1 ST. FRANCIS OCTOBER, 2011 Imagine reading a headline in the Living section of the Tennessean: Paris Hilton to surrender all of her wealth and position to join the Sisters of Poverty. Would you be: a.) surprised? b.) shocked? c.) in a state of disbelief? or d.) all of the above? That s a contemporary window into how those who knew Giovanni Francesco Bernardone (aka Francis of Assisi) might have reacted when he proclaimed that he was giving up money, music, fancy clothes, and partying to follow Christ and to wed Lady Poverty. The one big difference between this story and the story about Paris Hilton is that the one about Francis is true which makes it also exceptional and inspirational. When it comes to saintly popularity, no one tops the charts or gets more universal recognition than St. Francis: the patron saint of animals, ecology, and Italy. St. Francis really did talk the talk, and walk the walk as he lived his life in response to the call he heard to hold back nothing of yourselves for yourselves, so that he who gives himself totally to you may receive you totally. So, what s St. Francis got to do with us? I think the answer in a word is a lot! Whether we look at Francis dramatic transformation as a metaphor for our own personal and spiritual transformation, or his love of animals and mother earth as a guide for how we might likewise embrace those concepts with real action, or how we might shape advice to hold back nothing into a meaningful stewardship response, Francis embodies a perfect and perfectly human example of Christ s servanthood to humankind. I admit that the notion of giving away all my clothes and worldly possessions (even my iphone!) as St. Francis did is more than I can imagine. And I am inspired by his life and work as an example for my own stewardship of the environment, of my animal companions, and of the financial gifts I give, remembering that all things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee. E.S.G. 1

RETHINKING STEWARDSHIP, PART II by Emily Rowell Brown In October, the Adult Forum class continues to explore what it means to exercise responsible and meaningful stewardship, attempting to discern together what it means to care for God s creation faithfully. What does how we treat our bodies, our fellow creatures, and our surrounding world say about us and our convictions? Join us as we look at practical, real world examples of stewardship played out on the ground in the messiness of our lives. ST. DAVID S GETS TECH-SAVVY! Follow St. David's on the web! We now have a Facebook page that you can "like" in order to stay updated on St. David's news, to share favorite pictures, and to connect with fellow St. David s parishioners. Look for us at the page St. David's Episcopal Church. We have begun a blog to document our life together at St. David's, everything from Adult Forum notes, book recommendations, recaps and photos of events. 4 Our Children s Worship and Godly Play program is geared for children age 3 through 4th Grade. We meet each Sunday at 9:15 in the Walling Children s Chapel for a 15- minute Children s Worship service. The children are fully involved in this service, acting as lectors, oblationists, and acolytes; adults are invited to attend this service. Then the children are dismissed to their Godly Play classes as follows: Godly Play I: age 3-pre K Godly Play II: Kindergarten -1st Grade Godly Play III: 2nd-4th Grade. They return to the Walling Children s Chapel for a blessing and dismissal song at 10:15 Children are then welcome to attend the 10:30 service in the nave with their parents or may use our nursery, if they are in Kindergarten or younger. The Godly Play I and II classes will be studying the Old Testament in the fall and the New Testament in the winter and spring. The Godly Play III class is in year two of its rotation (year 1: Old Testament; year 2: New Testament; year 3: Saints and review) so will be focusing on the New Testament. Join us at 9:15 in the Walling Children s Chapel for Children s Worship before the classes begin. LIVING THE QUESTIONS 2.0 IS COMING TO ST. DAVID S by the Rev. Molly Dale Smith LTQ2 arrives on October 9 As announced in the September Wild Onion, Living The Questions 2 begins on Sunday, October 9, and continues meeting on Sunday nights through November 20. My own mentor Tex Sample introduces many of the sessions. After hearing from some experts we will try to sort out implications for our own faith. I will serve as the LTQ2 organizer and session facilitator. Each session will conclude with a concrete spiritual practice that will help us to continue exploration of the evening topic. Sign up is essential for participation in this new opportunity. Tuesday, October 4 is the registration deadline. Call or the church office to sign up. THE HELP with

5 The Rev. Dolores Nicholson by Molly Dale Smith The Monday Bible has invited the Rev. Dolores Nicholson to join us for a special conversation about The Help on Saturday, October 8, at 10:30 This special event is open to the entire congregation. The Help, both movie and book, describes three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960 s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. The movie has received accolades for its acting, and our own Howard Fox was involved in the production. The movie reminds us of a past that many of us experienced. While there is general acclaim for the acting and production values, The Help addresses subjects that continue to be controversial today. In fact, the Association of Black Women Historians has a strong critique of the movie. Dolores Nicholson, a long-time friend of St. David s, will lead us in discussion of the movie and in particular African-American response. The Rev. Dolores Nicholson is an African American deacon who serves Christ Church Cathedral. She was ordained to the diaconate at St. David s and was one of the models in the Mekong Blue Fashion Show in Please join us in Sanders Hall on October 8 for a stimulating and enlightening conversation. A WORD ON HOLY BAPTISM The Book of Common Prayer designates certain days in the liturgical year as being especially appropriate for the celebration of Holy Baptism.
