1 THE REV. MOLLY DALE SMITH INTERVIEWED FOR COOKBOOK MAY, 2014 The Rev. Molly Dale Smith was interviewed recently for a new cookbook that connects food and clergy. We thought you might like to see it! Meals are always best when shared and Sundays tend to put us in a different frame of mind than any other day of the week. It s a more reflective day and perfect for breaking bread together. That s part of the reason the Reverend Molly Dale Smith started the Sunday Supper Club at St. David s Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tennessee. As the Priest Associate, she realized the need for merging education and food, so in the fall of 2011, the club began. It is still going strong as a weekly organized pot-luck because her instincts were right on target. Although Molly was born in New York, she has deep Southern roots that drew her family back to Nashville when she was in the 8 th grade. She understands the almost visceral connection that Southerners have to hospitality and the lovely gift it is to others. The Sunday club is designed around a program topic for discussion, but centered around fellowship. It is beautifully fluid to meet the spiritual and financial needs of the attendees. If you want to cook, great! Bring a dish that fits into the menu. If you would rather not, that s not a problem because there are other ways to share of yourself. That might be helping to clean up, rearrange the chairs, or wash the dishes. No matter what you bring, the point is that you are always welcome at St. David s. Molly was still salivating over their most recent meal, which included a juicy meatloaf, creamy mashed potatoes, cooked just right green beans, tangy lemon bars, gooey brownies and, of course, wine. While each of the food items could not stand alone as a complete meal, together, they were perfection. And that s the way it is with the group. Once a week, by being together, they enhance each other. They are an ever expanding family of believers who have transformed pot-luck into a weekly celebration of God s abundance. 1

3 THE ONION RINGS by Norman Gillis Be sure to pick up a copy of the new Bellevue Messenger, a free newspaper published and edited twice monthly by Vince Troia. Nikki Troia serves as support staff, writer/editor/ad sales/general lackey. One of Nikki s articles in the inaugural issue is a portrait of our own Staci Spivak, artist and co-owner of River Art Studio in River Plantation Court. Many thanks to John Kitch for the donation of the beautiful chairs in the Henderson Room and file cabinets from his old office as he moves his practice to Cornelius & Collins, LLP. Thank you to the organizers and hosts at the Seder Meal on Palm Sunday, April 13! Lynda Christiansen wants to thank everyone for participating in the Sunday morning breakfasts preparation. You have been wonderful. All of us Breakfast Participants really appreciate you! Aaron Gaspard has been asked to serve as the bugler at the Nashville Steeplechase for the second year in a row. Way to go, Aaron! YOUTH GROUP NEWS May 18 - Service Day on the Trail: the youth will volunteer at Percy Warner Park working on the trails. After a few hours of serving, we will have a picnic; this will be a family event. The church will provide the main dish; we ask that the parents bring a side dish to share. We will have footballs, soccer balls, frisbees and plan to have a lot of fun in the sun. The youth are also planning a summer mission trip around Nashville; we are planning to serve in a number of different organizations who serve different communities around Nashville. The idea of this is to show the young people of our congregation the need within our own city and that hopefully this sparks an interest to get involved during the year with one of these organizations. The dates of this trip are June 12/13th til Sunday June 15th. (We may book the accommodation for the Thursday night so we don't have people arriving at the service location with their weekend bags.) 4 We look forward to seeing you at these events in the coming months. St. David's Youth Ministry Team The Bible Class invites you to join a visit to the Islamic Center of Nashville. On Saturday, May 10, the Monday Bible Class will visit the Islamic Center of Nashville, th Avenue South. We will hear a presentation: Islam Beliefs, Practices and Misunderstandings, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Please visit for more information about the Islamic Center. All members of the St. David s community are invited to join us. The talk will begin at 10:30 a.m. Those who want to carpool should be at St. David s at 10:00 a.m. Cars will leave promptly at 10:05 a.m. We have been asked to dress modestly - no shorts or short skirts, scarves are not necessary. There will be chairs for us to sit on. Following the visit to the Islamic Center we will have lunch at The Cookery, th Avenue South, Suite A ( The Cookery, in addition to serving coffee and luncheon/dinner foods to the public, has a greater purpose. The Cookery kitchen owners, Brett and Terry, instill culinary crafts to select homeless individuals in order to prepare them for employment in Nashville s food industry. Please sign up by May 7 either on the church bulletin board or by contacting the church office. It is not necessary to participate in both events; however, we need to know numbers for both places. Please indicate which events you want to participate in when you sign up. Contact Molly Dale Smith at mollydsmith@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

CHILDREN S WORSHIP AND GODLY PLAY by Jennifer Sanders Love One Another...that's what the children have been focusing on this year in Children's Worship. And I'll have to say our children really know how to love each other! It's been a wonderfully blessed year with our children. Each week I am greeted with their beautiful smiles; they are eager to lend a hand, and they enjoy hearing and learning God's stories. It has also been a wonderful year because of the help received each Sunday from our gracious volunteers. This program would not be possible without our parents and parishioners who willingly lend a hand each Sunday to be a Storyteller, a Doorkeeper or an Usher. Thanks to you all for your valuable time and loving ways! We will conclude this year on Mother's Day, May 11, with a year-end activity; rest this summer (if that is possible) and get back into the swing of things on Rally Day! If you would like to volunteer during Children's Worship and Godly Play please let me know. We would love to have you, and your support would be graciously appreciated!!! Thank you all again for a wonderful year! ROOM IN THE INN, To our many friends at St. David s, we wanted to be sure to thank each of you for this wonderful year supporting our Room in the Inn guests. We are honored to have been chosen to facilitate this great event over the six months of the program in which we touched the lives of 66 men. We have identified several more people who will help us in the next season, and we will get with you before our next series of Saturday nights. Thank all of you in advance of our very necessary efforts. Jim and Deborah Irwin
