NOVEMBER, 2010 ALL SAINTS A typical session of premarital counseling focuses on the family. It s during this time that I ask couples to remember who or what shaped them into becoming who they are. Almost always, they recall the saints of their families along with significant others. They rarely recall specific lessons; however, they always recall characteristics. Sometimes they share stories. Sometimes they share pictures. Always they share qualities that define what we often refer to as a saint. My favorite definition is found on Wikipedia: The use of the word saint in popular culture denotes a simple feeling of thanks and respect for someone s efforts. At our celebration of All Saints Sunday on November 7, we will give thanks to God for all the good people God has placed in our lives, especially those who have died. And our tradition also honors relatives and friends who have died within the past year. In addition to baptism and special music, a special flower memorial will be erected in the nave near the pulpit. Entwined within the arrangement will be a wide ribbon to which cards with names written on them will be attached. The names of those we want to remember will be provided by each of us. Baskets have been placed on the tables outside the entrances to the nave with cards to write the name(s) of those to be remembered. A small donation to help with the cost is requested; the amount is up to you. Our hope is that we will all find the visual uplifting of our loved ones to be joyful and inspirational. E.S.G. THE REV. DANIEL PAUL MATTHEWS TO PREACH Former St. David s rector Dan Matthews (and rector emeritus of Trinity Church, Wall Street, in New York) will be our guest preacher on Sunday, November 21. You won t want to miss this much sought-after preacher good friend and mentor! 1

On November 13, Half the Sky authored by Pulitzer Prize winning journalists Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn will be discussed. Amazing women in Asia and Africa are introduced who, with a little help, have overcome extreme adversity. The authors explain how empowering women results in all sorts of economic and social progress. Tom Brokaw says of the book, "Half the Sky is a passionate and persuasive plea to all of us to rise up and say, No more!' to the seventeenthcentury abuses to girls and women in the twenty-first century world." Call Julie Erwin or Judy Grace for more information.

MAGAZINES FOR ALIVE HOSPICE There is a collection basket across from the sacristy for Alive Hospice magazine donations. Duplicates are not a problem as the readers are free to take the magazines with them and there are three different Alive Hospice locations. Thank you, Annette Pilcher REFELECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP: WHAT ST. DAVID S MEANS TO ME by Rahn Huber When I first meet someone new in Nashville, I usually say, Oh, I haven t lived here that long. And truthfully, compared to many, I haven t. I moved here in July, 2004, and began attending St. David s in August. I love Nashville, yet much of my heart still belongs with cherished friends of nearly three decades in Atlanta. But I don t miss the traffic, crowds, and noise! From the beginning, Rick, Carol, and the parishioners have made me feel at home. I ll always remember that the first person who spoke to me was also new, Debbie McDougall, who holds a special place in my heart. Life happens when we are and aren t watching. So it came in January, 2008, when my active and younger than his 79 years father-in-law began to weaken and suffer pain. It was a sudden change that baffled the doctors. He walked vigorously every day, cooked all the meals, and did the grocery shopping for himself and my mother-in-law. As a retired ORNL engineering manager and former American Welding Society President and Board member, his initial approach to cooking was so scientific that we would laugh, but not when he knew it of course! He became an accomplished cook who moved beyond strictly following recipes and even made his own bread for years. I first met Dick in 1980 he was in many ways like a second father to me. He always had a grin, and if you ve ever known anyone that you said, Oh, so-and-so gives the best hugs, well you d say that about him. My sister is an RN of many years, so in April that year, she took a 7-hour trip to see Dick. She told me privately afterwards that she was 4 sure he had a tumor at the base of his spine. The doctors found the tumor the next week and began vigorous treatment. In June, my husband Greg and I were 3 days short of hectically preparing to leave for a tenday trip when I said, Let s go see your dad. If you know my husband, you know that he is not often enthusiastic, but his response let me know that was the right thing to do. When we went, Dick was mostly napping and told me with sadness I can t hug you because I can t stand up. I leaned over and hugged him but it just wasn t the same. This marked our last family meal with him being at the table. On August 22, 2008, Dick passed away surrounded by family from all over the country. He died one day short of the 39 th anniversary of my own father s death, and this was an overwhelming emotion. My mother-in-law, exhausted from care-giving said, Rahn, please take care of things. So there I was working with St. Stephen s Episcopal in Oak Ridge, and organizing meals for 40 family members all week. I was grateful to help. St. Stephen s women brought us dinner the night before the funeral. That was such a gift, but little did I know what St. David s had in store for us. We got home that Sunday and three St. David s angels (Dotty, Jennifer, and Julie) brought us enough meals for our first week back at home. We are still so grateful, as we were truly exhausted. This is what St. David s is to me a place filled with the Spirit of God, and people who deeply and genuinely care about you. There are so many gifted St. David s people that God has brought together. I know if you think about it, you can name several of them. It makes me cry when I think about what it means to be a part of this community. Little did I know that in choosing St. David s what it would come to mean to me. As our thoughts turn to stewardship and we make plans for our financial support of St. David s in 2011, I encourage you all to take some time to consider what St. David s means to you. November 14 is Pledge Sunday.

