2 Edtoral Opnon To Old Man: Your Te Now! For the past three weeks the people n Old Man have answered student actvsts' deands wth, "Express your coplants through legtate student voces." The Adnstraton has responded to Walkertown and the Free Speech Moveent by sayng, n effect, "Work through the Undergraduate Student Governent." Well, hold on to your belltower, Old Man, 'cause here t coes.. Forty-one students are-runnng n the USG electons whch open ths ornng. Of these 41, at least four ert specal attenton. They are Alan Krvoy fro North Halls, Noran Schwartz fro town, Jeff Shear fro West Halls, and Judy Rubn fro Sons-McElwan. All four have been nvolved n Walkertown. All four have expressed dssatsfacton wth the voceless and powerless state of the student body. And all four have been told that although they ght have vald coplants, they ust work through USG. We support the electon of these four students because they have shown they are wllng to do soethng about student grevances. They have not been sttng back, lke ost students, content wth ther beer and football gaes. They have not rased an occasonal feeble voce, wonderng "Why can't we acheve what we want?" nstead, they know why students have not been able to present ther requests effectvely. They know that students here have been sttng back too long, allowng ther voces and power to rot. And they know that now, ths ter, when a relatvely sall nuber of students have banded together to argue for Successor to The Free Lance, est. SS7 bona fde student causes, the sall nuber faces an overwhelng student and faculty apathy. The sall nuber ust work aganst a student body whch has no confdence n student actvs or USG, due to a long hstory of adnstratve ndfference to USG requests^ The sall nuber ust also put up wth dsnterest on the part of ost faculty ebers. True, soe faculty ebers have turned out at Walkertown. The ajorty, however, are also content wth ther beer and football gaes, or whatever t s that faculty ebers are content wth. The legtate student ssues we refer to are too nuerous to enton here. We have dealt wth the n the past such coplants as those concernng downtown lvng condtons, dortory lvng regulatons, the classroo stuaton and the student role n Unversty polcy foraton. There are also ssues of a uch ore coplex, and perhaps ore portant, nature such as the shaefully low nuber of black students at Penn State and the deternaton of the Unversty's role n socety. But now your te has coe, Old Man. Hopefully, the four students we have cted wll be elected. Perhaps they can convnce 3-ou, by workng "wthn the syste," that vald student coplants exst. Perhaps they can generate a call to acton on the part of USG a call whch would lead to effectve, well-docuented presentaton of student requests. Should ths happen, Old Man, you wll no longer'be able to gnore the student voce. We have qute a lst of people scheduled to receve "Joeys," so let's get rght nto the presentatons: The GOLDEN GLOVES award goes to Jon Fox ' and hs Penn State delegaton at Mountaneer Feld. Fearlessly carryng a 12-foot sgn that read, "Take t n the Ear Mountaneer," the group -walked n front of the West Vrgna fraternty cheerng secton before the gae, wthstood a ercless peltng of ru, coke and deonstratve adjectves and nouns, and eventually eerged fro a fst-throwng elee vrtually unscathed, though outnubered and on eney grounds. ' The- WHO'S HE award goes to Charle Wlson. After reachng over hs shoulder n the end zone to catch a Chuck Burkhart pass, avodng he outstretched hands of two defenders, the press box corps ched, "Who's he?" t had been Wlson's frst catch and hs frst play of the day n hs frst varsty start snce hs Cocoa, Fla. hgh school days. The RELABLE SOURCES award %fc goes to the Assocated Press, who sent a wre KOLB story to all state newspapers Frday nght, sayng that njured Lon fullback Don Abbey would start the gae aganst West Vrgna, and would swtch to' halfback, too. (A) Don Abbey ddn't even ake the trp to Morgantown, and (B) Joe Paterno never had any ntenton of akng the 6-3, 236-pound runner a halfback. Whch s