MAY, 2013 ST. DAVID S HAS A NEW YOUTH MINISTER: WELCOME, CONNOR McCRACKEN At the recommendation of our Youth Committee, and with the full support of the Rector and Vestry, St. David s has partnered with the Center for Youth Ministry Training (CYMT) in Brentwood in locating a youth minister for the parish. We have learned that Connor McCracken will be coming to us mid-summer. Connor will be working on a Master of Arts degree in youth ministry taught through a unique retreat-based, hybrid course formula developed by Memphis Theological Seminary. In addition to his course work, Connor will be involved with retreats and discussion groups, and he will be on site at St. David s 25 hours per week. Connor comes to us from Londonderry in Northern Ireland. He is the son of a youth pastor, and he has experience, relational gifts, and a real passion for youth ministry. All of this is actually breaking news, and as we move into the summer months, we will announce times and occasions when there will be opportunities to meet Connor, for him to have lunch or dinner with parishioners and youth. He will also maintain an office here at the church. At the moment, Connor is still across the pond, but I know he d love to hear from you via at connor_mccracken@hotmail.com. Please give him a warm St. David s welcome. E.S.G. 1

IN OUR PRAYERS We welcome by Letter of Transfer Kristina Enid Lopez Robison from St. Thomas Episcopal Church, San Antonio, Texas; and Donald Anthony (Tony), Allison, Ainsley Marie, Courtland Everett, and Brennan Elizabeth Brown from St. George s, Nashville. Strengthen your servants, O Lord, with your heavenly grace We give thanks for the baptisms on Easter Eve of Darcy Kathryn Grimenstein, infant daughter of Allison and Owen Grimenstein; and Grayson Tate Ochoa, infant son of Samantha Roberts and Pedro Ochoa, Jr. You are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism, and marked as Christ s own forever. The following persons are being prayed for in our liturgies each week: Gail Smith, Vlad Toma, Martha Ruth Whatley, Dale Sullivan, Nathan Hyde, Lee, Jack Chenoweth, Mark Dunn, Phyllis Cetrone, Johnny and Olga Porteus, Bob Sawyer, Sharon Little, Bob Zimmerman, Brayden Lee Wilcox, Tom Granger, and Stephen Bess. Comfort and relieve your servants, and give power of healing to those who minister to their needs We lift up all those who are expecting children: Andrea Zieher, Melinda Herlong, Edie Wear, Emmie McClain, Ellie Broemel Klausner, and Leah Grace Stewart. Grant to these unborn children a full term of nurture, the joy and mystery of life, and the blessing of your love We remember Josh Grace and John Germann who are serving in the Armed Services of our country overseas. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace We share in sorrow for those who have died, especially Patricia Jean Schaeffer Jordan, wife of Stephen Jordan, on April 10; and Martha Durnil Elliston, parishioner and widow of Basil W. Elliston, on April 20. HOLY BAPTISM The next regularly scheduled opportunity for the administration of the sacrament of Holy Baptism will be on the Feast of Pentecost, Sunday, May 19, at the 10:30 a.m. service. Please speak to one of the clergy or call the parish office if you have a candidate you would like to present. 2

ONION RINGS LET S ROAST THE RECTOR! by Norman Gillis by Judy Grace There are many people to thank for the beautiful Easter Day services, but there are some folks who performed above and beyond after the services on March 31. Those of us who had vehicles stuck in the mud want to thank the amazing St. David s pushers the guys who sacrificed their Sunday clothes and brunch plans to get our cars out of the yard and sent us on our way. We know the following helped, anybody else? Jason Spector, Louis Kirkpatrick, Les Wilkinson, & Rob Trumble. In addition to celebrating our first 50 years as a parish, this year also marks the 40th anniversary of Rick Greenwood s ordination and his 25th as rector of St. David s. One of the ways we are commemorating his tenure is ROASTING him. Plan to come! Who: St. David s family and friends What: Dinner and Roast When: Saturday, May 18, 6:00 p.m. Where: Temple Hills Golf Club Our webmaster Tom Mason has posted beautiful photos of the Easter flowers on the St. David s website. The photos were taken and sent to us by Richard Smith. Thank you, Richard! If you take photos at church events or activities and them to us, we can share them with the parish through our website, the Wild Onion, or our Facebook page. And we would be grateful to you for doing so. If you wish to attend but have not paid for your reservation, please send a check to St. David s, marked Rector Roast. The cost of the evening is $25.00 per person; all checks must be received in the church office by May 1. THE DIOCESEAN NEWSLETTER Jack Duke will be leaving on May 25 for Bogotá, Columbia, as an exchange student. He will spend three weeks there living with a family from a local high school. We are proud of him for being one of only three students Montgomery Bell Academy is sending on this trip to represent the school. To keep up with the rest of the diocese, visit the diocesan website, to view the monthly newsletter, Connections. Please mark your calendars for these future 2013 events: News from St. Thomas: Madison Hamilton has been promoted to a "Charge Nurse" after less than 6 months on the job as a nurse there. A charge nurse is in charge of the floor during a shift. Also, she will be starting day shifts, which she reports being the best part! May 12: Christian Formation end of the year celebration June 15: Open House for John & Mackie Rice June 16: The Rev. John F. Rice, Jr. preaches at both services and joins the Adult Forum June 26: Parish Swim & Supper at Richard & Molly Dale Smith s home Sept. 15: Rally Day Sept. 22: The Rt. Rev. Don E. Johnson preaches at both services and joins the Adult Forum Nov. 3: The Rev. Anne B. Bonnyman preaches at both services and joins the Adult Forum Dec. 15: The Rt. Rev. John C. Bauerschmidt preaches at both services and joins the Adult Forum; Baptism and Confirmation at the 10:30 a.m. service Congratulations to Lauren Rayhab who graduates from Hume Fogg High School this month. And to Daryl Wilkinson who receives her Masters of Education in Special Education Program for Visual Disabilities. Hooray! NOTE FROM THE CLERGY It is important that all who wish to participate in parish events be able to do so. Please speak to one of the clergy if you ever wish to attend an event but do not feel that you have the funds to participate. 4

