Agents has dropped ts prevously advertsed plans to ser`hprated edtons" of Aercan textbooks.at prces far below Aercan retal lstngs. n related acton, the nsttute Judcal Conttee began an nvestgaton Monday of TA's actvtes n ts two-week exstence. TTA's four renbers, Durk Pearson '64, Gene Salan '63, Wlla Schd 'C3 and Erwn Strauss '65, ade ther decson known n a eetng wh the nsttute Cottee Executve Cottee last Thursday. At that te Mr. Schd cted concern for the legalty of TA's operaton, whch he descrbed as "questonable at best" as the reason for TTA's decson. Subsequent to ths eetng, Mr. Salan cted two other reasons for TTA's change n plans: the lack of nsttute approval for - 4 Jlo - the operaton, arand e tact that too any students had learned how to3 order. the books on ther own, bypassng and consequently not pay. ng extra for TTA's servces. Wth regard to the legalty of Aercan Cvzaton To Be Lerner's Top n Lecture Tuesay Max Lerner Dr. Max Lerner wll lecture on "Aerca as a Cvlzaton" at Kresge Audtoru Tuesday, Aprl 24. The lecture, at 8 p.., s sponsored by the Lecture Seres Cottee. There wll be no adsson charge. Lerner, an author, teacher and colunst, s presently Professor of Aercan Cvlzaton at Brandes and has taught at Harvard Unversty. He s- well known for hs book "Aerca as a Cvlzaton," hs lectures, and hs coluns n hte New York Post. t TTA's proposed operatons, Mr. Salan quoted a lawyer contacted by the group as sayng the operatons "see to be legal." However, Mr. Salarn stated he had been told the Congress was rushng legslaton to ake the port of "prated edtons" llegal. TTA felt, he sad, that lt operatons ght be llegal by the te the books would be delvered durng the suer. The Judco hearng ended Monday, but the cottee, headed'by John Rourke '62, expected to-contnue ts delberators on the case Tuesday. The outcoe of the nvestgaton wll be announced n rext week's The Tech. Judco was nvestgatng four specfc ponts: 1) TrA's cla of nsttute sancton; 2) TTA's use of the nsttute al syste, a prvlege not granted to coercal busnesses under nsttute' polcy;' 3) TrA's use of nsttute bulletn boards, a prvlege restrcted to recognzed actvtes; and 4) TA's neglgence n not followng nstructons receved fro the offce'of the Dean of Student Affars n conversatons pror to TTA's sales capagn. Although TTA has decded not to sell the "prated" texts, one of the ebers.sad the group ay go ahead wth plans to sell books for MT huantes courses. Because a ssng book s usually not reported for soete, the lbrary staff s not aware of how any books have been lost or stolen, but havng been once dsapponted by hs falure to locate a catalogued book, t s easy for the lbrary-user to thnk the nuber s large. Many of these volues are sply "walkng out the door." We fnd that the book checkng syste s conducted n the ost cursory way, even provdng teptaton to book theves. f bref cases are opened at all, they are gven a erely superfcal exanaton, so that theft s alost chld's play. Snce the MT collecton usually ncludes only one volue of a work, f that s stolen the only recourse s to another lbrary. But perhaps the ost gallng thng about the whole stuaton s the refusal by lbrary staff ebes to obtan lost books for undergraduates by ner-lbry loan. Ths s because there has been too uch request for such loaw n the past. We feel ths sort of dscarnaton s both unjust and shortsghted. As far as book theft s concerned, we urge that ether the checker syste be strengthened to a level of usefulness, book nventores be conducted and stolen books be replaced edately, or that, MT consder closed stacks for ts lbrares. The latter soluton s radcal and undesrable but ay be necessary f the open stacks prvlege contnues to be abused. Users of the lbrares who have encontered proble ay help to ensure a quck soluton n the followng ways: When the user thnks a book ay be ssng, he should request an nvestgaton by the staff. Make qute sure that t s understood that the book s wanted and ssng. Then f te allows, he should request the book by nter-lbrary loan. f enough undergraduates request tbls servce then perhaps the staff wll be oved to coarect ths deplorable stuaton. Conferences As student concern for natonal and nlernatonal affars grows, we fnd sprngng up an ncreasng nuber of. planned student conferences at colleges and unverstes across the country. One such conference, at whch MT was represented by Dck Sten, was the Aercan Assebly's conference on Ars Control held at the Ar Force Acadey n Colorado Sprngs. The expenses nvolved n havng MT represented at ths conference aounted to about $270, of whch $170 was provded by the nsttute Cottee's Fnance Board fro general. actvtes funds. More coon are eetngs held nearer Boston whch deand an outlay of $10 or ore by the Fnance Board. n the past, these