4 For All the Saints Page 4 St. Nicholas Bazaar.... We wish to thank all who helped to make our bazaar a success. Once again Bristol Hall was transformed into our festive St. Nicholas Bazaar. Whether you were a worker or a shopper, a donator of goods or one of our fantastic cooks or bakers, it was the combined effort of everyone that made it so successful. This is one event that involves many in our parish family working together and sharing their many talents. This year we were blessed with a beautiful (though windy) day that brought us many shoppers. Our net profit to date is about $6,565. This is a tad better than last year and enables us to support our outreach programs including special donations to hurricane victims as well as our Student service awards and providing for our church needs. Thank you again to all who made this possible. Lois Eberhart and Linda Graham Holiday Outreach.... It s time again for the giving tree, now it s up to you and me. For children whose families are in need, We help St. Gregory s..they do more than feed. It s for children big and small to have a happy holiday, after all. The ornaments bear children s age and gender, So, All Saints angels, time for a shopping bender!! Won t you pick an ornament for Bobby or Jen, And drop off your goodies, unwrapped, by December 10. Please stop by the Christmas tree located between the church and Bristol Hall and pick an ornament or two to help make the holiday a little brighter for a child. The ornaments will indicate age and gender. HAVE YOU RETURNED YOUR COMPLETED PLEDGE CARD? If you have already done so, many, many thanks! If you have yet to do so, please return it as soon as possible.

5 For All the Saints Page 5 Outreach.... Writing this on the day after Thanksgiving, I am proud that All Saints Church supports so many Outreach activities and programs throughout the year, and I am thankful that our parishioners join us so enthusiastically. Most know we provide an evening meal, on the last Tuesday of the month, and we serve friends who attend, as well as delivery to our Inreach parishioners. We support the Camp Faith summer program put on by our sister church, St. Paul s Camden. This year we sponsored four children to attend the camp, and gave the counselors a fun day in Bay Head with a BBQ, a day at the beach, and ice cream treats. We join with other community churches and provide a Friendship Dinner yearly each September. We have asked parishioners to fill grocery bags with goods for the families at St. Gregory s Pantry to enjoy a Labor Day picnic. Bristol Hall overflowed with Easter Baskets and we are now asking for toys for Christmas for the families at St. Gregory s. We are responding to the national tragedies of flooding and destruction after Hurricanes Florence and Michael, and the wildfires in California, with a loose plate collection and a donation from the Outreach Funds. Our newest outreach effort is Family Partners with Dress-to-Impress, suits and men s clothes to wear for job interviews and employment. Outreach takes many forms at ASC; among others, the Church School children outdo themselves every year with Hearts for Hope, raising funds for St. Gregory s and those at Mary s Table. We believe in reaching out to those who need assistance. We re happy you continue to join us. Women s Guild.... Our next meeting will be Tuesday, December 18 at noon for our Christmas party, covered dish and giving tree. Please bring a dish or dessert to serve 6-8 people and $10 or more for the giving tree. A donation for St. Gregory s Pantry would also be appreciated. Looking ahead: Our January meeting will be our annual cards/games day on the 15th. Bay Head Christmas Walk and Tree Lighting.... Bay Head will hold its annual Christmas Walk on Friday, December 7. All Saints will be open to visitors from 5:30-8:30 pm. We will be serving Christmas cookies, lighting our Christmas tree at 6:45 pm and singing Christmas carols. We need volunteers to bake their favorite treats and greeters to welcome visitors. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in Bristol Hall. Any questions, please contact Julie Chowansky ( ) or Priscilla Hiby ( ).

6 For All the Saints Page 6 Stewardship.... Calling All Disciples at All Saints Our Stewardship Campaign for 2019 is in high gear, but we still haven t heard from all of you. As of shortly before Thanksgiving we have received 70 pledges totaling $144,000. That gets us almost three-quarters of the way toward our goal of $200,000. Many thanks to all who have pledged, regardless of the amount of your pledge. For those who have yet to turn in a completed pledge card, please don t wait any longer. Mail or bring your card to All Saints today. There are also cards in the Narthex and Parish Hall. If you can t find one, please ask an usher or vestry member. Discipleship is the theme of our stewardship drive for We are all called to be disciples. Not just by our words but by our actions as well, we strengthen our Christian community here at All Saints Church in Bay Head. As you can see from the pie chart in Bristol Hall, our pledge dollars support a variety of activities and services. From our worship services, our Christian Education programs, our in-reach for our fellow parishioners and our outreach to the community at large, we reaffirm our discipleship and our commitment to one another. Your generous financial support is vital to maintaining our spiritual home. Please pledge today! Blessings, The Stewardship Committee Envelope Giving.... This year we are going to try a different approach to our giving envelopes. We will give a set of envelopes to all of our parishioners. These sets will allow you to bring your gifts to the service or easily mail them. There will also be opportunities to support various outreach programs and the wonderful music programs at Easter and Christmas. They will be available on December 9 and 16 in Bristol Hall.

7 For All the Saints Page 7 They were all of them saints of God.... A correction is in order. In my previous article I wrote that our Casavant Frères organ was ordered in This was incorrect. The contract for the purchase of our Casavant organ was signed on September 26, The purchase price was $36,500, which in today s dollars would be approximately $207,890. The contract called for Casavant to complete the installation of the organ on or about Easter Easter that year was on April 14 th ; the installation of the new organ was completed as of March 26 th. The story of how we acquired our Casavant Frères organ, made by one of the premier organ makers in the world, begins in 1941 with the retirement of Maria Emlen Hall Studdiford, who had served as All Saints organist since Lee Hastings Bristol, a summer resident of Bay Head, filled in as organist for short while, but in the autumn of 1942 he was called to service with the Army. Maria came out of retirement until Lee was able to assume the regular role of organist and choir master when he returned in Lee, in his early 20s at the time, was already an accomplished organist. The organ Lee sat down to was the original organ from the 1890s that had been a gift donated in the memory of his wife by Rodman Wanamaker of Philadelphia. Rodman was the son of John Wanamaker, the founder of the Philadelphia department store that bore his name. The Wanamakers had a home in Bay Head, and, I suspect, were friends of the Littells and Halls through their membership at Saint James the Less Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Lee Bristol was a man of many interests and talents who was passionate about church music. After graduating from Hamilton College in 1947 with a degree in music he earned a Licentiate in Organ from Trinity College of Music in London and continued his graduate studies at the Institute for International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1948 until 1962 he worked in New York for the family business, the Bristol-Meyers Company, in advertising and public relations. In 1962 he was named president of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, a position he held until The College, founded in 1922, was then and is today a world famous residential college of music with four-year undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music degree and a graduate program leading to Master of Music and Master of Music Education degrees. In Lee s final year at Westminster the school added to its exceptional collection of organs a new organ made by Casavant Frères. One of the designers of the organ was Joan Lippincott, a graduate of Westminster s master s program, and who, during Lee s presidency, was named the head of Westminster s world-class organ department. Joan developed into a gifted and renowned organist who gave hundreds of organ recitals throughout the United States between 1955 and Stephen Pinel studied under Ms. Lippincott when he was a student at Westminster, and he had the opportunity to meet Lee Bristol. Stephen believes it was Joan Lippincott who nudged Lee toward Casavant Frères when he conceived the idea of acquiring a new organ for All Saints. I am indebted to Ramsay Fisher and Stephen Pinel for their contributions to this article. Ramsay s history provided key facts concerning Lee Bristol s role in the acquisition of our organ. Stephen provided a wealth of information about his alma mater and the actual purchase and installation of our organ. Mark Durham