*** Please contact the church office before donating stock as we have changed banks in the last year. ROOM IN THE INN The St. David s community is starting our 25th season of participating in Room in the Inn, an ecumenical program bringing congregations around Nashville together for the common purpose of serving the homeless community. This season our church will host Room in the Inn guests on: November 13 th, December 11 th, January 8 th, February 12 th, and March 12 th at the St. Luke s Community House gymnasium, not far from St. David s. Volunteers should arrive at St. Luke s at 5:45 p.m. Sign-up sheets for every month are posted in the hallway heading to Sanders Hall. ALL WOMEN ARE DAUGHTERS: A WEEKEND FOR WOMEN YOUNG & OLD November 12-14, 2010 Deepening one s faith, strengthening bonds among women All Women Are Daughters invites women and girls (ages 12 or fifth grade and up) to celebrate the wisdom and spiritual connections made when women come together in the presence of the Holy Spirit. This year s keynote speaker is the Rev. Monna Mayhall. The Rev. Dolores Nicholson will be the preacher on Sunday. Location: DuBose Conference Center, Monteagle. For more information and to register, or call Financial assistance is available. Susan Cowperthwaite at cowpersusan@gmail.com can also tell you more. 5 MISSION & OUTREACH UPDATES by Judy Grace The following updates may remind you of some of our previous outreach endeavors, mustard seeds here and there. From Delicias del Norte, Iglesia San Lucas, Honduras: (This is an area that several St. David s parishioners have visited. In this area our scholarship program was initiated about eight years ago.) You can be very proud of the lives you touched in San Lucas. St. David s has made it possible for many to get an education which some are continuing with the church scholarships; five students are now working their way through the university on weekends. San Lucas has 18 in high school with two--vivian Vallecillo and Iris Lopez graduating (note: these are 2 of the girls St. David s sponsored). Seven will graduate from 6th grade this year, and several who lost their scholarships last year hope to regain them. We may have 28 in high school. It costs $150 per the year for uniforms, books, mandatory trips and school functions (they lose points if they don't attend or participate--i call it oppression). We hope to get some into a technical school in San Pedro Sula which will be more costly. The students are becoming focused on an education and I can't think of a better way out of their poverty. -- The Rev. Barbara Boghetich Rector, San Lucas From La Davis: (an area visited by the Rev. Francisco Peña after Hurricane Mitch in 1997) There are six children in this family. A relative who was able to come to the United States left her children with this family. The father abandoned them. Candida, the mother, was left with 11 children. She lives in a 2-room house with no electricity. With our help, the two oldest girls have finished 9 th grade, and we have been able to help this family with schooling and basic necessities. From Catherine Piwang (our friend in Uganda): Things have changed in Northern Uganda. People have moved back home and there are no more IDP (Internally Displaced

Persons ) camps (thank God for that!). We have started The Gulu Trauma Counseling and Healing Center in one of the worst hit places during the war. It is in the process of being built on the 30 acres that we purchased, thanks to the gift from St. David's Church. Next month we will be housing five women on the land full time with a pre-school for their children. I visited them last week and the women are beginning to rebuild their lives. One of the ways for healing for these women is a project we have started called Community Garden...where they grow food on the land...together. The soil is rich and the land is green and cool...it is such a healing thing to dig deep in the dirt that once soaked the blood of so many lives and yet here in this soil life begins to grow. (We still have a few items made by the Child Mothers and will place them in the bazaar.) Kiva.Org: St. David s has been making microloans ($25) to groups and individuals in twothirds-world countries. Various organizations and individuals throughout the world may contribute to finance one business. After a project is financed, the money is then loaned. Loans are repaid over a period of time. When St. David s receives repayments, we then make another investment. To see our loan recipients and learn more about this process, go to Go to My Portfolio and enter judithgrac@comcast.net. The password is mission. If you would like to make a donation (great Christmas gift!), earmark your donation Kiva. The following statistics show where these loans have been made.
