Y -Jaes Hll, Harvard Unversty Dear Mr. Hll: There s no substtute for ablty. And nether the age nor the genealogy of a hgh-rankng executve has a crucal bearng on whether he's able or not. t's a fact that the top en n the 3 largest U.S. busnesses have an average age of about 6. But t's also a fact that these wouldn't be the largest copanes f ther chef executves weren't en of outstandng ablty. On the other hand, belong to the Young Presdents Organzaton. t has ore than 2, ebers-en who qualfed for ebershp by becong presdents of llon dollar busnesses before they were 4. Soe YPO ebers are sons of busness founders. The ajorty, however, started ther own busnesses. n addton, there are a great nuber of successful "faly" busnesses founded orgnally by one an or by a faly group-for exaple, DuPont, Ford, BM, R. J. Reynolds, and, also, Motorola. But really don't see why these facts should be of great concern to your generaton. Most ature young en ebarkng on a busness career wll 'not be too dsapponted f they do not occupy the presdent's or board charan's seat by the te they're 35 or 4. Of course, soe wll but there are also rewardng and challengng postons along the way. There s no queston that t's dffcult to convnce a young an that experence s portant-he has to see t to beleve t. But, n any stuatons, n and out of busness, a knowledge of the past s essental to an understandng of the present. Most young executves quckly dscover they have a lot to gan fro ther older colleagues. Fro personal experence, can tell you that beng the son of a copany's founder poses soe unque probles. For the ost part, worked and studed twce as hard as rghlt have been the case n another copany. And, as t turned out, had 6 years of experence before becong presdent at 36. Perhaps y stuaton ay have elcted soe resentent, soe jealousy-that's only natural. But, very uch doubt whether any young an would decde to avod work at Motorola, or at DuPont, or at Ford solely because of the copanes' lneage. Let's look at a case hstory fron BM, a "faly" corporaton. The Septeber, 966, ssue of "Fortune" carred an artcle enttled, "BM's $5,,, Gable." As one BM executve qupped, t could have been called, "You bet your copany." SSUES AND ANSWERS For the last seven weeks, ths paper has been publshng a unque exchange of vews-a dalogue between lrobert W. Galvn, Motorola Charan, and Jaes Hll, Hzarvrd student. At Mr. Galvn's nvtaton, Mr. Hll presented soe of the opnons postve and negatve-that students have about busness. Ths s Mr. Galvn's answer to one of the ssues rased. Responses to addtonal ssues wll appear n ths paper and, shortly, Mr. Hll wll coent on what Mr. Galvn has to say. The dalogue wll contnue as long as there are ponts to dscuss. Ths and slar dalogues are appearng n college newspapers throughout the country. The decsons that had to be ade were obvously ajor ones-nvolvng BM's coputer future. And these decsons ebraced an extreely touchy 4 or 5-year perod. The artcle featured photographs of 8 edately concerned, key ndvduals. Two were BM's charan and presdent. The other sx executves, who had aged durng the delberatons, were fro 35 to 43. There's no doubt about the trust that BM had n the ablty of these executves. There's also no doubt that ther abltes were recognzed early. Your letter pled that n any busnesses ablty s only a secondary concern. Obvously, dsagree although 've heard slar stateents ade by other young en-. sn't t possble that the reason for ths erroneous presson s sply unfalarty wth the busness world? Or, perhaps, soetes t's due to the fact the student hasn't really been tested-he doesn't know whether he's able or not. Frankly, le doesn't know whether he can cut t n busness. No one can supply a pat answer or prose a Horato Alger future. can only state, on the bass of convcton and experence, that busness gves the hghest prorty to ablty and talent-to young, ntellgent leaders wth a capacty for accoplshent. ' sure you've heard coparable stateents ade by others n busness. Generally, they represent corporate thnkng and polces. No responsble copany proses soethng t doesn't thnk t can delver. Part of the lfe blood of any successful busness s preparng for and antcpatng the future. What the future wll be s the responsblty and the opportunty of today's young people. -Robert W.
