I9 REVIEW OF BASKET- BALL SEASON GRAHAM-LEE SOCIETY NEW CONSTITUTION OF ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DR- H. D. CAMPBELL ADDRESSES Y. M. C. A. Eleven Games Won Out of 9 Team Scored 692 Ponts to Opponents' 52 The Washngton and Lee 9 basketball team completed ts so:, >dule of 9 games on March 4, wth the V. P. L game n Blacksburg. The schedule was the longest and hardest ever attempted by a Blue and Whte basketball team. Sx games were played n Lexngton.fve on a Chrstmas trp, through North Carolna, seven on the week's Northern nvason nto Maryland and Pennsylvana, and the return game n Blacksburg completed the schedule. The Chrstmas trp can hardly be looked upon as a part of the Varsty schedule, became only three nen on the team became regular Varsty men. However the team broke even wth Charlotte Y. M. C. A. and the Ashevlle Athletcs and lost to the Lynchburg Y. M. C. A., one of the strongest teams n the state. I'h" Northern trp was the most successful ever made by a Washngton and Lee team. The qunt lost only two out of seven games played on foregn terrtory. The lost games were aganst two of the strongest teams n the East, the Navy and Swarthmore. The qunt accomplshed the rare feat of wnnng two games n one day, when they defeated Mt. St. Mary's and Frederck Athletc Assocaton on the last day of the trp. In Lexngton the team won the openng game aganst Roanoke College, wth a record score, the largest ever run up by a Washngton and Lee team. The team, however, lost to Vrgna, after havng beaten them n Charlottesvlle ten days belore. Tne Vrgna game and the V. P. I. game, a fortnght later, were lost by the falure to get nto the game untl the second half, when t was to late and also by the nablty of the players to cage fouls. The season as a whole, however, s consdered one of the best ever had here. The team won out of 9 games played. Games Won Lost Per Cent. They are new at work on the by-laws of the Assocaton, and wll make them publc as scon as completed. In worknvr out the by laws t may be necessary lo make a few mnor changes for the consttuton as now drawn up, but the nstrument gven below s practcally a* t wll be when presented to the students for ratfcaton. Many changes are provded for n the new bass of organzaton. The most radcal departure from the ola system s the separaton of the Athletc Assocaton from the student body oganaton. It s provded that membershp n the Assocaton shall be dependent, upon the payment of an annual fee of $7.5. and honorary membershp s provded for alumn. The rovernng body s also charged n character. The student members of ths Councl wll be the same as they have been on the Athletc Com mttee, but alumn and faculty members are to be added. The consttuton as proposed s as follows: ART. The words of Dr. Campbell were lstened to attentvely, and altogether ths was one of the best and most mpressve meetngs of the year. The subject ol the address was purty and the speaker ended by sayng that the effectve way to purfy our hearts and lves s to fll our mnds wth noble thoughts and hgh deals, to store up n ourselves the knowledge whch wll gude us and control out reflex actons. A quartette composed of Ned Graham, Jack Campbell, Lloyd Craghll and Frazer McGll gave a selecton whch was thoroughly enjoyed. The smgr.g of hymns was good and an. ncrease n attendance was noted. 2 r \ RING-TUM PHI A.&.M. GAME DEFINITELY SETTLED Arrangements Completed to Meet North Carolna n Ralegh Nov. ManBger Ppes utated to a Rngtum Ph reporter yesterday afternoon that t had been defntely decded to play the A. and M. College of North Carolna n Ralegh on Nov.. Two games were offered for (hs date, one wth Kentucky State Unversty at Lexngton, Ky., and the other wth A. and II. An attractve guarantee had been offered by the Kentuckans and negotatons had been practcally closed several days ago for the Kentucky game. Moreover t had been thought by the management that on account of faculty objecton then' would be no chance for playng A. and M. But the faculty commttee havng wthdrawn ther objecton, and the sentment of the student body havng been ex pressel so unanmously n favor of gvng A. and M. a date, t was decded to close wth the North Carolnans for Nov.. The schedule has not yet been completed, but three games have been so far settled. V. P. I. wll be met n Roanoke on Oct. 28th. The annual game wth North Carolna wll agan be played n Norfolk on Nov. 8, one week after the A. and M. game. Nov. 4th s an open date, but wll probably be flled wth a Vrgna college. The Thanksgvng game s stll pendng. It was at frst thought that Bucknell would be played n Lynchburg, but satsfactory terms could not be Rotten. The com pleted schedulf wll n all probablty be ready for announcement n the near future. REVISION OF EXAMI- NATION SCHEDULE Last week the faculty at ts regu lar meetng decded 'to change the plan of examnatons by makng the regular perod for tests sx days nstead of ten, as heretofore. It has long been felt thatjthe present plan, gvng as t does, 3 days out of the college year to wrtten tests, s unsatsfactory, both because t gves too much weght to examnaton, and thus mnmzes term work, and became too much tme s taken from regular