DAVID S ANNUAL PARISH MEETING Sunday, January 13, :15 a.m. in the nave Mark the date and time for St. David s Annual Parish Meeting when we will elect four members to the Vestry Class of To be eligible to serve on the Vestry, one must be at least 18 years old, a confirmed Episcopalian, and a communicant of St. David s Church, having been either confirmed here or received by Letter of Transfer from another parish. Vestry members are expected: to be involved in the programs, activities, and spiritual life of the parish; to be regular in attendance and worship, to attend monthly Vestry meetings (held on the second Tuesday of the month), the annual Vestry retreat, and other meetings when scheduled; to practice proportionate giving with an awareness of the tithe as the biblical standard of giving; to assume a leadership role in the parish; and to be willing to serve as a liaison to a cluster or a committee. Please look closely at the enclosed biographical information of the slate which has been compiled by the Nominating Committee (the outgoing Vestry Class of 2007). According to our by-laws, one hundred persons constitute a quorum, eligible voters must be confirmed, must be 16 years of age, and must be present to vote. No proxy or absentee voting is allowed. Annual reports will be made by clergy and lay leaders, and the 2007 year-end financials will be presented. The budget for 2008, which was adopted by the Vestry on December 11, 2007, is enclosed with this special edition of the Wild Onion. E.S.G.
NOTES AND REMINDERS FOR JANUARY, 2008 Congratulations to the Rev. John R. Kuenneth on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on the Feast of the Epiphany, Sunday, January 6. He will be our celebrant that day at the 10:30 a.m. service. Lori Kuenneth will host a festive breakfast buffet in Sanders Hall beginning at 8:45 a.m. in John s honor. Join us, too, for our annual Feast of Lights service on January 6, beginning at 6 o clock in the evening in the chapel. Children are invited to dress up as kings/queens for this candlelight service. A pot-luck supper will follow in Sanders Hall. Please come and bring a dish to share. St. David s hosts Room in the Inn at St. Luke s Community House, 5601 New York Avenue, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 12. Please volunteer! Check the sign-up sheet on the Sanders Hall bulletin board, and/or call Mary Jo and Tony Howland ( ), Kathie Dougan ( ), or Emily and Thunder Jones ( ) for more information. Volunteers are needed to bring dinner items, lunch snacks, and breakfast sausage biscuits. We also are in need of five 2XL sweatshirts. The Vestry will meet with the new Class of 2010 at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15. Dinner in Sanders Hall will precede the meeting at 6:30 p.m. The 176 th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Tennessee will assemble on Friday and Saturday, January at St. Bartholomew s Church, Nashville. In addition to the clergy of our parish, the lay delegates from St. David s, elected at the December 11 Vestry meeting, are: Bill Gish, Judy Grace, and Susan Huggins. Alternates are: Betty Lentz, Lyle McLevain, and Annette Pilcher. Please keep the convention and the delegates in your thoughts and prayers. A new flower chart is on the Sanders Hall bulletin board for those who would like to give flowers on any given Sunday during It is the perfect way to honor or memorialize a person or event. The weekly cost is sixty dollars. Sunday morning breakfasts continue each week ($3.00/hot, $2.00/cold) under Lynda Christiansen s leadership. Chefs are always needed. Proceeds from these popular and delicious meals go into a designated account called the kitchen fund, which helps cover costs associated with the operation of the kitchen, i.e., dishwasher, microwave, etc. Many, many thanks to Lynda and to all of our chefs who have so generously provided for us since Rally Day last September: Linda Heft and John Maiberger, Debbie McDougall, Carolyn Avery, Annette Pilcher, the Daughters of the King, Mary Leigh and Scott Rayhab, Dot Williams, Susan Moore, Jennifer and Raymond Leathers, Mary Lou Pierce, and Kathy Carlson. 2
ANNUAL PARISH MEETING BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF NOMINEES FOR VESTRY JANUARY 13, 2008 JOE BROWN I have been a member of St. David s since I have served three terms on the Vestry and during those terms have served as Senior Warden twice and Junior Warden four times. I have also served several times as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer and was a member of the Finance Committee for several years. I was appointed Church Attorney by Bishop Herlong in 1995 to prosecute misconduct by priests on behalf of the diocese. I served in that capacity until I am a member of the Constitution and Canons Committee of the diocese and served as a delegate to the annual diocesan convention in 2001 and was elected as an alternate delegate for this year s diocesan convention. I am concerned with the financial condition of St. David s and the upkeep of its physical plant. On the diocesan level, I want to work for unity in the church. BILL GISH St. David's has been the spiritual and social home for Susan and me for 29 years. Our sons were raised and confirmed and one was married at St. D's and his daughter baptized here. I've been Junior and Senior Warden, served a couple of terms on the Vestry, been on a number of committees, and in the choir, in addition to being a delegate to several diocesan conventions. I was on the rector search team when Rick came. I've also had several positions at the diocesan level: the Episcopate Committee, two terms on Bishop and Council, the Commission on Ministry, and am currently on the steering committee for Continuing Episcopalians of Tennessee. TONY HOWLAND I am a cradle Episcopalian having been confirmed in New York State. After many years I began attending Saint David s in Both my wife, Mary Jo, and daughter, Rachael, were confirmed at Saint David s. In my time at Saint David s I have served as an usher and a lay reader and taught Sunday school. For several years along with Mary Jo I have been Saint David s Room in the Inn Coordinator. I am a retired manager from Cigna and recently retired from Paradigm Group. I feel that these are challenging times for the Episcopal Church and Saint