1 NOVEMBER, 2012 TAKE HEART, GET UP, HE IS CALLING YOU There seems to be a theme in Mark s gospel readings over the last several weeks. In each story, somebody is blocked, by themselves or by others, from reaching Jesus James and John s missing Jesus call to service because they re too busy asking for positions of power in the kingdom of God; the rich young man who leaves rather than sell his possessions to follow Jesus; children who are barred from Jesus by the disciples. And finally, blind Bartimaeus calls Jesus from the side of the road and is told to be quiet. Persistent, he calls even louder, and Jesus overrides the crowd to call Bartimaeus, who is told, Take heart; get up, he is calling you! And Jesus greets him, asking, What do you want me to do for you? What a set of statements! And what happens if we hear them for us, today, at St. David s? First, Take heart; get up, he is calling you! And second, What do you want me to do for you? I really believe that these invitations are crucial to us during our stewardship focus. And they re crucial to us if we really seek to become unblocked in our path of following Jesus. We need to hear, time and again, that we are called by God, and that part of that call is identifying what we want God to do for us, with us, and through us, at this time and in this place. As I reflect on these questions for me, I know that what I want God to do for me is to unblock me. I can be my own worst enemy sometimes, overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, exhaustion, and a sense that I don t have enough. I don t always take the time to reflect on the many blessings that I ve received. I m reminded, though, of the passage from John s gospel, From God s fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. I want God to help me to have an open heart and open hands to receive this grace, and to rest in God s fullness. When I do, I find my hands unclenched, allowing the blessings and grace I ve received to flow through them to bless and grace others. This allows me to approach our annual ingathering of time, talent, and treasure with a full heart, making my offering out of a 1

2 sense of call, abundance, and goal rather than out of a sense of fear, scarcity, and obligation. So I invite each of us to join a conversation, asking: what is our sense of call as a community? What do we want God to do here at St. David s? And how does this shape our offering of time, talent, and treasure for 2013? E.S.G. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4 On this Sunday, we celebrate and give thanks for all the baptized, the saints known and unknown, who have made up the body of Christ from the very beginning of the Church. All Saints Sunday is one of the Church s baptismal occasions; we baptize new saints into Christ s body, the Church, celebrating their new birth into our ongoing life, which is even now the beginning of eternal life with God. We also celebrate our ingathering of our financial pledges made to support St. David s in IN OUR PRAYERS The following persons are being prayed for in our liturgies each week: Martha Ruth Whatley, Helen Applegate, Bob Carl, Kyle McCain, Dan Hinton, the Rev. Sherrill Page, Vencil Holbrook, Kay Nasser, Lee Schandler, Bob Wenger, Maggie Bowden, Jane Stranch, Malala Yousufzai, Patrick Hammock, Alona Parish, Laura Sanders, Tom Means, Carol Baker Koonce, Trisha Gillis, Florence Greenwood, Vlad Toma, the Nash Family, Colleen Davis, Clayton Reeve, Warren Vadell, Tom Cato, and Glenna Griffith. Comfort and relieve your servants, and give power of healing to those who minister to their needs We lift up all those who are expecting children: Gabrielle Kline, Regan Oakley Wilkinson, and Jill Proctor Utley. Grant to these unborn children a full term of nurture, the joy and mystery of life, and the blessing of your love We give thanks for the births of Pierce Bennett Robison, born to Kristina and Vaughan Robison, on October 4; and Craig Smith Tureau, born to Corinne and Zach Tureau, grandson of Molly Dale and Richard Smith, on October 21. We give you thanks, O God, for the blessing you have bestowed upon these families in giving them a child We remember those serving in the Armed Services of our country overseas: Turner Kazmerowski and Josh Anderson. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace 2