work. To remedy ths stuaton two plans were proposed: to reduce the number of examnaton perods to two nstead of three; or to keep the old arrangement of three terms and reduce the perod to sx days. At the same tme the value of class work s emphaszed by a regulaton that examnatons shall count only one thrd of the student's grade for the term. Ths provson s amed at thejpractce of "crammng'" whch has heretofore been of much assstance n adng men who loaf durng the term to get credt fer ther tckets. Stated n more detal the plan s that one week shall be the perod alloted n each term for examnatons. Three hours nstead of fve wll be allotted to each subject. Two examnatons shall be held ea:h day nstead of one the frst from 9 to 2 and the second from 3 to 6. Wednesday and Saturday there wll be no afternoon examnatons and a breathng space wll thus be afforded n the mddle of the perod. The new system wll go nto effect next fall and wll apply only to the academc and engneerng schools The Law examnatons wll reman aa heretofore. ', BAD WEATHER HOLDS UP PRACTICE The fve nches of snow that fell Tuesday forced the baseball squad to practce n the gymnasum all last week nstead of on Wlson Feld. However t s hoped they wll be out on the damond tomorrow, as t s only two weeks before the openng game wth Roanoke College. However Coach Pollard has not been dle, for he has been puttng the squad through rgd gymnasum work every atternoon n order to get ther muscles hard and put the men n the best physcal condton possble. The ptchers, Moran, Efrd, Ball, Parades, Gwathmey, Hamlton and Dooley are lmberng up and fast gettng control. Thompson, who comes from Georga Tech, wll not have much tme to be out untl sfter the law exams. Other men who won't be out untl the last of the month, on account of law work, are Lemley, 9 utlty man, and Branaman from Roanoke College, who s sure to gve someone a tussle for a regular brth n one of the gardens. He s a veteran player, knowng the game, besdes beng a heavy and consstent htter. Thngs look as though Donahue would step nto Wat Efrd's hoes behnd the bat. Hejhandles hmtelf lke a ball player, besdes havng a good wng. It s hard to tell who wll be seen on the ntal sack. Peeples has the advantage, owng to the experence he receved n the games he played last season. However he wll be hard pushed by Jennngs and Clark. If nether of these show up well on the damond Hamlton may he substtuted fom the mound to the fr t sack, where he played at Culver Mltary Academy. He has both the heght and the wng, f he can develop nto a good felder and batter. THE PROSPECTS There s no V'sble reason why ths seaon W-shngton and Lee should not be represented on the damond by the best baseball team she has ever had. Wth such players as Moran and Efrd n the box, Donahue at the recevng end, Captan Smth on second, Erwn at short and Brown on thrd, the nfeld wll be hard to beat n the South. Waddll. Smth and Brown are about as fast as any one on the bases, wnle n the httng department, t looks as though we wll show four or fve three hundred htters at the end of the season wth Turhyfll, Webster, Smth, Branaman and Brown. WILLIS ELECTED SECRETARY At a meetng of the Executve Commttee of the Student Body last Thursday n Newcomb Hall, J.House ton Wlls of Washngton, D.C., was chosen secretary of the Athletc Assocaton. Ths electon was made necessary by the wthdrawal from college of George M.Anderton sever al days ago. Under resolutons adopted by the Student 3ody last sprng t devolves upon the Execu tve Commttee to fll vacances occurng n any offces of the Student Body organaton durng the year. Mr. Wlls s a member of the Junor law class. Ths s hs second year n college; he was a student n the academc department n 9 -'7. j Mr. Wlls played thrd base on the 97 baseball team Throughout the leanon he was an accurate felder and a dependable htter, fnshng the season at the head of the battng lst. Mr. Wlls s a member of the Ph Gamma Delta Fraternty, the Whte Frars and the Sgma Socety, and pledge of the Ph Delta Ph Legal Fraternty. CLIFTON rk^-bleb S«, 3 for 26c. Cloott, P V <«.-,'. THE A. & M. GAME The commttee apponted by the student body at the massmeetng on March wshes to make publc the result of ther efforts to brng about the schedulng of a game wth the A. & M. College of North Carolna. A conference was held wth the Presdent concernng the possblty of playng the game, at whch the resolutons and petton adopted at the mass-meetand sgned by about 5 students, were presented, as follows: The student body of Washngton and Lee Unversty, n mass meetng assembled, on ths tre frst day of March, 9, feelng that the students of the Unversty, snce they support athletcs by ther contrbutons, and by ther own efforts make athletcs possble, should have a voce n the management of atheletc matters, do resolve;. That t s the sense of ths meet ; that W. and L owes t to' A. and M. n vew of the unwarranted cancellaton of the game last fall, to schedule and play a game of football wth A. and M. ths fall. 2. That Washngton and Lee owes t to herself to schedule and play such a game, n order to clear herself of any mpresson of yellowness on her part by reason of the regrettable cancellaton of