David s. I would like to offer my services on the Vestry to help meet those challenges. ROB JOHNSON Rob Johnson and his family have been at St. David s for over a year now, after moving over from St. Augustine s Chapel on the Vanderbilt campus. He d do anything he could to serve the St. David s community. A Morristown native and Davidson College graduate, he worked for two decades as a journalist at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Commercial Appeal in Memphis and at The Tennessean. For the past two and a half years, he has worked as the communications director for the Tennessee Department of Children s Services, the state s public child welfare agency. He lives in West Meade. His wife is Michelle Mowery Johnson. His daughter, Sophie, is 11; Caroline is 4 and Alex is about to turn 1. I was director of corporate communications for Service Merchandise for 20 years and will retire from the faculty of Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School in May. St. David's and the Episcopal Church have been an integral part of my life and I'll be glad to serve another term on the Vestry if elected. 3
STEPHEN JORDAN I m fairly new to Saint David s, having transferred my membership from Christ Church Cathedral in the fall of While I benefited greatly from the centering prayer group (a religious discipline that I continue to practice on my own) that met during the religious education hour on Sundays, I had a felt need for the connectedness of a smaller parish, a connectedness I have found at Saint David s. In this regard I regularly attend the Adult Forum and the 10:30 service, and I serve as a counter, LEM, and usher. Reared Methodist, I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church at Saint Peter s Cathedral in Helena, Montana, having moved there in After visiting the local Methodist church and the local Lutheran church, I tried Saint Peter s, which was the first time I had ever been to an Episcopal service, and there I felt the presence of the Lord and decided that this was the church for me. At Saint Peter s, I graduated from EFM and served as Junior Warden and Senior Warden. Patricia and I were married in 1990 (we met in Helena), and the following year our son Thomas was born, afflicted with microcephaly. He died fourteen months later in We moved to Nashville in I work as a law librarian at Vanderbilt s law school, and Patricia works part-time as associate director of a program that focuses on rediscovering the art of making change without making enemies. The balance of her time is for art, specifically, print-making and painting. Both of us have law degrees and are on inactive status with our respective bar associations. I have a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of Memphis (I m a native of Memphis) and a master s in library science from the University of Tennessee. Working out, yoga, reading literature, cooking, and listening to music are pastimes. I m honored to be considered for the Vestry. JACI KITCH Our family has been a part of St. David s for nearly 25 years, coming to the church in I have been on both the Altar Guild and Flower Guild, have been the Associate Treasurer and have been a member of the Vestry, serving as both Junior Warden and Senior Warden. My St. David s family has been unbelievably supportive of my family and me this past year, and I offer myself as a candidate for the Vestry as one small way of repaying all the wonderful kindnesses I have received. DEBBIE McDOUGALL I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Nashville in 1963 when I married Wylie McDougall. We are blessed to have three children and six grandchildren here in Nashville. In 1962 I graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, with a B.A. in English. In addition, I have taken some graduate courses in psychology. I taught English for a couple of years and have worked briefly with children in state custody. After having been a Roman Catholic all of my life, I felt the need for a change. I began attending Saint David's in I joined in I have participated in the serving of breakfast, the Flower Guild, and the Grounds Committee. The all-embracing atmosphere of Saint David's warms my heart, and I would like to be of service. 4
ANNETTE PILCHER I have been a member of St. David s since 1972 and have lived in the Diocese of Tennessee for over 40 years. In the diocese I have served on Bishop and Council twice and have served on the Stewardship and the Accessibility Commissions. I have also been a delegate to the diocesan convention four times. At St. David s I have served on the Vestry twice, chaired the Adult Christian Education Committee, and served on the Stewardship Committee. I assisted in founding the Mary & Martha of Bethany Chapter of the Daughters of the King. I also aided in the establishment of the Columbarium and have served as Chairperson of the Columbarium Committee for the past three years. I am currently serving on the Green Committee to plan for the reduction of future utility bills at St. David s. STEPHANIE SPECTOR I joined St. David s in 2005, and I have enjoyed getting to know the traditions and parishioners. The growth of young families in our church is very exciting. I like the size of St. David s, and I especially like the convenience since I live just around the corner on Brownlee Drive! I was raised and confirmed in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Ruston, Louisiana, where my parents and grandparents are very active members. I am in my second year of leading the Bloomin Onions, which is a group of young singles and families. We gather every few months for a social or outreach event. Some of our activities include a spring picnic, assisting with Room in the Inn, and the Pancake Supper. I have served as a Godly Play teacher for two years, and I am a new member of the Flower Guild. My husband Jason and I are both from Louisiana and met at college at Ole Miss. We ve lived in Nashville for 8 ½ years, and we are the proud parents of a very spirited 2 ½ year-old boy, Adam. We take pride in being an inter-faith couple as Jason is Jewish, and we have made a joint decision to raise our children in the Episcopal Church. I work as a real estate paralegal 4 days/week at a downtown law firm. I enjoy home renovation/decorating projects, reading, and of course, shopping! 5
