2 HOPE COLLEGE ANCHOR T LXXI 25 Hope College Holland, Mchgan May 15, 1959 Joan Schroeder ads n the ground-breakng cereones for the new dortory whch should releve the pressure on woen's housng, when copleted n Roong Assgnents Gven to Woen ''What roo dd you get?*' "Durfee 202." "Good, I'll be rght across the hall. We'll have a blast." So t went last week as hundreds of Hope's woen went through the long process of pullng roos. There was talk, later, about thngs that were related. We sat and lstened. "Fourscore and seven nutes ago our four deans broke ground for a Coluban Manson. Profound words eanated fro the lps of those concerned only to be outdone by the ore profound shovelfuls of sand dsplaced n an eager attept at hardhood. Well, as for e and y belongngs, gve e VanVleck or gve e Calvn." Wsh we could get back n the annex agan. What rots we had there." You lved there as a freshan. Would you replace your junor year wth your freshan? Heavens no, when you thnk of all the thngs you've learned, and heard and seen and found... "Voorhees wouldn't be bad lve n agan. If we all got together n one hall." to Why do we always stck together ths way? We landed together as freshen and we're nothng but a clque. How any tes have we vowed to get as far away fro each other as possble? And don't I get on ther nerves no end, and vce versa. But I' not gong to say no. Here I st. "When are they gong to have the new dor fnshed?" It's a good queston, but not whle we're stll here. It'll probably go up wth the grace and ease of a hardshelled crab backng ts way nto the outh of a lkbottle. By that te even the poltcal conventons wll be over wth. go to the one n Chcago. We ought to "Hardly sees possble that we're ths far n college already, does t?" Buttrck Gves Vews On Chaplan for Hope by Sharon Grossan Dr. George A. Buttrck, the speaker of our "R. E. Week n Mnature" recently, preaches at Harvard Unversary three out of every four Sundays. It used to be the practce of Harvard to have a dfferent Dr. George A. Buttrck preacher every Sunday but the servces were poorly attended and the adnstraton was eager to n crease Bblcal studes and nterest n the church. It was also felt that f one an were to preach regularly, the students would coe to h for counselng. Ths has proved to be very successful. The Sunday ornng servces are crowded and the watng lst of students for counselng s very long. When asked about the need for a chaplan here at Hope Dr. Buttrck repled that he could see two sdes to the atter. Because of the any Holland Cty churches whch are close to the capus, Dr. Buttrck feels that f there were a capus church there would be a conflct wth these churches whch welcoe Hope students to ther servces and n the partcpaton of chor and Sunday School teachers. The advantage of havng a chaplan, on the other hand, would be that he would be avalable for counselng at all tes. A record whch s kept carefully by each student perhaps even ore carefully than the record of hs grades s that of the nuber of cuts he has n each class. Occasonally a student s seen runnng to class because he has "used up" a safe nuber of cuts. Soe students hardly ever cut, whle others cut ndscrnately. Actually, however, there should not be a lted nuber of cuts to use up, that s to say, class attendance should not be requred! The college bulletn states that: "Class attendance s regarded as an essental part of the educatonal process at Hope College. The student s expected to beneft by classroo dscussons as well as by hs daly text assgnents. In the classroo he gves hs reactons and lstens to the reactons of hs fellow students. In such an educatve process, a student sses an rreplaceable soethng when he sses class. In accordance wth these prncples, all absences have an adverse effect upon the teacher's estate of the student's progress n the course unless ade up to the satsfacton of the nstructor. The student s to consder hself drectly responsble for hs absences. It s hs responsblty to present an excuse to and to request ake-up prvleges fro hs nstructor." Actually what s at ssue here s the ntegrty of the student hself. If class attendance s an essental part of the educatve process then ths s for the student hself to deterne. It does not see necessary to requre soethng whch s essental to one's educaton. When a person coes to college he s supposedly nterested n securng the best educaton that s avalable to h. If he s genunely nterested n usng every avalable channel of learnng then he wll coe to class of hs own volton. If, however, the student does not take advantage f avalable opportuntes then t ay be regarded as hs loss. In ether case t s not the duty of the college to requre the student to take advantage of hs opportuntes. The ature student can deterne whether t benefts to attend a partcular class or to cut t. The ature "student" who cuts classes ndscrnately and whose grades suffer as a result of t should not be coerced nto attendng class but pertted to follow the road he has chosen. Actually, there are soe courses where the ateral s presented drectly fro the book and n whch the student can obtan the ateral fro the text on hs own wthout attendng class. Soe courses are prarly drll whch can be done alone. There are other courses whch consst prarly of lectures. It s false to assue all classes of all courses to have the sae educatve value. Soe courses do not deand the student's attendance as others do. Also there are tes such as just before exas when a student perhaps could use hs te ore wsely by studyng on hs own rather than st n class. Ths procedure has already been deonstrated on our capus when the last week before exas s left to the dscreton of the student. He s expected to study on hs own, but f he s n need of help the nstructor s. avalable. Furtherore, class attendance should not be used as a threat for a grade. Absences should not be always regarded as the student's desre just to "take the hour off," but as a sgn that the nstructor ght not be presentng