ST. DAVID S CELEBRATES THE FIRST FIFTY: by Dotty Rogers John B. and Miriam Ezell Downey Jack Downey enjoyed sitting behind Miriam Ezell in high school and college. Miriam contends the reason was so he could look over Miriam s shoulder and see her work. Miriam graduated from the University of Chattanooga and began to teach first grade, even though she wanted to teach kindergarten at a consolidated school just outside of Chattanooga. For the next four years she taught first grade through high school. Before retiring from teaching she had taught English, science, biology, geography and algebra. One of her students, James High, became the Commander of the First Nuclear Submarine in the U.S. Navy. While still living in Chattanooga, Miriam, her father and her mother helped establish the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Lookout Mountain. Years later in 1977, Harold Hallock from St. David s was installed as Assistant Rector of that parish and a busload of St. David s parishioners attended the service. Jack won Miriam s hand in marriage, winning over nine other marriage proposals, and they were married at All Saints Church in Atlanta on September 28, All Saints has a special meaning to Miriam; it was where her greatgrandfather, Bishop Armstrong, had been rector for many years. Later, Jack served in World War II as an officer in the Air Force. Eighteen months of his European tour was spent in a Prisoner of War Camp. Their first son, John B. Downey, Jr., was born on December 29, He was followed by three brothers Rodney, and twins Billy and Richard. Miriam who was hoping for a girl found herself the mother of four handsome sons. Jack was an attorney for the Veterans Administration in Murfreesboro before moving the family to Nashville in There, he continued to work for the Veterans Administration until he found the real estate 5 and construction business more to his liking. The Downeys owned and developed a very large tract of land, much of which is now known as West Meade. Downey Development also built the property along Davidson Road known as the Downey Center, where Drew s Market is currently located. Cale Hahn from St. George s approached Jack for the purchase of the property on which St. David s now sits. Both Jack and Miriam have been very instrumental in the life and growth of St. David s with Jack s serving on many committees. Miriam was very active in women s groups and conducted many classes, including a fun Yoga class, for over twenty years. The Downeys opened their home and swimming pool to both St. David s adults and youth groups many times. In the spirit of the Biblical story on talents, one year the Downeys gave everyone in the parish five dollars with the understanding they use the money to increase their talents. Cookies, dinners, wooden toys, hand-work, and crosses made from tree limbs were made and sold, making the project very successful. It was fun for children and adults alike, and a lesson was learned by all. A fun side note to how close the St. David s family is this story: when Miriam s sister, Alma, was married in 1942 at St. Paul s, Chattanooga, Fr. Rick s father, the late Rev. Dr. Eric S. Greenwood, played the music at the wedding. Miriam, now at a golden gentle age, still swims almost every day and maintains her command post from her home on Laurel Ridge Drive. CHILDREN S WORSHIP & GODLY PLAY by Jennifer Sanders Children's worship and Godly Play will continue to meet through May 12 (Mother's Day). Below is a schedule of what to expect for the remaining weeks: May 5: Hike (Godly Play Story - New Way to Know Jesus) May 12: End-of-Year Celebration If you have any questions please contact me at sandersjd@comcast.net, or

Dotty Rogers has agreed to share the recipe for the delicious leg of lamb served at the Seder Meal on March 23. The recipe follows: Easy Easter Leg of Lamb (I used boneless lamb roast instead of a leg of lamb.) 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon paprika 1 tablespoon dried rosemary 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1-3 ½ to 4 pound boneless leg of lamb 1/3 cup olive oil Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place a rack in a 10 X 16 X 2 inch (or a pan that will hold your lamb easily) roasting pan. In a small bowl combine the garlic, paprika, salt, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and pepper. Make slits on the lamb and rub the mixture into the slits and over the outside of the surface. Rub with olive oil. Place roast on the rack. Roast uncovered for 1 ½ to 2 hours or until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees for medium. To serve: Carve the lamb into thin slices. This makes approximately 8 to 10 servings. May 6 May 15 May 27 May 28 MAY ANNIVERSARIES Sue & David Strayhorn Linda Heft & John Maiberger Claudia & John Patton Cathy Hinton & David Livingston THE SUNDAY SUPPER CLUB CONTINUES by the Rev.