another reason why everyone shouted "Who's he?" when Wlson scored. ' The WHO, ME? award wll be presented to John Kulka. n the second perod wth the score ted, Paterno decded on a fourth-down 23-yard feld goal. Only allowed by the rules to substtute for two players, he sent n holder Mke Sth and kcker Rusty Garthwate. One thng was ssng however. Guard To Jackson usually snaps the center pass, but he was standng besde Paterno at the bench, unable to enter the gae. Kulka thus got the call, hkng the ball well over Garthwate's head. The WHO, ME award goes -to Garthwate who, after seeng the ball fly over hs head, raced back to pck t up and run soethng he has never done before. He only got as far as an erect stance before beng duped by several Mountaners. However, the specalst doesn't have to add fullback to hs credentals. He booted four consecutve extra ponts and a 25-yard, feld goal alost nto the Monongehela Rver just outsde the stadu. The MECHANX LLUSTRATED award wll be gven to Ted Kwalck and Chuck Burkhart, who pooled resources to repar a broken Four Tops cartrdge tape on the bus trp. The play was the frst the soph was drectly nvolved n, and he ay have to play qute a few years to top t. Untl that gae-tyng play, Sherwood had done qute a job challengng the Lons. After.Burkhart had put State on the scoreboard frst by ovng the Lons 73 yards n 13 plays, Sherwood and junor end Oscar Patrck put on an aeral show and threatened to break the gae open. ' West Vrgna drove to the Lons' 26 yard lne, anly on the strength of a 21-yard pass to Patrck. Fro the 26, Sherwood ht Patrck on the 13 and the end just flashed past Neal Sth and Paul Johnson nto the end zone. The Lons couldn't ove the ball after the kckoff and West Vrgna took over on ts own 33. Sherwood, rushed hard and scrablng, threw a deep pass fro hs 25. Patrck gathered t n at the State 25 and was gone. The Lon defenders were all around, but couldn't touch h. Tears of Joy When he got back to the bench, fghtng off hs delrous teaates, Patrck was practcally weepng wth joy and was treblng wth excteent. The crowd was n a frenzy and Mountaneer yells flled the ar. West Vrgna had won the frst quarter, but Penn State won all the rest. Wlson's catch enabled the Lons to go to -the locker roo wth a te,- and when -they eerged for the second half they copletely donated the ' young Mountaneers. "t was sophs aganst upperclassen," West Vrgna coach J Carlen sad after the gae. "We're stll young, and ' encouraged wth ths perforance. "We.ade soe stakes we couldn't afford to ake, and we ssed soe tackles because Baker Brown and Marv Sx had Charley horses and ddn't practce all week." Then Carlen talked about the Lon's workhorse, halfback Charle Pttan, who gave the def enders fts all day. "That Pttan s soethng else," Carlen sad. Rusty Garthwafe later added a feld goal (to go wth hs four extra ponts) and the Lons had a cofortable lead. Sherwood, an exctng quarterback who can put a lot of ponts on-the scoreboard n a hurry, started tryng to brng the Mountaneers back wth short passes. Fro hs own 16, Sherwood called a screen left and-sent three blockers ahead of the.ntended recever. The only one who washt.fooled on the play was the everpresent Ohkotz. That ntercepton, Onkotz' fourth n.'thre'e.gaes, sewed up tne vctory. ' - West Vrgna scored ts last touchdown aganst the second-strng defense wth 56 seconds left. After the gae, coach Joe Paterno reflected oh the hardestwon vctory of the season. "' satsfed," he sad. "We're not gong to annhlate a good football tea. West Vrgna s a fne football tea and they're all gong to ba tough lke that." Next week's gae wll be the toughest test yet, as the Lons take on UCLA on the West Coast. "t's a bg gae for us," Paterno sad. "They're all bg for us. and UCLA losng s gong to ake t a lttle tougher." Saturday's wn was tough, as. the bups and bruses on the players planly showed. But wth Burkhart gettng better every gae, wtk Onkotz readng plays lke Ray Ntschke and wth the best runnng back east of Leroy Keyes, a lot of tough teas are gong to fnd State's just a lttle bt tougher.