the ateral adequately so that the student feels he ay beneft ore by studyng on hs own. Requred attendance should not be used as a crutch by the nstructor. The best nstructors, wth the ost nterestng courses and the ost nterestng and worthwhle presentatons have the best attendance. It s te we recognze as other educatonal phlosophes do that the student can decde for hself how to ost effectvely derve the greatest beneft fro hs courses. If a student can attan a good grade and aster the ateral, he should be able to decde whether or not class attendance s essental. C. P. The Inqurng Reporter By Jane Tolnson Queston: What do you thnk of Tulp Te? Vvan Anderson, senor: My frst year here I thought t was great! My second year t was great, but uch too crowded. Now ths, y thrd year n Holland well, I'll have to wat and see. Sarah Needha, sophoore: thnk Tulp Te n tself s a very beautful te anfestng the glory of sprng. But when the town of Holland becoes flled beyond reason wth curous people just to see a tulp festval, I thnk t becoes rdculous. It s all rght for the vstors and for the erchants n town, but t s the te I would lke to hbernate. Reporter's Note: "The Inqurng Reporter", was orgnated to feel out student opnon on varous atters that, n one way or another, had an effect on lfe at Hope College. On one or two occasons there has been suffcent nterest to stulate enough responses to the poll to establsh a good representaton of student opnon. In ost cases ths has not happened. WHY? It could be the napproprateness of the questons used. It could be apathy on the part of the student body. If the questons are at fault, f they are not of edate nterest to you I would apprecate suggestons. If the proble s apathy on the part of the student body Let's just call t Sprng Fever and forget about t. The Inqurng Reporter r / Hope College Anchor Ver Beek Accepts Law Scholarshp Carl E. I Senor Phlosophy Scence-Relgon Vewed by Jaes Tan Scence and relgon can go hand n hand as long as they don't cla authorty on each other's terrtory. Both are concerned wth dfferent perspectves of truth. Scence s a systeatc and forulated knowledge, t can help relgon provded t does not try to explan the ultate beng God cannot be found n scentfc data. I thnk that scence should play an portant role n lberal arts educaton. By studyng scence, t enrches our conscousness by akng us acquanted wth new and valuable ways of thnkng so that we ay be ore aware of the unverse we lve n and the greatness of our Creator. But we should realze also that tools of scentfc ethod lke atheatcal equatons, logcal rules and dscplned observatons and so on are just eans, not ends. It s a great ntellectual venture to understand the structures of an and nature. When t coes to the "whys" and "wherefores" of one's exstence t can only be found n Chrst. The I-Thou relatonshp of everyan wth God cannot be found n a ethodology whch s subject to the law of developent tself. There are nfnte possbltes beyond the ltatons of the huan nd. I wonder how often we underestate the role of apprecaton and creaton and entangle ourselves n scentfc analyss and crtcs. If an can coe to know the ghty power and love of the Lord, he would coe to the realzaton of hs own fnteness n every feld of huan knowledge and stand n front of H wth an open heart sncerely, reverently and even subssvely wth fath. These are the words used by Betty Fell, edtor-n-chef of the 1959 Mlestone, n the chapel servce dedcatng ths yearbook. Dr. Vander Lugt, a eber of the Hope College staff for 6 years, receved ths dedcaton n chapel on Monday, May 11. He was recognzed as "the spokesan of a ost ntellgent, lucd, and effectve phlosophy of Chrstan educaton. Hope College students n the past two weeks have been seen busly preparng for exas at the Lake and Parks throughout the town. We heard for exaple Mr. Mohaed Sopee, Frst Secretary, Peranent Msson of the Federaton of Malaya to the Unted Natons, speakng for the Federaton of Malaya, and, for the ebers of the I.R.C. a well known and lked an, Mr. Martn Hutton, Edtor of the Malay Mal of Kuala Lupur, Malaya, suppled soe scattered nforaton. «* * * Or I could get excted about the speech and soe dubous expressons of Dr. Al Sastroadjojo, Peranent Representatve to the Unted Natons fro Indonesa. Each speaker presented a vew on the country he was falar wth, ether due to brth or work. The speeches were well prepared and for the ost part very flatterng for the new-born, ndependent states of South East Asa. * * * * * I notced the strong, natonalstc sentent, soetes apologzng for the lack of pace, but always very sure about the great future watng n the dapng dawn of the tropcs. Coplents and frendly bows were as nuerous as the cgarette sokers n front of Van Raalte between classes. We have to adt that we adre the progress and poltcal vctory of the Republc of Vetna, as dscussed by Dr. Weesley Fshel, Coordnator, Vetna Project, Departent of. Poltcal Scence, Mchgan State Unversty, or the stern and deterned course the Federaton of Malaya s followng n the dangerous waters of nternatonal poltcs. * * * * * But the coplete neglect of entonng the fruts of colonzaton, even as a contrast aganst the suppresson of the horrd thngs the colonal powers dd, bothered us. For we have to adt that, n spte of the loudly basooned horrors of colonals, t provded these countres wth the opportunty to becoe odern and a eber of the "world faly of natons." Wthout the hated Caucasan race, startng n the begnnng for personal profts but then expandng nto the educaton of top en, the buldng of schools, hosptals, etc., the people of South East Asa would never have attaned the place under the sun they have now, regardless of the hoarse cres for freedo and the vcts on both sdes for a cause that could have been settled by sound and cal conferences.

Worthal has had qute a facelftng fro the te he frst appeared n 1947 n the Unversty Daly Kansan. Worthal began as a coposte of the ost stupd characterstcs of 14 Bbler-drawn faces.
