead, the Jackets are excted about next year. I m lookng forward to the future, comments Fres. I thnk we could have a real good team, but t s gong to depend on how our younger kds come around. We are losng our two senor^ co-captans. Karen Headdngs leads us n almost every category and Jewel Schroder helps run thngs. Crystal Patrck adds, The coach s recrutng a lot. I m lookng forward to next year. In preparaton for the tournament, Fres states, We re gong to try to get everybody rested and healthy. Some have come down wth the flu. We ll practce hard two weeks before the tournament. I m not gong to do anythng new. It s ust a matter of puttng nto practce and executng well what we ve been workng on all season.. The Jackets wll rely on ther rugged defense throughout the tournament. Defense s the thng that s carred us all season long. We ust get down n the trenches and battle. That s where we re gong to have to wn t on defense. We do a lot of thngs on defense. We try to put a lot of pressure and do a good ob on the boards. It takes a pretty bold coach to come out and say that we can wn t, but I beleve that. We can t play sloppy and wn, but f we play to our potental we have a chance of beatng anybody that s here. DONORS WANTED For People who go through wndshelds and red lghts. For kds wth leukema.