3 ONION RINGS by Norman Gillis Hume Fogg High School presents West Side Story: Lauren Rayhab is Maria West Side Story is the award winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs - the Caucasian Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and the Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending. Location: Hume Fogg High School Auditorium, 700 Broadway, Nashville, Show Dates and Times: Thursday, November 8: 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 9: 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 10: 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Students - $5, Adults - $10, Reserved Seats - $12 (in advance), call , ext for reservations Alert, Alert! A music stand is missing! If you have borrowed a black music stand from the church, PLEASE let us know. Remember to contact the church office for account information before making year end stock donations. WANTED: BOOKS, DVDs & CDs by Emily Brown It's time to clean out your media closet and bookcase! St. David's youth group is once again collecting old books, DVDs, and CDs to sell at the November 17 Holiday Bazaar. We will put our proceeds towards our activities fund and a charitable organization chosen by the youth. Please drop off materials in the marked bins around the church. HELP SPONSOR CHRISTMAS BACKPACKS FOR THE HOMELESS by Mike Caver St. David s holiday traditions include serving Nashville s homeless by feeding and providing a night s housing for homeless guests during the coldest months of the year. In recent years we ve also helped by providing 11 backpacks for the homeless with badly needed seasonal items-- warm gloves, scarves, socks, etc. St. David s parishioners who have hosted Room at the Inn testify how moving it is to see the gratitude of guests when our backpacks are distributed! Not surprising when you see how little they have when they enter. Your help is wanted to continue SPONSORING A BACKPACK ($50) OR PORTION THEREOF -- helping our most vulnerable fellow citizens better cope with winter. If you cannot sponsor an entire backpack, your gift with those of others will fulfill our commitment for 11 backpacks. For you and your family SPONSORSHIP is also a significant way to give thanks for our many blessings at the holiday season! Just use the sign-up sheet outside Sanders Hall, and as always your gift is tax deductible: make your check out to St. David s Church and note Backpack in the lower left corner. NOTE: A special table at November 17 s Best Ever Bazaar includes a backpack for you to see exactly what your SPONSORSHIP provides. 3

4 CONFIRMATION CLASS The rite of Confirmation is a mature, adult affirmation of one s faith, made by someone who has been baptized, whether as an infant or an adult. This year, we are offering a course of Confirmation preparation, led by Rick Greenwood, for six weeks on Sunday mornings, November 11, 18, 25, December 2, 9, and 16. This class is open to 16-year olds and older and will meet in the Henderson Room from 9:30 10:15 a.m. on each of those Sunday mornings. Bishop Bauerschmidt will make his annual visitation to St. David s on December 16. All are welcome. GODLY PLAY CLASSES DELIVER SUPPLIES FOR HOMELESS ANIMALS On Sunday, October 21, Nashville s homeless animals were visited at the Humane Society by several of the parish s families who were delivering supplies collected by the Godly Play classes during October. The staff and the animals were very happy to receive the children and the gifts. 5 SUNDAY MORNING BREAKFASTS by Carol Hornberger Thank you to all the chefs who have provided the delicious Sunday breakfasts this fall. There are still opportunities available to sign up to cook breakfast. Please remember to send your receipts to the church office so that we may reimburse you for food and supplies. ROOM IN THE INN As part of our continuing efforts to make a difference in the world around us, the families of the St. David s congregation will again host Room in the Inn at St Luke s Community House on the second Saturday of the winter months. We will begin on November 10, 2012, and continue through March 9, It remains a fact that many people will bed down outside tonight and every night that they cannot get a bunk at the Rescue Mission or another shelter. For whatever reasons for them to be homeless, there is an equally compelling reason for the families of our wonderful parish to extend a helping hand to provide some hot meals, a dry, safe place to sleep for the night, and a night of friendship for each of the men visiting us. My wife Deborah and I are honored to have the opportunity to lead our efforts for this wonderful program this year. We are asking for your help in helping our visitors share in Thanksgiving early. We look forward to seeing you at St. Luke s and want to thank you for your help in this wonderful parish outreach tradition. Opportunities to participate range from bringing prepared food for dinner or the next day s breakfast and lunch, washing the linens used, to spending the night with the guests. Please sign up on the sign-up sheet on the Mission/Outreach bulletin board. COME ONE, COME ALL, TO THE ST. DAVID S HOLIDAY BAZAAR! SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. by Joan Green Our craft-making days have become a wonderful way to socialize and let our creativity shine. There are tasks for those who just want to help out as well as for those who are feeling more creative. The next craft-making day will be Saturday, November 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please sign up or call the church office to let us know you will join us and if you will share the light lunch that will be provided. You can drop in for whatever time you have or join us for the day. We would love to have you. Sign-up sheets are posted outside Sanders Hall for various tasks the weekend of the Bazaar. We need PEOPLE POWER on Friday, November 16, to help with afternoon set-up. The next day we need people to work in shifts during the bazaar, as well as people to help with take-down. Calling all cooks and artists: Donations of prepared entrees, baked goods, and desserts, as well as homemade holiday treats are needed. Again, sign-up sheets and instructions are posted outside Sanders Hall. We also appreciate your contributions of handmade art or craft items and unique items for our Silent Auction area. And remember to bring a Christmas ornament you are ready to part with for the Christmas tree exchange, as well as used books, DVDs, or cads for the Youth Booth. Contact Joan Green: jellisgreen@aol.com, Lezette Thomason: Lezette@nashville.net, or Annette White: Annette.a.white@state.tn.us for general information. Jim Irwin (615)
