1 JUNE, 2013 THE REV. JOHN FAY RICE Rector of St. David s, by Dotty Rogers John Fay Rice was born in Philadelphia, grew up and graduated from high school in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Southwestern at Memphis in 1963 with a Degree in International Studies. John attended Presbyterian Seminary in Atlanta, and completed his Master of Divinity degree at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, in He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree at McCormack Seminary in Chicago in John married Maxine Allen Mitchel, affectionately known as Mackie, on May 30, (They just celebrated their 49 th anniversary!) They are the proud parents of two sons, both of whom graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy. Elder son Ted lives here in Nashville with his wife, Kelley, where he is Deputy Director of Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Association. Son John Henry is the Curator of the South Asian Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. John and Mackie have three beautiful grandchildren. John began his ministry at the Church of the Ascension, Knoxville, in He was called to be Vicar of the Church of the Holy Apostles, Memphis, in He accepted a call to be Rector of St. David s in During his tenure here, John oversaw the design and construction of what is now Sanders Hall. Included in the plans was the first handicap entrance to the nave of the church. He also worked in partnership with Abintra Montessori School that grew quickly and now resides in much larger facilities on Davidson Drive. With John s encouragement for women to enter the ministry, Donna Scott and Mary Jane Levitch entered seminary during the mid 1980 s. Since his time here at St. David s, John has served as Rector of Trinity Church, Huntington, West Virginia, Chaplain to Marshall University, Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Massachusetts in Boston, and Rector of Trinity Church, Arlington, Virginia. After 1

2 retiring in 2001, John and Mackie moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where they settled into an 1850 s farm house. John may be retired from active church duties, but he keeps very busy as a supply and interim priest. He and Mackie journey each October to New York where John serves as Chaplain at the House of the Redeemer for a month. Then in March each year, they pack their bags and journey south to the Island of St. Barthelemy in the Caribbean where he assists at St. Bartholomew s Anglican Church for a month. For enjoyment, John plays tennis, paints, and enjoys his many civic responsibilities in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. We are pleased and very proud to welcome Fr. John and Mackie Rice back to St. David s. Please join us for an Open House on Saturday, June 15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in Sanders Hall. Fr. John will also preach at both services on Sunday, June 16, and will share his thoughts on our first 50 years at St. David s during the Adult Forum hour. 3 ONION RINGS by Norman Gillis Congratulations to Sydney Gaspard who received the Director s Award for her outstanding leadership skills as Primary Field Commander of the Hillwood High School Marching Band this season. And to her brother, Aaron Gaspard, chosen by the Iroquois Steeplechase Organization to be the primary bugler for all Steeplechase races on Saturday, May 11. Aaron was infield and performed in front of 20,000 people. He represented the Hillwood High School Band. Lynda Christiansen says, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! to all the kind souls that pitched in and provided Sunday breakfasts. Each meal was wonderful. She appreciates all your dedication and hard work and we say the same back to her! Amid much fanfare and celebration, Joey Jolie graduated on May 24, from Currey Ingram Academy, which he has attended for the past 13 years. His final week included a scholarly presentation of a Capstone Project on the subject of steroids and baseball, as well as a graduation speech. Proud grandparents, Carolyn and Chester Schmidt, aunt and uncle, Pam and Chad Schmidt, and cousins Emerson and Mary Clark Schmidt, all enjoyed the festivities of this grand occasion. Next fall Joey will attend Aquinas College with plans to study nursing. "As a result of information received at the Rector's Roast, a committee has been formed to establish a retirement fund for Fr. Rick (which, please God, is a long way away). The objective is to create a shoe-shine stand at the diocesan convention where Fr. Rick can showcase his shoe-shining talent as well as offer a side line of socks and shoelaces in liturgically correct colors. If in his efforts Fr. Rick flushes too deeply, a bottle of scotch whiskey will be readily available." DAVID S CELEBRATES THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS: by Dotty Rogers Before the columbium was built, there were members of the parish who wished to have their ashes scattered at St. David s. A place was made on the hillside for this purpose. Here are remembrances of a few whose ashes are scattered there. Merridee McCray was a young mother with four small children when she and husband Tom arrived at St. David s. Her baking talent was extraordinary, especially her fresh hot Kaka bread with freshly grated cheese melting on the top. Her pies were the first to go at bake sales. Merridee was instrumental in getting a weekly Bible study and healing service with Fr. Sam Hulsey started. She always dreamed of owning her own bakery, realizing this dream when she, with help from Tom, opened a small bakery and sandwich shop in a log cabin in Fairview. The business grew so fast that they soon relocated to a larger building in Franklin, where Merridee s Breadbasket grew very quickly. Merridee still attended Bible study and sang in the choir. Her commitment to her family and St. David s was strong. Merridee died of cancer in 1994, but her bakery still holds her name and serves the fine food that Merridee was very proud to serve. Though Merridee s ashes are scattered on the hill, we can feel her faith and love that surrounds St. David s. Dottie and Dutch