last year, whch mpresson, we take t, would bs fully justfed by a refusal to play ths fall. That we petton the Presdent of the Unversty, and those n authorty a date be offered to A. and M. on whch t s practcable for them to play. In reply to the petton the Presdent stated that hs objecton to the schedulng of a game wth A. & M. was purely for fnancal reasons, and set forth hs poston [n the matter n a lette- to the commttee under date of March 4: Lexngton, Va., ) March 4, 9. Gentlemen: My poston concarnng the petton presented by you on behalj of the student body askng permsson to schedule a football game wth the A.and M. College of North Carolna, s as follows:. Wth reference to the general queston of schedulng games wth other colleges, the faculty ha j gven to the Presdent and to the Graduate Manager, jontly, frral vstn authorty. The genpral queston of polcy nvolved s arrangng a football game wth the A. and M. College would, therefore, be submtted to the presdent and Graduate Manager for fnal revew. My own vote on ths queston wll be largely determnedby the vew taken by the faculty commttee on athletcs and by the responsble coach of the team. 2. Wth reference to the specfc queston of grantng permsson to any partcular team to play any partcular game away from Lexngton (assumng that thf> game has been agreed upon n the manner authorzed under thn regulatons), the faculty has gven to the Presdent alone fnal au thorty, subject to the followng condtons; (a) Every outstandng oblgaton of the Athletc Assocaton must have been already pad. (b) There must be n the treasury of the Assocaton to the credt of the toan an amount of avalable cash suffcent to rover the necessary expenses of the trp to b made, as estmated by the Presdent. Any amount guxranteed hy a competng team.r-r by other responsble partes, may be regarded as avalable cash Yours very sncerely, GEORGE H. DENNY. Presdent. Messrs; N. D. Smthson, charman. C. P. lght, G. B. Peters, Commttee. Dr. L. W. Smth, Graduate Manager of Athletcs, was then seen by the commttee, and the poston of the student body relatve to a game was gone over wth hm. As the decson of the matter rested wth the presdent and the Graduate Manager t was agreed wth Dr. Smth that they would consder the petton of the student body and render fnal answer. Ther concluson s set forth n a letter to the commttee, from the Presdent, as follows: Lexngton, Va., ) March 8, 9. j Gentlemen; I sent you under date of March 4th a statement of my poston concern ng the petton presented by you. 8 8 RING-TUM PHI REVIEW OF BASKET- At Home 4 Northern Trp 5 Contnued from cage BALL SEASON 2 f Total The team, n the 9 games played, scored a total of 672 ponts to ther opponents 52, as follows; W. and L. Opponents Chrstmas Trp Northern Trp At Home The team ths season was composed of four veteran players, whch n part accounts for the good work of the qunt. Bear at center, who last season played on the scrubs, was the only new man on the fve. Captan Herbert Hanns has played at left forward for three years on the Varsty. Ths season was hs last and by consstent work he rounded out an effcent career n ths sport for Washngton and Lee. Durng the season he scored the largest number of foul; and was second n feld goals and total score. The vacancy, whch wll be made at rght fnr»;»rd by the graduaton of George Boyd wll be hard to fll next year. For lour years he ha played on the varsty and every year has been the chef scorer for the qunt. Ths season was hs best record, he scored 24 ponts. Ths mark has never been equalled before n ths state by a colleje player. For the last two seasons he has been alternatng at forward and center, whch tended to slghtly break up hs teamwork. He WKS captan of the 9 qunt. Tommy Glasgow has played for three years at left guard. Hs drbblng and ablty to dodge have been hs chef assets. If he cannot be persuaded to come out next year he poston wll be hard to fll. He was manager of ths year's team. For two seasons Crag has been a tower of strength at rght guard. Whle not a large scorer he had the knack of breakng up the opponents team work whenever they got close to ther basket. The one vacancy Irom last years team at center was ably flled by Bear, whose mprovement through the./ear was marked. Hs return next year wll be a nucleus around whch the coach can buld a wnnng team. Both of the substtutes Burke and Moore wll be back and are sure to wn postons on the team. The return of four old men was the only thng that kept them from beng on the team as regulars. Moore played n every game whle Burk played n all but one. Humphrey deserves specal credt for the hard and consstent work he dd on the squad. Ordnarly he would have made the Varsty, but ths season there were too many veterans However he was out every day and dd hs share towards developng the Varsty qunt. Campbell wll also be back and should be able to fll n one of the postons whch wll be vacant next sea; on. The team wll be presented sweaters at the concert on March 6th at the Hgh School by the Combned Muscal Clubs. Sexton, who last May ptched the 5 nnng to game for A. and M. of North Carolna aganst Washngton and Lee, has been bought by the Brmngham Southern league team.