nvtatons have been handled by the nsttute Cottee and the Fnance Board on an ad hoc bass; now the nsttute Cottee wshes to ake provson n advance of these expendtures. Before decdng to accept an nvtaton to such a eetng, t s portant that the nsttute Cottee look carefully at the value whch can be derved fro t, both for the ndvdual partclpants and for the county n general. t s certanly worthwhle for MT to be represented at portant conclaves of ths nature, both fro an educatonal and a publc relatons pont of vew, but certan preses should be ade clear. When evaluatng an nvtaton, we ust deterne whether or not qualfed partcpants can be found. f the nsttute Cottee beleves that they can, then the exstence of the nvtaton ust be publczed so that all qualfed partcpants can be advsed to apply. Pre-conferenee publcty lke that gven n last weekend's conference at Yale s portant. When qualfed partcpants are selected, they ust be told of ther responsblty to report ther actvtes and fndngs upon ther return, and these reports ust be followed up wth adequate publcty. n ths way, the educatonal benefts of the eetng can extend beyond the ndvdual partcpant. n the allotent of fnancal ad to partcpants, we feel that the ndvdual should pay soe fracton of hs own expenses; ths ncrease hs personal responsblty to the project. n addton, we encourage partcpatonll at conferences nearer the Boston area, a tourse whch wll not only decrease expendtures, but wll allow ore people to partcpate. Each such request and nvtaton ust be evaluated on ts own erts, but we urge the nsttute Cottee and the Fnance Board to face the proble squarely and to decde n advance what allowance ay be ade for expenses of ts type. Then a dered progra of publcty and selecton should assure adequate representaton. Letters to The Tech Rev. Ths s no te for fun and gaes. Let us nstead study hard, cra fercely, prepare assduously. n ths colun today let us ake a quck survey of Englsh poetry. When we speak of Englsh poetry, we are, of course, speakng of Byron, Shelley, and Keats. Soe say that of the three, Keats was the ost talented. t s true that he dsplayed hs gfts earler than the others. Whle stll a schoolboy at St. Swthn's he wrote hs epc lnes: f a good, get an apple, So don't whstle n the chapel. Fro ths dstngushed begnnng, he went on to wrte another 40,000 poes n hs lfete-whch s all the ore rearkable when you consder that he was only fve feet tall l enton ths fact only to show that physcal probles never keep the true artst fro creatng. Byron, for exaple, was lae. Shelley had an ngrown har. Nonetheless, these three ttans of lterature turned out a vertable torrent of roantc.poetry. Nor dd they neglect ther personal lves. Byron, a devl wth the lades, was expelled fro Oxford for dppng Elzabeth Barrett's pgtals n an nkwell. He thereupon left England to fght n the Greek war of ndependence. He fought bravely and well, but woen were never far fro hs nd, as evdenced by ths ortal poe: How splendd t s to fght for the Greek, But don't enjoy t half as uch as dancng cheek to cheek. Whle Byron fought n Greece, Shelley reaned n England, where he becae court poet to the Duke of Marlborough. (t s nterestng to note n passng that Marlborough was the orgnal spellng of Marlboro Cgarettes, but the akers were unable to get the entre word on the package. Wth characterstc ngenuty they cleverly lopped off the fnal "gh". Ths, of course, left the wth a "gh" lyng around the factory. They looked for soe place to put t and fnally decded to gve t to the Drector of Sales, Mr. Vncent Van Go. Ths had a rather curous result. As plan Van Go, he had been a crackerjack drector of sales, but once he becae Van Gogh, he felt a ysterous, rresstble urge to pant. He resgned fro the Copany and becae an artst. t dd not work out too well. When Van Gogh learned what a great success Marlboro Cgarettes quckly becae--as, of course, they had to wth such a flavorful flavor, such a flterful flter, such a flp-top box, such a soft pack-he was so upset about leavng the fr that-he cut off hs ear n a ft of chagrn.) Hs frends, Shelley and Byron, touched to the heart, rushed to Roe to stretch h. Ths too faled. Then Byron, ever the lades' an, took up wth Lucreza Borga, Catherne of Aragon, and Anne Oakley. Shelley, a ore doestc type, stayed hoe wth hs wfe Mary, and wrote hs faous poe: love to stay hoe wth the ssus and wrte, And hug her and kss her and gve her a bte. Mary Shelley fnally got so tred of beng btten that she went nto another roo and wrote Frankensten. Upon readng the anuscrpt, Shelley and Byron got so scared they edately booked passage hoe to England. Keats tred to go too, but he was so sall that the clerk at the steashp offce couldn't see h over the top of the counter. So Keats reaned n Roe and ded of a broken heart.