Schneider lived in a quiet two-story house with a big, but very shady, back yard. Dottie, who wanted a vegetable garden, convinced Dutch to plant evergreens along the front of their property so she could plant her vegetables in a sunny location and not offend the neighbors. In addition to gardening, Dottie served as St. David s Altar Guild Chairperson and was active in the founding of the This-n-That Thrift Shop. Over the years, she was also active in many diocesan positions. Both Dottie and Dutch sang in the choir; Dutch was noted for his chant of the Magnificat at Morning Prayer. Like many others, they played with the St. David s Bridge Group. Dutch was also active in the men s group and served as Senior Warden in Dutch died in 1992, and Dottie, two years later. They look down at us each Sunday with their smiles of approval. Another one of St. David s hill saints is Bill Singley who, along with Joe Brown, helped keep the heating and cooling system working even when the system did not want to work. Bill served as Junior Warden and then was Senior Warden Bill and his wife, Ruth, raised three children at St. David s. Bill and Ruth were both active members of the St. David s Bridge Group, among the many other activities that St. David s offered. There is a story of Bill s care and kindness for St. David s people. Bill was in the church office on a very sunny Monday talking to Fr. John Rice s secretary, Betsy MacPherson. The sun was coming through the windows blinding both Betsy s work and vision of Bill. When Betsy came to work Tuesday morning, there was a blind installed at the window. She found out later that Bill had come in late Monday night and installed the window blind. Bill joined the others on the hill in November, We shall always be grateful for the efforts Bill made for the comfort of those who sit in the pews today. 5

5 Fr. Frank Robert was a wise, quiet, and patient cleric who was always there when St. David s needed a priest or a helping hand. He served as interim priest on several occasions for St. David s. Frank always had an open door and a willing ear to anyone who needed to talk. He and his wife, Donna, were very active members of the parish. Their daughter, Mary, was the first woman to be ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of Tennessee. Frank and Donna provided support and stability in many ways to a young parish. Frank s ashes were scattered on the hill in Ken Rogers could be called the snow removal king (when we used to have lots of snow). His elder son David owned a 1950 s Jeep, and when Ken found a snow plow that would fit on the front of the Jeep, he would borrow it and plow the church s driveway and parking lot, while the other men from the church cleared steps, walks, and porches. Ken helped his sons build the first children s playground and cut the trail through the woods behind the church for their Eagle Scout projects. He also served as Senior Warden in At the request of the Altar/Flower Guild chairpersons, Ken made the wooden stands for flowers and plants that are used for Feast Day decorations; he also made the wooden rings that hold the alms bags. He belonged to the men s group and St. David s Bridge Group. Ken joined the other St. David s faithful on the hill in We are thankful as we remember past members and their contributions to St. David s. Bloomin' Onions BBQ! Call Stephanie at ENDOWMENT FUND NEWS The Vestry took action on May 14, upon the recommendation of the Endowment Fund Committee, and two grants were made in the amount of $ each to the East Nashville Hope Exchange and to the Rooftop Foundation. An additional grant of $ from the Flo Jenkins Memorial Music Scholarship Fund was awarded to Lauren Rayhab as she begins her study at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this fall. Endowment Fund Committee member Stephanie Spector was also re-elected to a full three-year term. 6 STEWARDSHIP: A YEAR-ROUND INITIATIVE by Annette Pilcher Episcopalians usually have two words they would rather not hear: the E-word (evangelism) and the S-word (stewardship). Over the next few months we will reduce the terror of the S-word. Stewardship is about all that we do with all that we have. We may not know it, but we are practicing stewardship all of the time. Between now and the stewardship campaign in the fall, I will interview several members of the congregation about how they practice stewardship. They are young and old and in all stages of the life cycle. My first interviewee is Brian Huskey. Brian is a single dad (daughter, Min Xi) who works for Urban Housing Solutions. His principal occupation is finding housing for the homeless and providing support after they are housed. What did you do before you worked for Urban Housing Solutions? The first years of my professional life, I worked as a professional musician, talent agent, and manager. I sold my business in What is your educational background? I am a graduate of Aquinas College, and I have attended Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. What are you most likely doing on Friday evening? If this is a week-end Min Xi is with me, I am preparing for her arrival. If not I am usually working late. What is the latest book you have read? Mansion on the Hill, by Fred Goodman. The theme is the collision of rock music and commercial music and how music became big business. What is your favorite hymn? When I survey the Wondrous Cross. What is your favorite bibilical stewardship story? The Widow s Mite the widow was giving all that she had. When did stewardship become important to you? When I chaired the stewardship campaign at St. Augustine s at Vanderbilt. Why do you give to the Church? My theology of giving is inextricably linked to my concept of love so beautifully articulated by St. Paul in I Corinthians 13. I give whatever I am able to give as an act of love. Be it a financial offering, or the gift of self in terms of leadership on the Vestry, serving as a lector or as a LEM, I love my St. David s family. Whatever I am able to give is an offering of love given to God because I see God in each person here. Have you remembered the Church in your will? Yes.
